ACC Now

O'Brien doesn't repeat Sendek's mistake

Bookmark and Share

Here's an example of how football coach Tom O'Brien understands his environment at N.C. State where former basketball coach Herb Sendek never did.

It's been said occasionally that O'Brien and Sendek have similar personalities, and that's true. Both are disciplined coaches with absolute belief in their systems who don't feel the urge to clown in front of the TV cameras.

But when O'Brien was asked about defeating East Carolina on Saturday he said that game was extra important because the Pirates are a rival.

"There’s 12 games you play, but certainly the hype around certain games is larger than others," O'Brien said. "So it is a bigger game than it was against Clemson or William & Mary ... It certainly is a big, big deal for our football team and our school that we win this game."

Sendek didn't see it that way. After N.C. State's disastrous, 95-71 loss at home to North Carolina on Feb. 22, 2006, I asked Sendek if it hurt to lose six in a row to the rival Tar Heels.

"Sure," he said. "It would frustrate us to lose six in a row to anybody."

That was the wrong answer for fans at N.C. State, and Sendek was off to Arizona State a couple months later. N.C. State fans needed to be sure that losing to a rival hurt Sendek as much as it hurt them.

Losing six in a row to North Carolina annoys Wolfpackers far more than six straight losses to Georgia Tech or Maryland.
O'Brien seems to understand that. Even if he doesn't post as high an ACC winning percentage as Sendek, O'Brien connects with N.C. State fans on this important point, and that will serve him well.

Poor wittle State fans got their feewings huwt

Get over it State fans. UNC's biggest rival is Duke. Always has and always will be. Sure NC State gives UNC somewhat of a bigger challenge on the football field but hasn't UNC won 11 of the 15 games on the grid iron vs NC State? It must suck to have no team claim you as their biggest rival. ECU is trying to give you that and you can't accept it because for some reason you feel to cool for their school. ECU beat you in BBall for Pete's sake last year. Sidney complained about having to play on ECU's home floor. You wolfers will never get it that you are the true red headed step child in the big picture of the local rivalry. Stick to your rivalry with ECU, atleast you can win 50% of the time against them.

"stop being so jealous that

"stop being so jealous that our team can actually beat a ranked team."

Whaaa? Gee, I thought thats what the Pack did last weekend by bringing down the mighty 15th ranked Pirates. LMAO

Don't overlook the recruiting picture

No matter how pitiful ALL NC teams seem to be as we speak, excluding Wake Forest of course, one cannot overlook the huge dividends winning translates into reaping recruits sitting on the fence in the state of North Carolina.

Andre Brown selected his colors correctly, otherwise he would have been just like Khalif Mitchell (former UNC lineman) and many others who have suffered greatly due to their poor choices. Two years of beating ECU by an in-state recruit means quite a bit of enjoyment for many years to come, and bragging rights for life for Andre Brown.

Putting all bowl trips and rankings aside, beating an in-state rival is easily more important. All this talk of TOB. I actually think Skip Holtz offers a better story. Just how long will he stay at ECU? A place where fans are as impatient and delusional than anywhere else on the planet- and for what reason I don't know. When did they all wake up and decide Greenville NC was a breeding ground for football?

Nobody ever said Tobacco road was football country- but people still enjoy the game of football. Looking back, ECU's wins over VT and WV are greatly dimenished by how both teams have played recently. Is Colorado that good this year? But the greatest air release of the year came last Saturday when a tiny wolf paw clawed an opening, bringing the Pirate's grand, hot air balloon ride to a sudden and fatal crash landing.

Sure, there were survivors, and ECU will go on to have a decent year, but the scars from that day won't heal for a long, long time.

Reality is sometimes difficult to swallow by folks that don't live in it, and it is much easier for the lonely losers to call names, make excuses, and discount others as it is the only way they deal with their pain.

It actually only shows just how poorly you have invested your time, money, and emotions in a team and a place nobody really even knows or cares little about.

We own the pirates during

We own the pirates during our rebuilding years...imagine what it's going to be like when we've got this thing up and running?! O'Brien is 3-0 against the "carolinas". He gets it.

Well atleast a member of the

Well atleast a member of the media is sharing in the rare ocassion of opportunity to get all giddy inside for a NCSU fan. Tom O'Brien..oh yes..that former BC coach that could get ya an just-above-medicore season, but slide in a bowl game more often than not. No headlines, no upsets, just expected wins. The "Groundhog Day's" coach they called him. The coach everyone was about to throw out of town. A man, who's intelligent if nothing else, is to be admired. Soon to be a reject and smart enough to know it, left before it happen, diminshing any possibilty of having a blemish on the ol resume. Medicore met medicore, and NCSU's AD was saved from another long, miserable and embarassing coaching search.
Easy to get all giddy over someone when they win. And Tom will win some, probably alot more than that overly vibraint clown with the funny shoes and shades.
Fact be known however, Tom O'Brien could beat ECU 4 more games in a row this season, and the typical fan will still have a doubt of uncertaintly. A really good ECU (by ECU's standards anyhow) was exposed. The 15 secs of fame ECU had beating VT was sure to be short-lived. VT still isnt your typical VT team, even after barely beating a pretty decent Tar Heel team. And ECU isnt the team theyre portayed as right now, especially after their over-rated staus has been exposed by an irrelevant to any major sport program, in NCSU. And although beating any #14 ranked team is nearly a superbowl, for State fans, theres no need to pat ol Tom's back, over that exposed team from Greenville NC. If one judged the time length allowed by State fans for Tom'OBrien making some noise compared of what Herb Sendek got, then you'll have to assume the ol'marine will be there 4 or 5 more seasons before retiring. Consider that the level of sucess those pitiful State fans have endured in the last 20 something years, have to be worse than what Tom O'Brien will suceed there. No big bowl games, no championships, occasional Fla St wins, and if that more vibraint, younger, and yes, sucessful coach from Chapel Hill doest have the Tar Heels taking off as quickly as expected, then ol'Tom may slip another fluke/non-fluke win over those hated with a passion, Heels.
Either way, Tom is getting old and State fans will not have to suffer with so-so sucess as long as BC fans did, nor will the misery last as long as Sendek's tenure.

you're a dumbass. nothing in

you're a dumbass. nothing in your post is valid. give it up, and stop being so jealous that our team can actually beat a ranked team.

sendek OK in my book

Seems to me the only folks who didn't/don't like Sendek are State fans and N&O staff. Like the rest of the civilized world, I thought he was a really good coach. I hated to see him go.

Hey ThomasPaine

Awww.......idn't dat cute. An ECU fan trying to play tough guy when they play in a second.....excuse me, third ranked conference. Hey, I hear that Conference USA is offering the Mighty Doughboys from the University of Pillsbury a chance to join the conference.

I'm with you on that

I'm with you on that buddy, thomas paine, mouthing off about a NC State calling EZU a rival?? Tom O' Brien plainly stated that any team that has the misfortune to have any Carolina on their uniform should be a rival to any true Wolfpack teams and fans.  Looking at your beloved Pirates, you won't be a rival, because when the Pack beats your ass, it just another game and nothing is gained from it. But, for ya'll, if you win, you act like it's the best thing since sliced bread and peanut butter. You won't be tearing  down the "Carter" no time soon......

ECU - NCSU ROLLS REVERSED *

How things have changed!..... NCState Coach calling ECU "a Rival" and this game "more important than Clemson game." And despite "upsetting" East Carolina, Pirates are still ranked #23 in the nation, still will likely win 9-10 games and still play in a bowl game..... while NC State will still be sitting at home in December.... cuddling their memories. Good thing state has their "super bowl" on sept. 20th to cling to!!!!

aww, looks like a

aww, looks like a sore-losing ecu fan here. maybe he's just upset cuz he knows that even if ecu wins 9-10 games, nobody else will care because they play in conference usa. even when ecu is supposed to run the table and be the bcs buster, they can't beat the wolfpack. must suck for you thomas

"ROLLS" reversed

wow so apparently its getting easier and easier to get a degree from EZU....

hopefully the "ROLLS" will never be reveresed in that aspect between the universities......

ECU - NCSU Rolls Reversed

Underachievers?

He's 3-0 against Carolina and ECU, our "self-proclaimed" rivals. Obviously he's ready to pump the Pack up for games. 5-6 as a first season coach who inherited a disaster program from the previous coach isn't too shabby.

Go O'Brien!

If O'Brien can "pump the

If O'Brien can "pump the Pack up", should they have looked as lackluster as they did against W&M, or gotten blown out against a mediocre South Carolina team in primetime, or similarly blown out in their ACC opener against Clemson, or get shutout at home by an average Maryland team with a chance to go to a bowl game last year?  That's why Carolina has won 32 NCAA championships to State's 2.  They understand that it's all about the big picture, while the pup-pack don't care if they lose every game except to a Conference USA team.

haha, this guy is a joke!

haha, this guy is a joke! this is coming from a unc team that is supposed to win the coastal division with the "great" butch davis. not looking so good though...the first game against a real team and unc loses. and yeah, if state cared about titles in women's soccer and field hockey, then i probably wouldn't be a fan. since the topic of this post is actually football, lets talk about football...neither state or unc has a national title, but who has more conference titles? that's what i thought chump

So sayeth the girls' soccer

So sayeth the girls' soccer and field hockey school.

32 NCAA championships?

Does the 32 NCAA championships include the imaginary "5th" basketball "championship"?

Just once I'd like a EweNC

Just once I'd like a EweNC fan to be able to have a football conversation and keep it to football.

Of course...

it seems so obvious! That's why State teams are perennial underachievers. They don't care if they win a lot, or even have a winning record, just that it matters that the coach cares that they lose to their rivals! No wonder they replaced Sendek with Lowe. Lowe really cares when they get blown out of the building by Carolina, much more than when it happens to a cellar-dwelling Virginia team. I always figured beating a conference team (Clemson) should matter more than beating a rival ECU (but don't say ECU is a rival to a State fan or they'll laugh at the notion) that isn't in your conference. At least O'Brien has his priorities in order. Or not.

I agree that in the big

I agree that in the big picture the Clemson game is a bigger game but only for the conference standings. Also throw in the fact that Clemson and NC State fans are the most Delusional fan bases in the ACC and you have a recipe for the annual "our teams are never as good as we think they are" bowl. So that makes it interesting, BUT...... the instate rivalry that is ECU vs NC State is a bigger game just as the SC vs Clemson game is bigger to Clemson. Poor NC State just wants to find someone to pay attention to them since their biggest rival in Chapel Hill treats the rivalry like a the stepchild since Duke is actually UNC's biggest rival and visa versa. It's good that Cow raisers have ECU to measure themselves against. The Conference USA is more the Pack's speed.

hmm, if state is not unc's

hmm, if state is not unc's rival, then why would all of unc's fans rush the field when unc beat state a few years ago at kenan? PWNED! give it up, you're a loser and your statements are inaccurate

Who is UNC's rival in football? Duke?

Duke is a great football rival!  You should really get worked up for that game.  Carolina fans are the attention starved fans that feel the need to comment on a non-UNC article.  Please say hello to my carolina grad brother on one of the many recruiting websites I am sure you are constantly tracking that always paints a brighter future for your football program....maybe one of these decades it will be right.  NC State football is an event no matter who we are playing.  Fans turn out to fill the stadium and enjoy tailgating in our "cow" pastures.  You sound jealous that carolina did not /has not participated in a what was great game for both programs......the ECU game is always a great atmosphere.......I am sure you get the same feeling at a UNC vs Duke football game.

Of course...

perennial underachievers?

perennial underachievers? state? let's see...sid's first year state was picked to finish last, yet finished with 20 wins including a win over #3 UNC and a run to the acc championship game. TOB's first year? takes a weak team to 5-7, while butch davis goes just 4-8. i think  it is very unfair to label state as the underachieving team....unc is the team thats "supposed to win the title" every year in bball, but they keep falling short. not to mention how all you unc homers have picked unc to win the coastal division in football. you sir, are an idiot.

absolutely

I agree on this one. It hurts to lose to anyone, don't get me wrong. However, Monday morning at work it all comes down to the "water-cooler" conversations.

that is...

...exactly right Ken. Nice writeup.

.... as high aa acc winning

.... as high aa acc winning percentage. puleeze!!!
