Lisa Leslie has confirmed that her son, Word of God Christian Academy basketball player C.J. Leslie, has withdrawn the verbal commitment he made to N.C. State as a high school freshman, while making clear that she still likes NCSU and her son is still considering playing for Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe.
"He just wanted to expand his visits to other schools," said Lisa Leslie, who added that she and her son had decided Saturday night to open the search again.
Mitch Summerfield, Word of God's chief operating officer and son of founder Dr. Frank Summerfield, confirmed that Memphis is among the other schools that the 6-foot-9 junior would like to visit but would not specify where else he might look. Memphis and N.C. State are also on the list of Leslie's Word of God teammate, John Wall, a senior point guard who intends to turn pro after his freshman year in college.
Leslie, ranked as the No. 4 power forward nationally by the recruiting web site scout.com, "really hasn't thought that whole process through yet," Summerfield said.
"I'm in N.C. State's corner, of course," he added. "I'm pushing [N.C. State]."
Summerfield said that the chances are "still very strong" that Leslie will wind up at State. "He actually talked to Sidney Lowe directly to let him know they are still on his list," Summerfield said. "He just wants to make sure he’s not hurting his chances of being ranked and all of the things that go along with his summer this year."
T.J. Jones, coach of the Lake Norman Wizards, a 16-and-under traveling team based in the Charlotte area, said Leslie would play for his team for the first time this summer.
Summerfield said Leslie basically felt he had committed too early — before he had progressed athletically and academically in the past two years. Summerfield would not specify the student's grade-point average but said it was above the minimum 2.4 that Word of God requires for athletes to be eligible to compete.

Bozeman
Thu, 03/19/2009 - 08:07 — the_wb91I think State should give Lowe a little more time but if State let him go I think State should pick up Todd Bozeman. After the Cal incident he had been out of coaching for a while but came to Morgan State. A school that had know basketball history at all and got them into the NCAA tourney. Although he was young at Cal and made a very dumb decision, I believe he has learned from that mistake. Plus, what he did never involved any outside dollars or alumni influence. The money came directly out of his pocket. It has been years ago and he has proven that he has learned from his action and has become a role model. Those are my reasons if anyone doubts his character. Now here are reasons on the basketball court that State should pick him.
He is a recruiting mad man... other then the Jelani Gardner incident that he got in trouble for... he gets all types of recruits. He gets the street savy athletic recruits, the fundamentally sound high b-ball IQ recruits, and he gets players that have both. The last reason is he can Coach his butt off and has done it against the best like coach K. Coach Williams and Coach K would have a very hard time recruiting and coaching against this guy.
Sidney Lowe
Mon, 03/16/2009 - 16:00 — nchowlNC State cannot continue to cry about changing coaches every few years and expect to improve the situation. Although Sidney does not have a lot of college coaching experience, I am sure he has been around the sport long enough to get this program going in a positive direction. Although Herb did get us to the tournament, he did not have what it takes to get us over the hump. We would have continued to make tournament only to lose in first or second round just like Arizona St will do this year. Sidney inherited a team that was good in Herb's eyes but not deep enough to maintain with a new system that Sidney is trying to develop. In Herb's 10 years, he never used his full 13 scholorships. Every year when we would have an injury, we would hear Herb say "We hardly have enough players to conduct practice". When I questioned Herb about this he responded that, "We do not use up all of our scholarships just to use them". my question is , Is there not anyone in the world that is good enough to earn a scholarship to NC State so that we can have a full squad? That was one problem with Herb. The other problem was that when Herb left we had no guards on the team. He had a commitment from Chris Wright and along with the other recruits Herb had coming it may have been OK in his system. However when Sidney arrived we had no depth at quard play and that is what is wrong with us right now. guard is the most critical position on the court and our obvious shortage and inexperience here right now is killing us. Look at all the schools with so-so personnel but great guard play and you will see how important this factor is. When Sidney did have Atsur, we got to the finals of the ACC Tourney. Give Sidney time to get his recruits in here and have quality depth, along with his system and you will see positive results. It does not help when you fair weather fans start screaming for a change after only three years coaching and two years recruiting. We have the coaching staff in place, who all bleed red and white as much or even more than ourselves. Lets give them time to bring their type players in, who fit into their system, not Herb's system, and then judge the results.
Agree
Tue, 03/17/2009 - 12:53 — SurferMakes perfect sense. But it seems he needs more than just guard play. He needs a body of talent that will stay 3 or 4 years in order to be competitive. When other high end recruits see that (some success or excitement), they will want to come too. Recruiting seems to be where it should start and then measure on coaching capability.
Well put.
Mon, 03/16/2009 - 16:12 — JPDOhioOne example of your point on the importance of guard play- Maryland rode Vasquez right into the NCAA tourney. They win when he plays well, lose when he falters.
I'm betting both John Wall & CJ Leslie end up at Memphis
Mon, 03/16/2009 - 10:00 — DeaconPeachJust how open is the checkbook of the Memphis boosters anyway? And how long till the NCAA wakes up and smells the Calipari coffee?
Thank God
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 23:45 — eld240I just found out that the N.I.T. does not want NC State either. Davidson was chosen. Hey, Sidney I think it might be best that you keep bags packed from the trip to Georgia and take the Red eye back to the NBA, if they want you back. Thanks N.I.T. for not continuing the Misery. If he can't plead his case to make it to the N.I.T, how can he get any descent recruits...... looking gloom.... Man, I would love to see Bobby Knight as the Head Coach. He has mentioned that he was not retiring but just needed a break. At Indiana, he had made some remarks about how annoying it was to hear about Dean Smith and that Baby Blue all the time. I was just wondering how competive the game would be between State and Carolina, with him storming the sideline. We could really support the Armed forces with GENERAL Bob Knight and Major Tom O' Brien at State. Tom O'Brien was a Major in the Marines and you know Bobby Knight is called the General. His teams are discipled and will give 100 percent. I'mage him and Mike going at it in Cameron.. Yes. I would take him in an instant.
Give me a break
Tue, 03/17/2009 - 14:35 — the_wb91Bobby Knight talks junk about everybody and he has been doing nothing but giving UNC praise this year. BTW, the rumors have it that he is feeling the Georgia position.
you see now dont you?!
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 21:04 — TONY1955all you all wanted herb gone! now he's gone so how many times you been in ncaa tourney since he been gone?! you had a very good coach and ran him off! as the old saying goes what comes around goes around?
Lowe vs. Sendek
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 20:45 — gjaluvkayou can't compare their first 3 years - Sendek had to clean up the Les Robinson mess. Lowe inherited a program in good shape and couldn't keep the top recruits Sendek had gotten to sign on.
And in case you think it was all an accident, check out what he's done at Arizona State.
It's a joke - there's no way to spin it. I'd love to see the wolfpack succeed, but I think it won't happen until they bring somebody like they did in Football who will change the culture and zig when the others zag - because you won't beat UNC and Duke at their own recruiting game. Everybody wanted to bash Sendek for what he didn't accomplish, but he figured out quickly that he had to find a way to compete without getting the players Duke and UNC got - he adopted a style and approach that allowed him to do that.
How many years did Matt
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 20:12 — realwufHow many years did Matt Doherty last as coach at UNC.....3 years. It is obvious that Sidney Lowe's NBA style coaching does not work at the college level. There have also been college coaches (John Calipari and Rick Pitino) who have proven that the college style coaching does not work in the NBA. Sid has tried hard to make it work, but it isn't working and the program needs a change. The signs are: we are losing year after year, we can't get recruits, and there seems to be a lack of team cohesiveness (McCauley was in trouble with Sid early in the season, Degand did something that got him benched, Mays went into excile for some reason. The program needs a change at the leadership ship level.....the coach.
Got it backwards?
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 20:03 — rataplan2Did it occur to anyone Wall may be leaving because he has info Sidney won't be the coach? And he wants to play for Sidney. Not saying that's written in stone, but what an opportunity for Wall to shine in a program that will be without two or three seniors, plus perhaps Costner. But Costner must know he won't be playing bassetball next year anywhere if he leaves NCSU. The other scenario is NCSU doesn't need a one-and-done player. D1 basketball is a TEAM sport and all Wall would do if the rumor is true he's a one-and-doner, is try to pad his stax -- which won't help the Wufies win any games and will further grease the skids for Sidney, as if they weren't already greased enough. Sidney -- run far, far away from this kid.
Wall off to Europe
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 19:49 — dalefullerAAU insiders let me know that Wall probably will not even take the SAT. He is off to Europe with a one year contract and close to a $1M deal with Nike.
Ink may be dry as a matter of fact.
All signs point that he will be the #1-5 draft choice in '10.
He would defenitely be the 1 this year if T Griffin did not come out and Wall could be drafted.
....
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 19:18 — SketchPoJavi was not a transfer from Tennessee. That was Marques Johnson. Get your facts straight. We've already lost Favors, Cousins, possibly Leslie, and probably Wall. If he can't recruit players that he wants, that means he'll have to settle. That won't bode well for his future with the program. Give him a chance, but make sure he knows he has to get it done. Everybody also talks about coaching, but what about Fowler? He hasn't proved that he knows what he's doing either! If Lowe goes, so should Fowler.

Commitment (according to
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 18:29 — ciscopackCommitment (according to Merriam Webster) - an agreement or pledge to do something in the future; the state or an instance of being obligated or emotionally impelled. Do a book report on the word and let me know what you find out.
No one wants a young man to make a big mistake early in life; he obviously feels he may have, thus he should do something about it!
That said, cisco believes enough to fully stand behind Coach Lowe and Coach Towe and give them an opportunity to right the ship. If I'm the coach, this is one place he can't come to. Commitment; see the above meaning. Changing your mind is perfectly fine and it's something you should do if you're not sure but in my book it's PERMANENT! Hasta la vista, baby! Greener pastures ain't in Raleigh; not for CJ Leslie.
I suggest that Coach Lowe take the Tom O'Brien approach in finding good student athletes that want a college degree, that just happen to be good football/basketball players. Brains are the reason UNJ - Durham plays good defense and hustles. Hustle is MANDATORY! The summer leagues of basketball are a flying circus and I fully realize 99.99% of the good players are playing. I'm working creditable high schools and smart young men that just happen to play basketball well. Or even foreigners if need be....Barnum and Bailey and the Memphis Tigers can run the circus.
His Commitment Too Early!
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 17:51 — jeromfitzThis guy looks pretty tall in the photo and maybe he decision to verbal commit was just too early. Just wait until you senior year or junior year with the earliest notification of your decision. He do have a right to reconsider. You got to see what the recruiting process and visits are about first.
you people are insane.
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 17:10 — mad_maxyou people are insane. losing a recruit here and there does not mean sidney lowe needs to go. give the man a chance to get his players running his system. look at some of the guys lowe has already brought in, like tracy smith and javi gonzalez. lowe has another year or two before it may be time to say goodbye. improvement was definitely there this year; state just needs to keep building. give it time folks, give it time.
everybody likes to compare lowe to herb sendek, saying that the decision to switch to lowe was a huge mistake. but wait a minute, sidney lowe has the same number of acc wins in his first three seasons as sendek did. and sendek didn't get to the ncaa tourney until his 6th season. give lowe a fair chance, that's all i'm saying.
Good call max
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 19:59 — JPDOhioThe kid isn't lost yet. To me, it is crazy to commit before your senior year and for someone to reconsider two years later is not surprising. Sid just needs to keep working on him. And we need to give Sid the benefit of the doubt for two more years.
We have seen what he can do
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 17:41 — eld240We have seen what he can do in 3yrs. As well as losing big leads in several games this years. He will lose 3 players to graduation and I say Costner's gone. Javi was a transfer from Tennessee during Herb's last season. He {SID}can't beat UNC, Duke, Maryland.....etc. Go get Bobby Knight.
Way to Sidney Lowe, You have
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 16:58 — eld240Way to Sidney Lowe, You have lost one recruit {Favors} and now possibly two with Leslie. I just hope Lee Fowler is staying atop of this and maybe smells the coffee. You can also forget about John Wall. Do all of the Wolfpack nation a favor and hit the road.... ASAP.
just what ncsu fans need to hear!
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 16:33 — gvillegatrevery once in awhile I feel sorry for you guys. I really do. the hill is just too steep to climb.
but you know the crook, Calipari, has his paws all in this ... Wall being the go between man.
just mre evidence
Sun, 03/15/2009 - 16:24 — saltydawg1that sid has got to go.....i'm giving 5-1 odds that he won't get Wall either!!!
