BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — What a difference a quarterback makes.
After cruising to an 11-point, halftime lead Monday at the Papajohns.com Bowl, N.C. State crumbled in the second half without starting quarterback Russell Wilson, losing 29-23 at Legion Field.
Rutgers outscored the Wolfpack 22-6 in the second half, taking the lead for good on a 43-yard touchdown pass from Mike Teel to Kenny Britt with 8:30 remaining.
Wilson led N.C. State to a 17-6 halftime lead with 186 passing yards and 46 rushing yards, but suffered a sprained knee late in the second quarter. N.C. State announced at halftime that Wilson would not return.
Backup Harrison Beck managed just 5 net yards on eight plays in the third quarter, and Rutgers took a 19-17 lead on a 28-yard San San Te field goal early in the fourth quarter.
Daniel Evans replaced Beck and drove N.C. State 64 yards, throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass with 9:21 remaining as the Wolfpack led 23-19 after a failed two-point conversion.
But Teel struck back quickly for Rutgers, and Evans was intercepted by Devin McCourty on N.C. State’s next drive.
N.C. State finished 6-7 as coach Tom O’Brien’s personal bowl winning streak, which was established entirely at Boston College, was snapped. Rutgers is 8-5.
----------
Rutgers struck back quickly after third-team quarterback Daniel Evans moved N.C. State back into the lead at the Papajohns.com Bowl with a desperately needed touchdown drive.
Mike Teel's 43-yard touchdown pass to Kenny Britt with 8:30 remaining in the fourth quarter gave Rutgers a 26-23 lead.
Evans had passed 16 yards to Anthony Hill for the go-ahead score and a 23-19 lead over Rutgers with 9:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The pass for the two-point conversion failed.
Evans also competed a 21-yard pass to Hill on third-and-7, and a 20-yard pass to Jarvis Williams.
----------
Rutgers has scored 13 straight points to start the second half and grab a 19-17 over N.C. State in the Papajohns.com Bowl.
A 28-yard San San Te field goal with 13:31 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Scarlet Knights their first lead since the opening quarter.
N.C. State had taken possession on the Rutgers 21 after a Clem Johnson interception, but backup quarterback Harrison Beck gave the ball back when he was intercepted by Ryan D’Imperio at the goal line.
Quarterback Mike Teel then drove Rutgers 70 yards for the go-ahead field goal.
With starting quarterback Russell Wilson injured, third-team quarterback Daniel Evans has relieved Beck.
-----------
N.C. State’s 11-point halftime lead has all but evaporated in the third quarter of the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Rutgers trails just 17-16 after a blocked punt by Kevin Malast set up an 11-yard scoring pass from Mike Teel to Tiquan Underwood with 6:50 remaining in the third quarter.
The Wolfpack now must try to generate offense with backup quarterback Harrison Beck in the game. Russell Wilson is out with a sprained knee after leading N.C. State to a 17-6 halftime lead.
------------
Rutgers kicker San San Te narrowed N.C. State’s lead with a 31-yard field goal to complete the opening drive of the third quarter Monday at the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Te, who is from Hickory, cut the deficit to 17-9 after a holding penalty on offensive guard Caleb Ruch damaged Rutgers’ chances of scoring a touchdown.
The Scarlet Knights faced first-and-20 from the N.C. State 21 after the penalty.
-----------
N.C. State quarterback Russell Wilson is out for the rest of the Papajohns.com Bowl with a knee sprain.
Wilson was injured on a touchdown drive that put the Wolfpack ahead 17-6 late in the second quarter against Rutgers. At halftime, Wilson had 186 passing yards and one touchdown and 46 rushing yards on eight carries.
Harrison Beck will replace Wilson.
----------
N.C. State survived two dropped passes by Owen Spencer on the same drive to extend its lead over Rutgers to 17-6 on Monday at the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Andre Brown’s 4-yard scoring run capped off an outstanding drive by Russell Wilson and Jarvis Williams. A stretching, 13-yard gain by wide receiver Williams converted a third-and-12.
Williams also caught a 20-yard pass that had Rutgers coach Greg Schiano running onto the field to demand an offensive pass interference penalty that wasn’t called.
Wilson also scrambled 7 yards to convert a third-and-6 and ran 17 yards to set up first-and-goal at the 4. Brown scored with 38 seconds remaining in the half as the Wolfpack reached halftime with a 17-6 lead after scoring 17 straight points.
----------
Two blocked kicks for N.C. State were the difference late in the first half in the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Willie Young blocked an extra point after Rutgers’ opening touchdown, and Antoine Holmes blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt by San San Te that looked like it was doomed from the start.
Those four points were the difference as the Wolfpack led 10-6.
----------
Couple injury updates for N.C. State.
Starting middle linebacker Ray Michel has been taken to the locker room for X-rays on an injured ankle and has been replaced by freshman Sterling Lucas.
Defensive end Markus Kuhn missed a start because of a shoulder injury but has played in a reserve role. Audi Augustin started in Kuhn’s place.
The Wolfpack still leads 10-6 with 8:12 remaining in the second quarter.
-----------
A 33-yard Josh Czajkowski field goal with one minute remaining in the first quarter extended N.C. State’s lead to 10-6 in the Papajohns.com Bowl on Monday. The quarter ended with the Wolfpack ahead by that margin.
On the drive, quarterback Russell Wilson hit a tightly covered Jarvis Williams down the sideline to his right for a 37-yard gain to convert a third-and-12, then passed 23 yards to Darrell Davis to move N.C. State into scoring position.
-------------
Owen Spencer — the wide receiver who’s been notorious for dropping deep passes late in the season — held on midway through the first quarter Monday afternoon for a 44-yard touchdown catch for N.C. State.
Russell Wilson rolled right, then hit Spencer on a post route in the middle of the field for the Wolfpack’s first postseason score under coach Tom O’Brien.
The catch capped an eight-play, 81 yard drive, and Josh Czajkowski’s extra point gave the Wolfpack a 7-6 lead with 7:54 remaining in the first quarter.
-------------
An early turnover and some Rutgers trickery put N.C. State in an early hole Monday afternoon at the Papajohns.com Bowl.
Rutgers sophomore Rob Cervini ran 6 yards for a score on a fake field goal attempt with 11:47 remaining in the first quarter. N.C. State blocked the extra point attempt, so the Scarlet Knights led 6-0.
The first play from scrimmage turned out to be a disaster for the Wolfpack when running back Jamelle Eugene’s fumble was recovered by Rutgers quarterback Jason McCourty, giving the Scarlet Knights possession at midfield.
Mike Teel completed passes of 22 yards to Tiquan Underwood and 20 yards to Shamar Graves to give Rutgers first-and-goal from the 7. But Teel threw incomplete on third-and-goal from the 6, and the Scarlet Knights lined up as if they were going to kick a 23-yard field goal.

How to Neuter a Wolf?
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 15:57 — cp1066Answer: Put them on the football field.
Sorry but the real joke is college football in the Triangle. You have to look three hours west, and one division down if you want to witness a football program that knows how to win season after season. If I didn't find Wolfpack fans so obnoxious I wouldn't have wasted my time posting this, but it was good to see you choke on Pizza Day. Southern Conference Davidson can beat you in basketball, and I promise that the boys in Boone could beat you on the gridiron.
Don't think so
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 21:18 — JPDOhioAs much as I respect Appy State's success in the FCS division (and I honestly do), to say they would win consistently against BCS teams, even those in the Triangle, is ridiculous. They couldn't beat NC State a couple of years ago when State was really bad. And that was a National Championship season for the Mountaineers. I loved the upset of Michigan, but it was a fluke against a disfunctional, losing team. Challenging the perception that Triangle football is overrated is fine, but you blew your credibility with your Southern Conference bias.
GAWD!! We can't get a break.
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 00:42 — nascarpackneckWe would have one by atleast two td's if RMFW hadn't gone down. That's okay though, next year we are going to be bad ass w/him and Glennon! Rose Bowl hopes!

Isn't it funny how state
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 23:38 — psh0117Isn't it funny how state loses and all they can do is make excuses and then bring up the UNC game. it's been over a month, can't you state fans come up with a better argument then typing 41-10 or 31-30? i guess not, it show how creative state fans are. And for the record, you lost your bowl game too. To a team that UNC spanked none the less.
I can see it now, state fans 10 years down the road, still losing, and still using that same old line 41-10. Maybe one day state fans will be able to be a little more clever with their arguments.
It sure is...
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 23:54 — YAR8packRemember Saturday, November 10th in 2007? We'll let you know about that one, too.
Totally different Rutgers team than when carowhina played them earlier in the year. I'm sure you weren't on the bandwagon just yet, so you won't remember that game.
If you read the other blogs in lieu of stating your redundant and uninformed opinion, you may realize that other people have pointed out how State's D was nowhere to be found. You may also realize how people have mentioned the swings in momentum that signaled the death knoll for State from the blocked punt and ridiculously dumb interception thrown by Beck. Oh, you sound like someone who caught the score on the TV and decided you knew all about the game. You already had it all worked out. Congrats.
As a parting gift, let me give you what you came for: Remember, remember the 25th of November. See you in 10 years.
Do I really care what you
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 00:09 — psh0117Do I really care what you think? Uh, No. I read all of the blogs and I didn’t really see the need to type the same things that other people already said. I know, I watched the entire game. And I saw firsthand how bad state played, regardless of how “good everyone thinks” Russell Wilson is and will be. I know that states defense sucks, that’s why they gave up 23 points in the 2nd half. But state fans don’t see that, all they can say is our “star player” got hurt. One person does not make a football TEAM. I probably know more about the game then you do. You’re probably one of those state fans who think they know everything, and you probably stopped watching at half time as soon as you found out Wilson wasn’t going to play, and you gave up on the game just like most state fans do.
And what exactly happened on the 25th of November? I think you may be referring to the 22nd. Maybe you should make sure you get the date right If you’re going to use it as an argument, otherwise it make you look like the stupid state fan you are!
You sure must care...are you sweet on me?
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 10:16 — YAR8packYou surely do care what other State fans and I have to say. You keep responding to this blog post. But you still continue to spout your diarrhea of the brain, mal-informed opinion. Hey, if you want folks to take your opinion mildly seriously, read theirs. Having said that, you still refuse to cut on your brain and realize that several individuals, and myself, have continually pointed out that State's D was incredibly terrible. Maintaining a soft-zone coverage after being routinely set asunder made no sense whatsoever. After all, a REAL football fan knows that the impotency of the offense will surely add to the overbearing weight a defense cannot contain. Yes, I'm challenging your fanhood.
And yes, one player can make a team. There may not be an "I" in "team," but there is a "me." Look at State's record before Wilson, and then look at their record with him. Seems to be overwhelming evidence to state that he does make the Wolfpack exceptionally better.
Thank you for hawking over my post and pointing out that I did in fact make a date error. You're right. It should read like this: Remember, remember the 22nd of November. You like that better, don't you? How about I throw a good ol' "Go to hell Carolina" in there, too?
Being that you're the overseer of the News and Observer blog posts, are there any hanging indents and misplaced modifiers that I missed? It's a blog, get over it. These are opinions. Do you know how that cliche goes? Everybody's got one. Just like everybody's got something else. And you're just being that specific part. Chill out.
Oh yeah. Remember, remember the 22nd of November. Go to hell, Carolina.
See you in 10 years. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
Gee, I’m so sorry I said
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 12:22 — psh0117Gee, I’m so sorry I said anything about you typing something was wrong. And Yes I know this is a blog and sometimes things get misspelled and what not, but when you are using a date as an argument and you get it wrong, it makes you look like you have no idea what you are talking about, which is true in most of your posts. You must not have read my last post all the way, because I did mention the defense you retard, but that’s not what this is about. I said it before and I’ll say it again. One player does not make your team. And you can spit out stats all you want about r.wilson, but the facts are the same regardless. With him in the games and out, state still has a losing record. Go and check. So i still find it hard to believe you that he makes state “exceptionally better.” Because in the games in which he played, not counting USC, W&M and USF, state is 5-6. I can’t say that he makes your team better when he can’t win more games. So you go ahead and challenge my fan hood if you want, I know how big of a fan I am of all sports, and how much I hate state and their obnoxious fans. I’ll do you one better....See You in 1 year!!!!! Oh, and GO TO HELL STATE!!!! I’m sure you’ll have something more idiotic say.
I touched a nerve, hehehe...
Tue, 12/30/2008 - 14:17 — YAR8packSo glad to see that the spirit of retardation knows no bounds. You're quite the clairvoyant example of that issue.
You rebuke the idea of State being a better team with Mr Wilson in the lineup by stating that the Wolfpack has a "5-6" record with him. Well, smart fellow, did you watch any of the South Carolina vs State game? I know you didn't, but you'll probably lie and say you did. With Mr Wilson in the lineup, State drove the ball quite well and played good defense. They even looked like they were in position to contend for a win in a "field-position" game. Then he got knocked out cold. Now, I'm sure you'll rebuff that and say something to the stupid effect of "look at the final score." To that, I can only reply by asking you to refer to the 22nd of November, 2008. Who was better on that day? What was that final?
The USF game was a complete cluster ****. State had a litany of players busted up and broken down. If your "superior" intellect will let you remember back that far, you'll recognize that Mr Wilson was one of the many players absent from that game. State's lineup was depleted...and that's putting it nicely.
Did you watch the porous defensive effort in the loss to BC? I know you didn't, but you'll lie and say you did. Did you watch the disgustingly pail and weak effort of the defense in the loss to Maryland? Yep, I didn't think so. I'm sure you'll question how I watched the State vs Maryland game. Yes, I have a subscription to AT&T wireless. That's how I got to watch it on ESPN360. You should know what a good defense can do for you...carowhina has had a decent one all year...aside from the 22nd of November. Mwahaha.
Whew. You probably need to take a break. All this thinking must have you rather tired. It's okay, the badman is about to leave you alone.
If YOU would've read MY post more carefully, you'd see that I pointed out that you tried to lambast all State fans by saying that "we" whined about not having Mr Wilson as the main issue for losing yesterday. His absence was a large reason for the loss, no one can refute that. However, the nonchalant effort of the defense proved to be the major reason for the loss. Did you get that? Reread the above paragraphs for clarity.
Now, you can go on the attack. And you can call me names all you want. Your name calling only proves that I've crept under your skin and you're as gullible as any other poor fan. Take this advice: Let it go. You'll never win. You're on a State blog post. I know there are poor fans who wonder over to the carowhina blogs and poke and prod you till you're foaming at the brim, which you're doing right now. Hehehehe. But let them be that way. Your lack of refrain proves how easy it is to understand your angst as just mis-channeled aggression for the shortcomings in your life. Let it go. Silence.
Aww, you're just a flirt. Tried to attack me with the ending to carowhina's fight song. You're too cute. By the way, did I mention that you should remember, remember the 22nd of November? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.
You’re one to talk about
Wed, 12/31/2008 - 00:40 — psh0117You’re one to talk about reading someone’s post, because if you would have read mine, you would have seen where I said that in the games wilson didn’t play state was 5-6, and that was USC, USF and W&M. The only reason I count USC is because he only attempted 5 passes in the first half before his ass got knocked out, and yes I did watch, I don’t understand how you can you say state drove the ball down the field well with wilson against USC, he only completed 1 pass, guess you missed that game. I always tune in to see state Lose; it happened a lot this year. And I’m sure you will have something to say about the 22nd of November, glad you could get the date right this time. But that’s fine, Because I don’t care. I don’t credit wilson with that win, I give the credit to unc’s offense and defense who played the worst they had all year. It was one loss and no one but state fans care anymore, because it;s their only argument. So please keep spitting all you want to about me not being a fan or not watching games or not reading other people’s post, because in the end I know who is right and who is wrong, and who wishes they had a better team. By the way, I did read your post, and I’m now a lot dumber after reading it. Yes I said most state fans said they lost because wilson didn’t play. And that’s true, not just on this site but on the wral page too, I saw more people saying wilson got hurt and that’s why they lost, then people saying their defense didn’t show up. I saw only person who on this site who said it was the defense, I would say you too, but I don’t count you as a person. I was just saying what I saw, I know why state lost, I just wanted to point how state fans always blame their losses on injuries, they’ve done it all year. Oh and I know this is a state blog, But you know you’ve done the same on Carolina Blogs, Don’t even try to say you haven’t gone on their talking your trash to UNC fans. The door swings both ways.
Don't tempt us
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 23:22 — YAR8packUgh, that loss really hurts.
Allow me to whine for a bit. I understand Russell was taken out to prevent further injury. But please don't let the kid walk out there suited up to play. Tell him to "hit the shower," and go to street clothes. There was no need to dangle the option of him possibly returning. That was like having Giselle Bunchen walking and posing in front of me in nothing but Victoria's Secrets finest and told that I couldn't do anything about it.
Beck was of course Beck. And people can say whatever they want about the heart and love D. Evans has for NC State, and that's great for morale, but that kid is terrible. Thank goodness that kid will be out of the position to possibly play for State ever again. C'mon, admit it people. The kid has never figured out that you have to step up to throw the ball. Don't back peddle and flail the ball like some ninny.
Mike Archer has done a pretty decent job for State all year, but the defense...well...where the hell was the defense? Rutgers didn't run any fancy plays. The lined up and smacked State around the field. State never adjusted.
Have no worries, State fans. TOB will make State a better program. And, hey, remember, remember the 22nd of November.
Sounds like a tough loss for NCSU...
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 22:27 — UNC1998Sorry for you guys. I had to work and couldn't see the game. I hope Wilson recovers soon. Just as I look at UNC's bowl game as a stepping stone, so should NCSU. It will benefit the team next year, and will hopefully lead to yearly bowl trips.
TOB's Loss
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 21:16 — nitwit1961TOB has to take the direct hit for this one...I hate that Harrison has struggled so at NC State, but the reality is he has never understood State's system (or college football in general). He just does not seem to know what anyone else on the State offense is doing during any plays other than handoffs. Yet TOB sent him out there to flounder around as Rutgers came back. After the second series of downs it was obvious he was not going to get it done...Daniel should come in when State intercepted in Rutgers’ territory...He has always shown better decision-making skills and there was no need for the strong arm. A field goal in that situation would have helped...a TD great...an interception was terrible. Once he put Daniel in there was a spark that resulted in a great drive for a TD...Then TOB struck again - WHY a 2-point conversion? There was no good that could come from that move and I think it undermined State's momentum. Once down the offense pressed and made mistakes. Oh, two more very important notes: 41-10 and 31-30...UNC fans should understand the significance.

Did Russell Wilson getting hurt also cause your defense to allow Rutgers to score, and score?
Quit sounding so pathetic - just say "we lost" - it happens all the time - you should really be used to it by now.

No excuses
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 22:30 — JPDOhioIt's not an excuse to acknowledge how important Russell Wilson is to the Pack. We have no depth at the position- none. Harrison Beck is just bad. Daniel Evans has more heart and integrity than 99% of the athletes you will ever see, but his performance today was typically uneven.
And, yes, Wilson getting hurt did cause the defense to score and score. The offense behind Back was so horrible that it put the defense in difficult positions. Wilson moved the team and kept Rutgers' offense off the field. Rutgers got more opportunities and better field position in the second half and took advantage of it. They deserve props for coming back to win. And the Pack's defense played well under the circumstances.
Undoubtedly you are...

Deja vu all over again
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 19:09 — JPDOhioOnce Russell was knocked out of the game, the result was not seriously in doubt. Beck was just as bad as I expected him to be, although I did have a glimmer of hope when Daniel threw the TD pass to Anthony Hill.
I thought maybe Daniel could pull off a win like he has done a couple of times in his career. I was pulling for the kid, because if anyone deserved an uplifting end to his career, it was Daniel Evans. But it wasn't to be.
I give TOB credit for keeping Russell out of the game when it appeared he could have played if he had too. Apparently, the risk of further injury was too great and TOB put Russell's health ahead of the chance to win the game. Good call.
The one thing I was wondering-- Was Glennon eligible to play without affecting his red shirt? I am not sure if playing in a bowl game counts and, if not, I wouldn't have minded seeing him get a shot. If anyone knows for sure, I would be interested in the answer.
Anyway, good finish to the season for the Pack. I think we have a lot to look forward to and I wouldn't be surprised to see State contend as early as next year.
tough game
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 18:42 — gvillegatrreminds me of a game earlier in the year when a certain team lost their QB and were leading handy. he got hurt and all hell broke loose ... losing by less than a TD.
I still thought NCSU gave good effort and played well with a few exceptions namely Harrison Beck.
tough game
Mon, 12/29/2008 - 18:59 — wolfpacker24Tough loss for the Pack after leading at the half. All Pack fans should be proud of this team for fighting even when one of the ACC's most dynamic players left the game. Looking forward to 2009 when the NC schools will not only dominate in basketball (as usual) but in football as well. Go Pack!
(BTW, upon returning to Raleigh Harrison Beck should pack up his stuff and find a D-II school for next year. He won't sniff the field with RW and Glennon around)
