Tom O'Brien has a live chat scheduled for 4 p.m. today on gopack.com.
The Wolfpack football coach will no doubt be asked about the increased expectations for Year 3. Some yahoo already picked State to win the Atlantic Division, which O'Brien found amusing.
"If you guys knew what the heck you were doing, you would be doing something else," O'Brien said. "As I told the team, nobody picked Boston College last year."
The Eagles, picked to finish fourth in the division by the media, repeated as division champs in '08. O'Brien, who coached at BC from 1996 to 2006, recruited the bulk of the players on the BC roster that won the division in '07 and '08.
O'Brien told his current team that he doesn't think they're as good as the team he left in Boston College.
"It doesn't mean we can't be that good," O'Brien said. "Today, we're not that good, let's see if we can get to be that good. That's the challenge."
One aspect working in O'Brien's favor — State doesn't play an ACC game until October. Given the way O'Brien's first two teams started — 1-5 and 2-5 — a four-game prep for the conference schedule can only help.

Pack Picked 1
Thu, 06/04/2009 - 09:15 — heelsno1I sincerely hope that NC State wins their division with only one regular season conference loss...the final game in Raleigh on Nov 28.
Pack picked #1
Sun, 06/07/2009 - 15:12 — TOLEGOUntil we get someone to block for Wilson and staff I don't see how we can win it all. I think we will be somewhat better but not 1st. FSU will win it this year if they can keep enough players out of jail.
To UNC Fans... At least we have a parking lot to do anything in. You can party at University Mall and then ride the bus over to the game. And why are you going to spend all this money to rehab a stadium you just finished a reab on? To keep up with NCSU!
I have attended the last 2 NCSU at UNC games and there is always more Red in the stadium than blue. Well last year there was more aluminum on the home side in the 2nd half than red or blue. So if aluminum is your new school color then you do have better fans. If it was a basketball game the place would have been packed until then end.
Facts
Tue, 06/09/2009 - 14:22 — heelsno1For the record, UNC has won 65% of the games played against NC State, so it is really the Pack that needs to "keep up". The venue in Raleigh is a great one for tailgating (...does not hurt to have the fairgrounds' parking lots next door), but I would not trade Kenan Stadium directly on campus for any other site in the ACC.
By the way, I genuinely support the Wolfpack except when they play the Heels. Lastly, there were plenty of fans in blue at Kenan when T.A. fumbled away a sure win for the team in red a few years ago!
NC State has the BEST fan base!!!
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 11:11 — pack4lifeIt's called having school pride no matter how bad your team is unlike yall tar holes that only surpport your team through the good times. One day we will be able to celebrate because we have won the bcs orage bowl something unx has not ever done in school history. Us pack fans have stayed dedicated to our WOLFPACK for years and when you stay that dedicated you will get honored someday because what goed around comes around.
GO PACK!!!!
Re: NC State has the Best fan base!!!
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 16:54 — Heels20This NC State fan base you're referring to...is it the 60,000 drunken fans who open fire in the parking lot and scream while their offense is on the field?
Huh?
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 11:37 — SurferNot so sure that I agree that the State fan base is better because State loses more often. Granted, having "bad times" offers the opportunity to stick with the team. Although UNC has had a few down times (8-20) and the recent bass fishing tournament loss, why would you think that UNC fans were not dedicated during those times? Having mostly good times should not penalize a fan base.
On a serious note, nothing wrong with your dedication, keep it up.
Until Butch can defeat TO'B
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 13:13 — AgentPierceUntil Butch can defeat TO'B head-head at their respective schools, the usual Franklin Street braggadocio must be muted (or be very embarrassing for UNCers).
HA!!
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 17:49 — gvillegatrwhen UNC was kicking your arses ( a few years back) all you guys did was still talk crap. merry-go-round will continue to go round and round. just shut up and keep talking smack. If you don't have anything negative to say about UNC, then don't chime in! lol! but don't tell anyone what they can or can't do, here, at ACCNow.
HA!! is right!!
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 12:59 — bradleyb123Over the last 23 years (yes, nearly a quarter century), Carolina has beaten State 12 times, and State has beaten Carolina 11 times (a score that will likely be even come November).
Carolina and State are practically in a dead heat over a very long period of time, with State seizing the upper-hand, currently. Two years ago, Carolina was beaten up and down the field, with only a couple of timely interceptions for touchdowns making it look closer than it really was. And we all know what happened last year. And this year, Carolina is full of questions on offense. Meanwhile, State appears to just be getting better and better, and deeper (their only real problem last year).
You must be referring to the seven wins in a row Carolina had over State. I guess you conveniently forgot about the five wins in row that State had over Carolina that immediately preceded that streak.
In a nutshell, Carolina and State are pretty much tit4tat. In fact over the last 50 years, Carolina has won 302 games and State has won 300 games.
The difference is, Carolina fans somehow have the mistaken impression that they are just DOMINANT over State, when in reality, we're pretty close over the years. Carolina just won a lot more over State back when they wore leather straps for helmets, so they have a big advantage in the overall series record.
Re: HA!! is right!!
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 15:00 — Heels2023 years? The only significance I see in the number 23 is that Jordan wore it (yeah, he's a Heel as well). Let's take a deeper look...
25 years: 14-11, Heels; 30 years: 18-12, Heels; 35 years: 20-15, Heels; 40 years: 22-18, Heels
Even if you just include the past 40 years, Carolina has always had a nice 4 or 5 game cushion. Eventually, it just gets ugly, as Carolina leads head-to-head 62-29-6. I have a lot of respect for Tom O'Brien, but your team has lived and died by Russell Wilson, who most likely is only going to be around one more year.
Our biggest hole to fill: Wide Receiver. Good thing that's the easiest position to fill.
Your biggest hole: Offensive Line. If Wilson goes down and you don't have a QB that can escape the pocket, you're in trouble. I don't care if Philip Rivers is your QB, you can't win major football games without an O-Line.
Looking ahead
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 19:04 — JPDOhioHeels20:
You are right on two counts. State lived and died with RW and the O-Line matters. In fact, much of the Wolfpack troubles in the past few years can be linked to weak QBs and O-Lines. (Not to mention an egocentric head coach, but I digress).
On the QB side, RW is the key, but I do think we have a capable backup, unlike the post-Rivers years. It is no secret that any successful team has to have a good QB and I feel better about that position at State now than I have since Rivers left.
The O-Line is a work in process, but I expect it to be good to start and continue to improve as the season goes on. TOB has a proven track record of developing great O-Lines and there is no reason that success won't continue at State.
Expectations are indeed high. But, unlike the Chuck years, there is good reason for higher expectations.
Re: Looking ahead
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 19:43 — Heels20I agree that Mike Glennon is a good back-up, but that O-Line needs some work before he can fit into the offense. I played against Robert Crisp in high school and I can tell you that he is definitely a good pick-up. O'Brien does have a history of building great O-Lines (that 2007 O-Line that was protecting Matt Ryan was one of the best I've seen), but a lot of people don't realize how horrible the offensive line was when Chuck left (Daniel Evans was a good QB in an awful situation). That being said, this year's game is going to come down to coaching. With all starters returning to UNC's D-Line, 2 LBs and Charles Rodgers and Kendric Burney in the secondary, UNC will have a far more talented defense. If TJ Yates can stay healthy, he'll be protected by an O-Line of 3 (I believe) returning starters, and he'll receive help from a very good backfield of Shaun Draughn, Ryan Houston and Jamal Womble. Losing Nicks, Tate and Foster will hurt, but it won't break us. I think that Carolina clearly has more talent (how are Taylor Gentry and TJ Graham starters in the ACC?), but Butch hasn't taken State seriously (see 41-10 and a not-so-close 31-27 victory). If the Heels step up, they should win. However, if history repeats itself, State will be ready with a great coach and a great QB.
My guess
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 20:00 — JPDOhioIf Butch and Tom stay where they are, we will see competitive, entertaining games, year after year. And maybe even a second game for the ACC title.
... and you
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 17:22 — gvillegatrpresume you will win this year. what is the difference?
Agree
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 10:27 — SurferRight on G'ville. And the bubble continues to grow, "Meanwhile, State appears to just be getting better and better, and deeper (their only real problem last year)." They have played how many games since their 6-7 season, oh yeah the dominant, vastly attended, superior to all other programs, Spring Game (heard they won that one too). Their hype is unmatched, so I guess we should just leave it alone. Anything less than an ACC Championship for them will be a let down, so let's just let it play out and see how it goes. They should be better, but are they yet? Time will tell.

RE: mediocre spelled backwards...
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 13:19 — bradleyb123You're right, spelling mediocre backwards makes it the opposite of mediocre, which would be NC State.
Thanks for the compliment!
way to swap that around to
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 15:55 — swisspfauway to swap that around to what you wanted to hear
Thank you!
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 13:01 — bradleyb123Thank you!
The funny thing is, you probably think otherwise for Carolina.
New tune
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 11:24 — SurferNot a State fan myself, but you gotta like TOB somewhat, he is definitely not Chuck, but this is somewhat of a different tune than what he was singing after the 4 run stretch at the end of last year? Does he know something we don't? Is he just positioning? Most likely. Although, they don't play an ACC game until Oct., they do have the Gamecocks for the first game. USC should be better prepared against RW this year.
surfer??
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 17:36 — gvillegatr"USC should be better prepared against RW this year."
better prepared? thats like saying someone who just hit for a cycle, in baseball, can do even better in the following game!? dam* near impossible.
USC did everything BUT put RW out for the season. while he was in the game, he looked like Ryan Leaf ... the NFL version!
but, hey, here's to USC being better prepared against RW this season!!
RW
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 11:35 — SurferGville,
That comment was for all the Staters that boast that they are dominating the other team when RW is in the game...i.e. USC was up only 3-0 when RW went out?
Actually
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 12:04 — JamuncwActually it was 0-0 when russell got hurt and state was inside usc's 40 at the time. If he gets hurt again, I will feel a little better with Glennon coming in as opposed to Evans or Beck who were backups last year.
At the end of the year with experience, RW did dominate the game. If you do not believe me watch coverage of the miami and unc games. The usc game was his first collegiate game and on the road and not many freshman qbs dominate the other team in that situation.
Thanks
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 12:17 — SurferThanks for confirming. Agree about Glennon. I have to say though, I am going to miss seeing Beck coming in and throwing all over the field, the gun slinger that he is.
What's to miss?
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 18:12 — JPDOhioBeck comes in, throws an interception on the 1st or 2nd play. Opponent drives down the field, using up anywhere from 2-10 minutes depending on field position. Beck comes in throws an interception on the 1st or 2nd play. Opponent comes in more of the same. Evans comes in, same result. Beck's playing time per game- 2 to 5 minutes. But, hey, we appreciate quality over quantity.
You got it
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 10:16 — SurferRight on JPD. Yep, throwing it all over the field, I didn't say to his own recievers. Has a good strong arm, but the defensive backs definitely perked up when Beck came into the game, kind of added a bit of excitement, if you know what I mean.
Yes I did
Wed, 06/03/2009 - 10:23 — JPDOhioDepending on your perspective, you were either disappointed that the excitement was short-lived or relieved that the pain at least came in short intervals. But it was never boring.
RE: New tune
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 13:21 — bradleyb123You're right about them being better prepared against RW. The GOOD news is that they aren't playing RW. They're playing NC State, and the entire team should be much better than the team they faced last year. And SC has lost a LOT (if you can name 10 SC players from last year, probably 7 of them are gone).
Expect a good game this time. Oh, and it's in the not-so-friendly confines of Carter-Finley stadium. I don't know if we'll win or not, but expect a good game.
tisk, tisk.
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 17:45 — gvillegatrI'm really not trying to break ballls here, but ...
teams ARE playing against RW. the way he can effect a game is in the balll park of Michael Vick ... at least least year when he was healed. maybe teams will figure him out the second time around? RW is not your traditional QB but he has been very effective.
friendly confines of C-F?? someone tell me if I am wrong, but ncsu has a losing record at home the last 5 years (10-17) against Div 1-A teams.
I WISH
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 09:50 — gvillegatrsome ncsu fan would comment on their home record for the last 5 years ...
I will
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 13:15 — bradleyb123I will. The last five years were Amato's last three horrible years, and TOB's first two rebuilding years. Sure, it's been a bad stretch.
I notice neither of you mentioned the five years that preceded the last five years. At least while we're rebuilding, the pain has been eased somewhat by utter and thorough dominance of Carolina! Although, that won't be enough this year. You can expect Carolina to lose in Raleigh, but I will expect much more than that this year.
Positioning
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 12:26 — JPDOhioI think TOB's comments are designed to avoid overconfidence and promote competition and work ethic among the players. These qualities were not valued and therefore did not exist in the previous coaching regime.
Agree
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 11:49 — SurferRight on JPD. That was the point of my post and that the new tune was different than, "We have the best program in the State" song. TOB's common sense is now coming through and that is why he is an okay guy, in comparison to Chuck the Chest, "let's have a parade". TOB does have the "State Champion" shirts going against him, but they were probably not his idea.
I blame Mack Brown.
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 12:19 — JamesinWillowSpringsI blame Mack Brown.
Love that O'Brien
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 10:48 — uBniceI am a Tar Heel fan who roots for our sister school, NCSU, when they are not playing the Heels. Man, I love that O'Brien. He is a hard-nosed, tell it like it is type of guy. His players respond. They responded at Boston College and they are responding at NCSU. Hopefully Butch Davis and the football Heels can consistently beat O'Brien and the Wolfpack. Last football season showed what an O'Brien team can pull off against even a heavily favored UNC team. Ouch!
Sister school? So what's it
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 12:26 — JamesinWillowSpringsSister school? So what's it like to get your ass kicked by your sister, twice?
;)
Sister school? So what's it
Mon, 06/01/2009 - 15:24 — hellfishYeah boy ,on the average NCS beats UNC 3 times in 10yrs in Football ,so start getting used to being beaten regularly like UNC does NCS in EVERY SPORT.
By what measure?
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 13:07 — bradleyb123If you look at the overall series record, you are technically correct. But the vast majority of those wins came back when they wore leather straps for helmets.
Over the last 23 years, Carolina is 12-11 against State. Over the last 50 years, Carolina has won 302 games, and State has won 300 games.
So if you consider the modern age of football, Carolina doesn't win the way you think. But keep clinging to that overall series record as if it means something. Maybe that will make you feel better as TOB moves to 3-0 against Butchie in November.
On average, only 3 times
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 09:07 — JamesinWillowSpringsOn average, only 3 times out of 10?
Since the ACC's formation (1953), State is 24-31 against the Heels with two seven-game losing streaks. All things considered, fairly even...certainly not this 3-for-10 nonsense you're spouting.
Of course, you're probably like most Heels, boasting about victories since before Charlie Choo Choo was born, as if the drubbing of a varsity squad scrimmaging a against a bunch of ROTC scrubs from Raleigh carries the same weight as last year's 41-10 thrashing.
Hey, if that's what it takes for you to steel yourself in the face of overwhelming evidence that Tom owns Butch and will continue the streak this season, then by all means, go right ahead.
History
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 11:59 — SurferJames, If you are talking history, let's throw down 52-20, UNC. But, by far my favorite, was this past year, when someone noted that UNC's margin of victory in two basketball games did not exceed NCSU's margin of victory in football. I am still looking for the shirt that memorializes that feat.
That was a nice win for the Heels
Tue, 06/02/2009 - 13:18 — bradleyb123I'm partial to the 48-3 shellacking we laid down on the Heels several years ago. And in the year that followed, I believe we curb-stomped them again, 40-6.
