Pack, Heels eye football dates in Atlanta

Bookmark and Share

N.C. State is set to open the 2012 football season against Tennessee in Atlanta. UNC is trying to work out a deal to open the 2010 season in the Georgia Dome against an SEC team.

It's all apart of the Chick-fil-A College Kickoff, which was started by the Atlanta Sports Council and ESPN in 2008.

"I like it," Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien said. "You've got to play one major game that gets you on television. It's great exposure for our program."

State also opens the '09 season on national TV but it's a home Thursday date with South Carolina.

UNC opened with a lower-level Division I team in Butch Davis' first two seasons and will again in '09, with The Citadel, a Championship Subdivision program. The '10 opener in Atlanta would be against LSU, Georgia or Ole Miss.

"We're in the preliminary stages," said UNC assistant AD Larry Gallo, who works with Davis on the Tar Heels' football scheduling. "There's a lot still to work out."

UNC has six home games and six road games in '10. The Heels can't afford to lose a home game, Gallo said. They are working with South Carolina and Rutgers — who are scheduled to host UNC in '10 — about the possibility of moving their game to accommodate the Atlanta opener.

"We want this to be a win-win," Gallo said. "We want the teams we are dealing with to be treated fairly and happy with the solution."

Virginia Tech takes on Alabama in this season's college kickoff in Atlanta on Sept. 5. The Crimson Tide beat Clemson in last year's inaugural game at the Georgia Dome.

State and UNC have experience in playing traditional college openers. The Wolfpack beat Iowa in the 1992 Kickoff Classic in New Jersey and UNC beat USC in the 1993 Pigskin Classic in Anaheim, Calif.

Interesting, definitely a collector's item for some. I suppose one was sent to Mack Brown, in that he started the whole thing. I wonder is any of the 5 teams have even a chance to claim the "title" this year?

Like trying to find a SEC team we won't completely be throttled by...

maybe this one for the 2011 opener:
Carolina Football players vs. She-beasts and Creepy dude in hotel room

Schedules

You mean avoiding a scenario like NC State being throttled 34-0 in the 2008 season opener at South Carolina (SEC team) last year?   Better hope those chickens are through kickin' since State opens against the Gamecocks in Raleigh over Labor Day weekend.

Or, you may be referring to Va Tech being throttled by LSU (41-7 as I recall) early in the 2007 campaign.

Of course, State throttled UNC in Chapel Hill last year.  Nonetheless, the Heels have won about 65% of the games played between these rival schools.

Schedules

This news about special season openers in Atlanta is really exciting.

With no disrespect intended toward other programs, UNC has no business playing The Citadel in its home opener this fall nor do I think NC State should be playing Gardner-Webb in Raleigh.

On the positive side, UNC is slated to play Tennessee in 2011 in Chapel Hill and at Knoxville in 2012.  I remember when NC State played a longstanding home-and-away series with Penn State.  Contests like that create huge interest.

Yeah I'm going to have to

Yeah I'm going to have to side with you on that one!

Tennessee has backed out of

Tennessee has backed out of football games with State before. 2012 is four years away.

Perhaps being a part of the Chick Fil A College Kickoff will help UT keep their word this time around, but I wouldn't start printing the UT Vs. State t-shirts just yet.

I am just glad basketball is

I am just glad basketball is over, and we have some football to talk about...as i remember clemson got man handled by bama last season, here is hoping that V tech can booster the acc name brand...and keep us off the sports center list of leagues not deserving a BCS auto (us and Big East)...and so help me god for the first time in years i will be rooting for the tar holes when there kickoff game comes.....and for all you who say the pack will be good if RW stays healthy...do not forget about top 5 recruit Mike Glennon... could be if wilson gets hurt we have a better passer coming in (not as good as dual threat but maybe better passer) I say pack is good if baker and eugene stay healthy and the line, and everyone else on defense...or a combo of all....they say our conditioning program prevents injuries lets hope that is true because the starting 22 can play with anyone...it is the depth that will determine bowls.

Don't worry unc fans...

There is no way Butch would ever sign up to play Georgia or LSU -- it would be too much of a beatdown for unc-ch to stomach on national tv. If unc-ch plays anyone, it will be Ole Miss, although Ole Miss looked very good last season.

exactly like ...

what ACTUALLY happened to ncsu last year against a mid level team on national tv!!??

open mouth, insert foot!

Oh I remember

they beat ECU :)

indeed

but not on national tv!

ESPN

isn't national tv anymore? ::rolls eyes:: so maybe that was regional espn, it sure made national highlights

stand corrected

I was there, so I didnt need to watch it on tv.  no matter though.

Sweet little birds-egg blue cupcakes

Hoping my Georgia Dawgs get the smurfs for the 2010 opener.

under achievers

you guys consistently under achieve in the SEC.  you'll under achieve, again, if you get the Heels next season!

b/tn the hedges!?  UNC plays "b/tn the hedges" too!

LOL

UNC talking junk about Georgia!!?? That's HILARIOUS!!

besides, Carolina's players frolic "b/tn the cheeks"

not talking junk

I didn't say UNC would whoop them.  didnt say they would beat them.  just said to expect a helluva a game.

Kind little blue (orange?) friend

The underperforming dawgs will have to take out their frustration of only 2 SEC championships and 3 Sugar Bowl berths since 2002 on the sweet blue dandies.  As far as the Gators this fall?  That's not exactly in the bag for us :)

not a gayturd fan

but your honesty is pricelss!

be careful how you view the Heels.  like you so eloquently talk about the Dawgs since 02, you treat UNC in the opposite manor.  2010, if given the chance, will be another UNC team in its entirty (msp?).  except a helluva football game.

ECU will take care of the

ECU will take care of the Tar-Holes this year, better stop looking all the way to 2010

Comparison

Both State and UNC have two cupcake games, it is just that UNC has one for their first game. On other note of interest, I saw an actual shirt, proclaiming NCSU as the 2008 State Football Champions, wow. It did have the dates and scores for the four games on the back, for those who would have no idea what a State Football championship means (not High School). Interesting, definitely a collector's item for some. I suppose one was sent to Mack Brown, in that he started the whole thing. I wonder is any of the 5 teams have even a chance to claim the "title" this year? Perhaps in the ACC championship game or a bowl game. Anyway, I guess State now officially can have their "walk of champions" before home games. This year has all the hype and they shouldn't lose if RW stays healthy.

SOP

These days, everybody has at least one cupcake game. Scheduling games with BCS teams is hard enough, given that everyone wants and needs home games. I give credit to both Butch and Tom for at least trying to upgrade their schedules.

About the 2008 State Champion shirt, I am a Pack fan and that embarrasses me. It was a nice passing concept at the time, but to memorialize it is somewhat pathetic. The way the program is improving under TOB, I hope State fans don't have to resort to this kind of thing in the future.

keep the shirt

that was as much fun as I've had watching State football since Rivers left! C'mon man, making a shirt isn't "memorializing" it. But if you want to build a program, beating the in-state schools on the field is first. Then beat them in recruiting, etc, etc.

What Clooney?

Did you read the article at all?? They are in the preliminary stages of scheduling a game against LSU, Georgia or Ole Miss for the 2010 SEASON OPENER in Atlanta. What part of that don't you understand??? For all the new people, if you want your daily laugh, just read some of the comments posted on here!!!

exciting times ...

for both programs if they can both get these openers in the near future!

Carolina is playing the

Carolina is playing the Citadel....way to go Butch! That's the kind of team that really makes YOUR team a better one. Why not get some "footballs" and play a "real" SEC team to make YOUR team a tougher one.  After playing the "tough guys" you might have an 11 or 12 win season and get noticed.
