CHAPEL HILL – Bryn Renner didn’t let the moment escape.
After everything the Tar Heels had been through this year – the nine NCAA violations, their coach being fired before the season began, and losing four ACC games in a little more than a month – Renner wanted to thank his leader, the man who he said pushed the Tar Heels to another win: coach Everett Withers.
UNC’s 37-21 victory over rival Duke on Saturday afternoon at Kenan Stadium increased the Tar Heels' postseason bowl prospects, and it allowed them to keep the Victory Bell. But this win also allowed Renner to thank Withers and give him a game ball in front of his teammates in the locker room.
“We wanted to get the Victory Bell for coach Withers,” Renner said. “I think that was big for us to incorporate a game ball for him.”
After a home win over James Madison to start the season, it was Withers who gave a game ball to former coach Butch Davis, who was fired a week before the Tar Heels began practice.
If this was Withers’ last home game as UNC’s coach, Renner made sure he went out a winner.
Renner led the Tar Heels (7-5, 3-5 ACC) on two critical scoring drives in the second half after Duke cut UNC’s lead to two.
Renner watched Duke backup quarterback Anthony Boone enter the game with eight minutes left in the third quarter.
Boone excelled at times, including his 11-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Varner. Boone not only drove the Blue Devils (3-9, 1-7) down the field, but he had given them confidence by accounting for every yard on the drive: passing for 33, running for 21 and catching a halfback pass for 21.
“They scored on a couple of great plays,” Renner said. “We knew we had to keep scoring points.”
Withers put the ball, and the game, in Renner’s hands when UNC took over on its own 30. Renner responded by completing all four of his passes on the drive, including an 18-yard touchdown to Dwight Jones.
“We just got into a rhythm and we’ve been seeking that a lot this year,” Withers said. “We got it at a very important time in the game.”
When UNC’s offense went on the field for its next possession, after Boone was intercepted by Gene Robinson, Renner orchestrated a 91-yard scoring drive to put the game out of reach. That drive ended with Renner finding Jones for an eight-yard pass.
“I’m blessed to be able to throw him the ball, and I know he’s going to come down with it every time,” Renner said of Jones, as the pair each finished with three touchdowns. “I think when we made it 30-21 with that drive we could feel a sense that we had the momentum.”
Throughout this season Withers, a first-time head coach, and Renner, a first-year starter, have both had to learn their jobs quickly. When the game was over, Withers addressed his Tar Heels by telling them a victory in their bowl game would give them just as many wins as they had last year – which Withers claims would be an accomplishment.
That’s when Renner knew he had to express his gratitude to Withers in the locker room. Withers said he wasn’t surprised by the gesture.
“(Bryn) wanted to do it, and I know he was behind it,” Wither said of the game ball. “It was a moment in the locker room where they really wanted to show me appreciation. It was really nice.”

Rivalry
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 09:29 — SurferNow this was a rivalry game. Last game of the reg. season and a piece of hardware at stake. Sure, Dook has not been that good in FB, but the mere thought of losing to them makes me cringe more than in comparison to any other team. That, I guess, is my "rivalry" test. Kudos to Dook, I guess, for making it a game. Boone reminds me a bit of A.J.
7-5, not ideal, but the prospects of a possible 8-5 kinda make it fun.
Well 7-5 was our worst case
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 21:55 — unc098Well 7-5 was our worst case scenario at the beginning of the season. Still not bad considering everything. This was an erratic team at best. There was some good effort however. I really thought we could have taken VT. We just shot ourselves in the foot. State. I just don't know!!!It will take a coaching change to alleviate that problem. Miami was another disappointment. I think we have some good potential for next season, but it all depends on.......the new coach.
Not perfect,
Sat, 11/26/2011 - 23:30 — UNC1998but good enough to win kind easily in the end. That quick drive to go up big was impressive. My TV's nice. That's right.. didn't make it to this one. I gave my 4 tickets to my nephew. He's a big UNC fan, and in the Army. Getting sent to Afghanistan in March. I saw him on Thanksgiving and by the end of the day was thinking he might be the better one to attend. I gave him the lot and told him to take his pals. He took his dad who just recently finished chemo. He's got a good heart, and I'm proud of him.
As for the game. It was nice for the seniors. Every other year it seems to be just right for the seniors. I guess now it's the Military Bowl. That's north, so I won't be going. I'm eager to see who the next coach will be, as that will help me with the decision to renew or not.
I'll get called ugly names
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 00:10 — gvillegatr... By the ABCers, but UNC's next football coach will be Chris Peterson.
Let's break it down. Chapel Hill "ain't" a shabby place to live in. The family has some of the best hospitals around in case their son gets sick again. Chris and Bubba know each other. Butmeire importantly the BCS is washing their hands of it all minus the championship game which means the non qualifiers will NEVER make a decent bowl and get paid. The stars are aligned for CP and UNC. A visit is supposedly already in the works a week from now. Get r done.
CP is hot right now. We have
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 21:48 — unc098CP is hot right now. We have stiff competition from teams out west. I worry about his ability to recruit here but he has so much star power that may not be a problem. Malzahn might be a good fit. UNC is going to have to put up some bucks to get the right person, but that is obvious. There is a bunch of dough sitting there in that new Kenan stadium. Big pressure to pull in someone big. Should be an interesting couple of weeks.
As for the game. Heels did what they should have done, which was to keep the ball out of the hands of Renfree and Co. for most of the game. I am glad to see Gio back in action and having a big game.
Beating Duke should always be simple by just sheer size and talent difference. I have to give them credit for always making it a game though.
I hope you're right..
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 16:14 — UNC1998but with USC's beat down of UCLA yesterday.. CP might be Beverly Hills bound.
50/50
Sun, 11/27/2011 - 20:06 — gvillegatrI always thought (or at least had been hearing) that the ucla job was always going to be Mike Leach's if ucla fired their head coach ?
I don't know how school President's can't see thru all the BS that was the Mike Leach controversy ? The guy fields a good football team and graduates players better than anyone. C'mon to UNC. Not a problem to me.
