CHAPEL HILL — Where's John Bunting when you need him?
Butch Davis has brought UNC back to a bowl and into the national rankings but the second-year coach is 0-2 against rival N.C. State after Saturday's 41-10 romp by the Wolfpack.
N.C. State forced six turnovers and scored two touchdowns in a 14-second span in the third quarter to break the game open and claim what former UNC coach Mack Brown called the "state championship" with a clean sweep of UNC, ECU, Duke and Wake Forest.
Bunting owned N.C. State, winning his last three games against the Wolfpack, but the series has changed with Tom O'Brien at N.C. State.
O'Brien's 6-1 against in-state opponents and is the first N.C. State coach to win his first two games against the Tar Heels (7-4).
"We're the best football program in the state," O'Brien said. "Without question. We are the state university and we expect to be here."
With three straight wins, State (5-6) is one win away from a bowl game after a 2-6 start.
The game turned at the end of the third quarter.
After Andre Brown's 2-yard touchdown at 1:28 in the third quarter, J.C. Neal stripped UNC's Robert Quinn on the ensuing kickoff and the Wolfpack got the ball on its own 21.
Russell Wilson's second touchdown pass, a 21-yarder to Owen Spencer — who had dropped two potential touchdowns — caught this one on a precise post route through the guts of UNC's defense.
UNC briefly pushed back at N.C. State with Ryan Houston fulfilling his role as the touchdown vulture, punching it in from 5-yard out for the Heels' first TD of the game and make it 17-10.
But six turnovers, three in each half, halted UNC's charge to the Coastal Division title. The loss eliminates the Heels from the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 6.
UNC turned the ball over three times in the first half, which State could only turn into three points.
Yates making his first start since Sept. 20 was rusty in the first
half, throwing a late pick to defensive end Willie Young on a screen pass. Yates went 6 of 13 for 71 yards in the first half.
A drop in the end zone by Spencer, on the first play after Young's interception, was State's best chance to score before the end of the half.
Normally reliable running back Shaun Draughn fumbled on each of UNC's first two possessions.
Josh Czajkowski's 39-yard field goal at 8:12 in the first quarter put the Wolfpack in front of the 25th-ranked Tar Heels.
Draughn fumbled at State's 47-yard line on the first possession but Czajkowski missed a 39-yard field goal.
Draughn fumbled again, at UNC's 23, but State's offense couldn't find the end zone. Its best chance came on first down but Wilson underthrew Jamelle Eugene at the goal line.
State led 10-0 after it manufactured a 97-yard touchdown drive, with 55 coming on a pass from Russell Wilson to Jarvis Williams.
Wilson's 17-yard pass to Bryan capped the drive for the game's first touchdown.
Casey Barth kicked a 37-yard field goal at 8:47 in the second quarter to get the Heels on the scoreboard.
Jamelle Eugene's 1-yard touchdown run extended State's halftime lead to to 17-3 at 9:53 in the third quarter.
T.J. Yates 27-yard pass to Greg Little moved UNC into Wolfpack territory and answered State's previous scoring drive.
That was the bright spot for Yates, who had missed five games with a broken bone in his right ankle. He was pulled in the fourth quarter for Cam Sexton, who had started the previous six game before Davis made the switch after last week's 17-15 loss to Maryland.
The ending was a stark contrast to State's last trip to Chapel Hill in 2006. After UNC's 23-9 win, in what turned out to be the last between Bunting and Chuck Amato, Bunting got a Gatorade bath and big kiss from Barrington Edwards.
Kenan Stadium emptied, for all but the pockets of red that filled the stadium with chants of "Wolf" and "Pack."

wow!!
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 17:50 — gvillegatrboy. I tied one on last night. that was my second mistake. my first mistake was not leaving sooner than I did yesterday at the game. what a disappointment. this is one of those games, when you were a kid, you simply didnt want to go to school the next day b/c it was just too embarassing. This was one of the worse losses UNC has ever taken in baskets or football.
NCSU was the better team yesterday and thats that. I honestly dont know if UNC can win next week at DUIke. The Maryland game took everything away from UNC.
way to support your team by
Mon, 11/24/2008 - 19:18 — mad_maxway to support your team by leaving the game early. oh, and i suppose you weren't one of the thousands booing tj yates as he bounced a pass to one of his receivers....unc fans are too classy for that. at least, thats what you all said earlier this year. PWNED
i too....
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 16:36 — izzykareempredicted the upset, but thought it would be close. In the back of mind i actually thought we'd kill UNCCH if we played like last year and didn't have turnovers, my gut was right.
I also said, don't start TJ. I know the guy is good but he's rusty and some of those throws at the feet showed.
NC State/UNC Game
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 08:40 — WampumI predicted an upset but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would be a blowout. If they play like that against Miami, that too will be a blowout. I think I'll come back to earth and just say NC State will beat Miami by 7 points.
and it could have been a lot worse
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 07:22 — teepackWe missed one field goal and dropped 3 potential TD passes. I don't even think 41-10 was an accurate indicator of the score. It should have been something like 59-10! But who's complaining? Besides UNC fans, of course!
11-1
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 00:35 — george32carlton tudor wrote about 11-1, the rest of us were hoping for 8-4 or 7-5 since the heels are still playing a lot of rreshmen/sophomores, still think next year will be good.
unc....
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 22:38 — ober_4football is good for a laugh. It was pure and simple -- A good old-fashioned butt-whooping!! Go PACK!!!!!!!!
NO TURNOVERS!!!!
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 22:06 — TarHeelFan05UNC is pretty good lemme tell ya.. we almost won that game today..

Sat, 11/22/2008 - 22:57 — mad_maxyeah, only 31 points away...almost had it
good game
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 23:41 — TarHeelFan05Carolina really came out good today.. no turnovers (way to go Draughn x2 , Yates , Sexton x 2, Quinn) did good on converting 3rd downs (3-11) Having a strong defense and only giving up only 466 yards. Having a good Offense witha whopping 203 yards. Someone please tell me how we didnt win agian?
reality check for the
Mon, 11/24/2008 - 19:14 — mad_maxreality check for the tarholes. once again the media's favoritism is exposed for the fabrication that it is. unc was a lock to at least finish 2nd in the coastal according to the media, while nc state was supposed to go 1-11. must suck for you guys
very funny
Sun, 11/23/2008 - 16:34 — izzykareemactually i was snickering reading this...good show. I may have to employ this during Bbal season, i hope not, but...
State Rolls!
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 19:15 — RegIsBestI was very nervous about this game, but had much hope that State could win. I didn't think with a 41-10, victory. The game was exciting from the beginning to the end. I couldn't/wouldn't have missed seeing this win for my life's sake. It was worth every minute. Go Wolfpack!
Hurricanes...Watch out!
That was sweet!
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 19:12 — JPDOhioWhat a great performance by the Pack. UNC certainly didn't help themselves with the turnovers, but they were still in it at halftime and the Pack had some problems too (too many dropped passes).
Hopefully, this will shut the TOB haters up for good. This team has improved each game as they have gained experience and gotten healthy. Coach O'Brien's decision to go with Russell Wilson from the start of the season was inspired. Love to see a win against the U next week and a shot at a bowl game (even if it is Boise and San Fran).
Not surprised that UNC1998 was gracious in defeat. Class act. Can't wait to here Gatr take on the game.
I'd like to congratulate all NCSU fans, players, and coaches.
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 18:19 — UNC1998That was a great effort on your part. NCSU's coach O'Brien really had the players motivated. UNC did not play well at all. I'm quite sure NCSU had something to do about that. I left the game tired and cold. I had to go get something to eat and warm up. There are no excuses. To cheifjaha, you are right. I was there to see it. Yates was not effective. Wilson did a great job for NCSU. I wish your team the best for the rest of the year. I'm disappointed in how UNC performed. Exp. since GT came through, and Clemson has come through today. UNC again had it before them, and couldn't get it done. Once again, congratulations.
BTW, I used have the screen name UNCAlumnus, but have changed it to the year of my graduation. I grew tired of the old name.
ACC Coastal
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 16:54 — wrekfanThank you State! now the ACC Coastal is between Miami, Georgia Tech and Virginia Tech. If the season continues like it has been, Virginia will beat VT next week and GT wins in a tiebreaker
No way!
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 15:49 — tjfooseThere must be a mistake... I thought the 'Heels where going 11-1 this year and Butch was gonna walk on water before Christmas. What happened?
...
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 23:48 — TarHeelFan05I'll tell you what happend.. UNC won 7-8 instead of 11 & UNC lost 4-5 instead of 1...
that's basically what it comes down to..
Noone can walk on water but jesus.. you know that..
that's what happens when you
Mon, 11/24/2008 - 19:11 — mad_maxthat's what happens when you always get overrated. UNC racked up wins early in the season against less than mediocre programs, and it came back to bite em in the butt when they played a team in NC State that has dealt with adversity all year. unc had everything spoon-fed to them by the media and its so nice to see them get this reality check. utter domination by nc state. and for all you idiots out there that wanna say unc is still the better team, what do you have to back up that argument with??? stop being sore losers like mr. Draughn. sure unc's overall record is slightly better, but that's because they played a weaker schedule. both teams are 3-4 in conference, and state just put a 31 point whoopin on unc in chapel hill on senior day! again, how is unc still the better team? pwned
HEY UNCALUMNUS
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 15:41 — chiefjaha41-10 The Pack absolutely, positively DOMINATED the heels…Go PACK!!
UNC football
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 15:39 — holstiLast year UNC was 3-8 going into the Duke game and it gave coach Butch Davis a $290,000 raise. This year he is 7-4 going into the Duke game and thus it appears that he should get at least a $600,000 raise. Fair is fair.
Can you say Butt Kicking!
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 14:51 — lil576How about the PACK! I guess UNC better pull out the O'l Wait For Basketball Season fall back.
basketball
Sat, 11/22/2008 - 23:44 — TarHeelFan05I have no problem doing that! Although i may be down over this horrible loss. Basketball season does make me smile! =]
We actually win in basketball! =]
