DURHAM — True freshman Johnny Williams caught 11 passes for 135 yards during Duke's 24-20 loss to Northwestern on Saturday, the most by a Blue Devils freshman since Eron Riley caught four passes for 130 yards against Clemson in 2005.
But he could have had a lot more.
Trailing 17-10, Williams caught a short pass from Thaddeus Lewis, got to the middle of the field for a 31-yard gain, appeared to be headed for the end zone, but then tripped untouched.
"Johnny is a really good football player,'' coach David Cutcliffe said. "I want him to keep his feet a little bit better when he catches the ball, and finishing. He is a really good yards-after-the-catch guy. I think Johnny still has the early-in-his-career jitters and is getting used to it."
Other notes:
• Lewis had a 16-yard rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter — his first score on the ground of the year, and fourth in his career. He also made 24 of his 42 pass attempts for 256 yards. "We are going tolearn from this one because we just didn't make the plays down the stretch to give us a 'W,''' he said. "They were the better team tonight."
• Like in Week 1, back-up quarterback Zack Asack played for one series in the first half. But this time, he helped the Blue Devils score – marching them 87 yards in 16 plays, capped by a 21-yard field goal.
• On the first play of the game, Duke senior cornerback Jabari Marshall set the new school record for career kickoff return yards with a 14-yard run-back, passing Randy Jones, who had 1,890.
• Senior wide receiver Eron Riley appeared hurt an ankle in the second quarter while blocking on a running play. He sat out the third quarter but returned in the fourth, finishing with four catches for 28 yards.
• One bright spot, according to Cutcliffe: The Blue Devils never gave up, and never hung their heads.
"It is all about getting better and having fun playing football,'' he said. "My job is to get them prepared so they can have fun. The fans cannot sense this, but the energy on our sideline in the second half was pheomenal. It makes me dadgum sick that these kids came up short.
