No Penn State series for UNC — yet

Bookmark and Share

On his weekly radio show, Penn State coach Joe Paterno referenced playing North Carolina in football in the future, according to the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader.

But UNC associate athletics director Larry Gallo said Friday morning nothing has been scheduled yet.

"We have been talking over the years, and trying to work out something,'' Gallo said. "Certainly, if something like that could be consummated, it could be a very good series."

In the meantime, Gallo continues to look for an opponent to fill out UNC's schedule for next season. That has been tricky, he said, because the Tar Heels would rather play a home game, don't want to schedule a second I-AA team in one season, and would prefer a "one-shot deal" instead of scheduling a home-and-home, especially considering they don't have another open slot to fill until 2012. At this point, he added Thursday, they haven't rule out playing another road game next season.

consummated?? sounds like there's more than football going on between the Holes and PSU.

UNCAlumnus - i remember being a young budding wolfpacker when my dad's good friend took me and some other kids to a tarhole football game; he was always trying to indoctrinate us - he was a big Rams Club booster. That day, UNC-CH was playing Oklahoma and i remember Crum was coaching. I think UNC-CH lost 31-0 that day. I was soooo happy. I was raised right.

Izzy,

I grew up in Durham. My dad would get free Dook tix from work. He'd take me. I would always root for the visiting team. That's because, counter to everyone in my family, I was Tar Heel Born. That is to say that inspite of attempts, truth and right won out with this fellow. Are you in the Wolfpack club? I hear they've done an outstanding job of late raising funds for the athletic program. The Rams Club is successful, but can always use more members and $$

im tarheel born too

but my blood is red, State red.  I even had it color-matched at my local Home Depot.

I remember going to the Dean Dome, not long after it was opened i think, Ive been to Carmichael too, all when i was a middle-schooler.  We were 3 rows from the floor at the Dean Dome, same Rams Club Booster, he was big time.  He actually chose to sit there, i liked it better than courtside, it was the perfect game viewing height.  Anywho, yugoslavia (When they were still a communist satellite of USSR, spelled "Jugoslavia" on their warmups and uniforms) was playing.  I'm thinking - I don't know who these guys are or what Jugoslavia is (and i said it pronouncing the "j" until someone corrected me) but, they're my team.  Go Yugos!!!  People were looking at me like i was crazy.  Then i think they all tought i was like some adopted refugee from Yugoslavia since i was pulling them for so hard.  I never got to go back to another tarhole game for like 10 years.

No i'm not in the Wolfpack Club.  I love sports, love to watch it etc. but there are alot of problems in the world and i feel like "how can i give money to an athletic org when there are abject poverty ghettos not far from me, 39% graduation rates, highest rate of teen-pregnancy per capita than anywhere in the country.  I know that these booster orgs "help" student athletes, but i'd much rather just give to a general scholarship fund.  I'd rather help a kid learn how to read, or do his multiplication tables and let him earn and compete for scholarships.  Maybe i don't know enough how the different sports booster clubs works, but it all seems like while they've helped sports, they also contribute too much to some of the downfall as well.

Your motives are true

and I can't complain or judge you for your choices. I guess it's on of the good things about the USA...we can disagree on college athletics and agree on other things. As for what you choose to "donate" to, I applaud you. I must admit I'm a little small sighted in that vein. I do know at UNC my $ goes directly to help fund scholarships for student athletes. Some of those students may not have gone to college otherwise. The fact is they get to go to a wonderful and highly regarded university. It happens to be the same one I went to. My two girls I hope grow up to go to that same university. Not because it's the home of the Tar Heels, but rather because I know what it did for me. My hope is that it could do the same for them. Have a great day!

This is what we were talking about a couple of weeks ago

right here on this blog. I would love to see UNC play home and home games in Pa, Ok, Tx, Tn, SC, etc.. That's what a lot of people would like to see, I'm sure. The fact of the matter is that home games = $$$. I'm all for UNC making $$$ and fixing up the stadium. I know that's the next big project that the Rams Club will be stumping for. It seems like last year that Williams was saying the DES could use some lovin' too.

Hi
