Pack likely headed for tourney date with Terps

Bookmark and Share

Miami's annual beating of Maryland and N.C. State's loss to Virginia probably relegated N.C. State to the 7-10 game on Thursday at the ACC tournament.

State (5-10) closes with Florida State (10-5) at home on Sunday. Miami (6-9) goes to Georgia Tech (3-11) on Sunday. The tiebreakers are complicated, as always, but there's no realistic path to the 8-9 game, which starts at noon, for the Wolfpack.

The bad news for State is Maryland (7-8) is the No. 7 seed with a home win over Virginia on Saturday. State coach Sidney Lowe is 0-8 against Maryland.

The 7-10 game starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Tournament Seeds

I'm sad to see so much negativity.  Never give up, don't ever give up.  Sidney has proven himself over the years as a good tournament coach.  The Wolfpack is uniquely positioned to make a deep run and win the ACC.  It could happen.  We have the deepest team in the conference.  I would like to see us press more, force more tempo.  I hope Javy is well.  He played one of the gutsiest games in recent memory playing very well on an ankle that would have most folks crying to advil.

I see improvement in many areas of the game. Look at the personal improvement of each player on the team and tell me how that happens without good coaching.  When he was a freshman, Javy wa tentative and prone to turnovers.  Who know what Tracy Smith would be when he was a freshman?  Look at how much Richard Howell has improved.

And I don't understand all this nostalgia for Herb.  We routinely got trounced by Dook and the Tar Chumps when he was coach, by about the same margins.  I looked it up.  The records are on Gopack.com.    He didn't have NCAA teams for his first 4 years either, and had to get his recruiting built up.  His style of offense was a thing of beauty, when it worked. However, it only worked about 2-3 times per year.  We went amazingly far with Julius, and he had a good supporting class.  We play much better defense now, in most cases.  Still not getting out on the three point shooters, but lots of teams get open threes. (see Dook).

But the talent has definitely upgraded overall.  We just need more time to jell.

I would definitely vote for one more year, but with a clear understanding (in private, not the N&O) that next year we have to be in the top three of the conference or it's time to move on.

Agree to a point

Agree with the following:

  • Your statement, "The Wolfpack is uniquely positioned to make a deep run and win the ACC."  The position that State is in, is like few others in the ACC.
  • Your spelling of Dook.

Otherwise, I don't necessarily agree with your one more year stipulation, in that no way does State finish in the top three in the conference next year. If Sid comes back, he needs 2 or 3 years, at least.

Lowe Down Shame

Sure miss you Herb Sendek.  Lowe, you must Go!

Lowe Down Shame

Sure miss you Herb Sendek.  Lowe, you must Go!

shame on you

Whether Sid goes or stays will be a business decision made by Yow and the University. That decision will be controversial, no matter which way it turns out.

That said, using "shame" in the same sentence as Lowe is absurd. Say what you want about his coaching ability, he has represented NC State with integrity and class. If he does go, I will miss him for that reason and hope whoever replaces him follows his lead in that respect, but with better results on the court.

does it matter?

Does it matter?? 8-9-10 seed etc, the pack by losing to putrid virgina assured that they will not win again this season and finish 15-16 and 5-11in the acc and a hopefull coaching change despite the article about a postive split for coach lowe??? five years of 9-12 place finishes, two nit bids and no ncaa bids, for five years and there are thoughts for a sixth season? Imagine how empty the area will be next year it he comes back?

although Virginia might be, as you say, putrid . . .

UVA has a 6-9 ACC record while the presumably non-putrid wolfpack has a 5-10 ACC record . . .

No, personally it really doesn't

matter to me.  I'm sorry to say that I no longer care.  I agree, playing Maryland will almost certainly gurantee State a loss, rendering this miserable season mercifully over.  Sorry about the gloom & doom fellow State fans, but this is just the way the consequences of this season have affected my thinking.  I have given up, just as this team has.
