ACC Now

Off-week blues for Duke

Bookmark and Share
Tags: ACC Now | Duke

DURHAM — The ACC rarely has given Duke well-timed bye weeks in this decade. That’s what happens when you don’t compete in the ACC. But Cutcliffe is OK with a bye after three weeks and a 2-1 record.

Duke’s next game is another home tilt against Virginia on Set. 27. The Devils second bye week comes a week later after a road game at Georgia Tech on Oct. 4.

As good as Duke looks now, the final seven-week stretch, with road games at Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, Clemson and Virginia Tech, will show how far the Devils still have to go to execute a power move on the ACC.

As Good As Duke Looks Now?
You've got to be kidding. This is as good as Duke is going to look all season. Wow. 2-1 against the cupcake trio of James Madison, Navy and powerhouse Northwestern. NC State can't wait for this game!
Sorry. I have to call bad decision-making when I see it. Thaddeus Lewis is making a heroic effort. He's going to set many Duke records. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=191344 . He's the one-man offense. And he might have been great somewhere else.
He is interception free so far this year. That's awesome. But he is Sisyphus with a football. Throw it there, watch it come back here. Not interceptions mind you, but a defense crafted like fine Swiss cheese.
Navy 41-31. Against the Navy Powerhouse. Whoo hoo! Respect.... Represent... ...uhh. Vote...?
Mr. Cutliffe, hey, thanks for trying, but this is not a stepping stone job, it's a place where you step after you've left the horse paddock. Yecch. Wipe that off your feet.
Duke is not a finisher in football. It's ironic that their only success came under Steve Spurrier, known for almost winning a number of championships at Florida, not succeeding as an NFL coach, and recognized for his constipated sideline histrionics. Isn't he the one who throws the sacrificial vote year after year toward Duke in the top 25 polls? http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/football/2007-08-02-spurrier-duke... Seems cruel after all these years. And disrespectful to teams that matter.
So Duke, thanks for contributing this year. Thanks for the 'big wins.' In a down year, the ACC appreciates your showing up. As Caulton Tudor put it, it was such a tough ACC showing in the first few weeks that a Duke game MATTERED. Well, not to worry. We don't expect more.
See you next year.
