Pack 7-foot recruit eager for ACC play

Bookmark and Share

N.C. State’s newest basketball recruit says he has never played a game in the United States but he already knows about ACC basketball.

Jordan Vandenberg is a native of Australia, grew up in Melbourne and his only experience playing in the U.S. is open gyms at the University of Nevada Reno and at Boise State.

But the 7-foot, 235-pound center knows about college basketball.

"[The ACC] is said to be the hardest competition in college basketball and it is always fierce, fast and strong," Vandenberg said via email.

The opportunity to play in the league is one of the things that made State attractive to him, he said.
But to play in the ACC, Vandenberg knows he needs to gain weight. He hopes to be able to contribute next season.

"I bring length so I would be able to change shots and rebound most importantly," he said. "I know I will be playing limited minutes until I can fully hold my own physically."

Vandenberg chose State over Utah Valley, Boise State and Nevada-Reno.
State assistant coach Pete Strickland spotted Vandenberg during the center’s one year at the Australian Institute of Sport.

Vandenberg said he admires the play of fellow Australian 7-foot, 260-pound Andrew Bogut of the Milwaukee Bucks, a former Utah star, and 7-foot, 250-pound Paul Gasol of the Los Angeles Lakers, who is a native of Spain.

"I admire most Pau Gasol and Andrew Bogut," he said. "They are very skilled and versatile big men."

Vandenberg is State’s fifth basketball recruit in the Class of 2009.
State also has signed 6-6 forward Josh Davis of Raleigh Athens Drive, 6-5 guard Lorenzo Brown of Roswell (Ga.) Centennial, 6-5 guard Scott Wood of Marion, Ind., and 6-7 forward Richard Howell of Marietta (Ga.) Wheeler.

What's He Worth ?

Fantastic.....Now State can begin their 30th fresh start and new beginning in a row. I hope this kid held out for something like the salary that Mary Easley got, not like the stereo system that Chris Washburn got ..Oh Wait....he stole that.....NEVERMIND !

Congratulations on beating out Utah Valley, Boise State and Nevada-Reno for Mr. Vanderberg's services!

Thanks Melvin

for the sarcastic sentiments. I am surprised it took this long for someone to bite.

irrelevant

this seven footer is so irrelevant, I didnt even see the fun in commenting earlier ... just so you know!

Mr. Irrelevant

Irrelevent is not the same as unknown. He doesn't have to be a star. A role player who is not a liability will be fine with me. Time will tell if the kid can play or not. I will wait and see.

question

Who was the last true 7 footer the pack had that actually played significant minutes?

TB

Pretty recently, Tommy Burleson?

Nevitt

Chuck Nevitt from 80-82 was probably the most recent.

More recently, Andrew Brackman and Todd Fuller were both close at 6'11"

Chuck

Nevitt actually played for NCS from 78/79 - 81/82. In his four year career he averaged 3.0 ppg & 2.4 rpg. He was listed at 7' 5".

Absolutely

A breather for Smith, with potential to pay big dividends in a year or two. Good pick-up. Alot of young people on the court next season, a fresh start. Hope they get alot of PT in the fluff games at the beginning of the season, as we will need them in the meat of the season next year.

We'll start to see if Lowe is going to survive or be Amato-like. His recruiting is decent...but can he coach them? Good job coaches, now let's start climbing out of obscurity.

Needed

Agree. Potential is what the pack needs.

Needed pick up.

Given the lack of depth in the frontcourt, I am glad this kid decided to come to State. If he can give the Pack 5-10 decent minutes so that Tracy can get an occasional rest, he will be worth the scholarship.
