ACC Now

'No-charge zone' approved in basketball

The "no-charge zone" now is officially destined to be added to the vernacular in college men's basketball.

In an e-mail message Thursday afternoon, NCAA spokeswoman Gail Dent said the NCAA Rules Oversight Committee approved all recommended rules during its Wednesday telephone conference.

The NCAA Basketball Playing Rules Committee had recommended the new rule, which creates a no-charge zone for "help" defenders that extends from the front of the rim to the front of the backboard.

If a help defender has even a part of a foot in that roughly 24-inch area and is involved in contact on a drive, that defender automatically will be called for a defensive foul.

Some coaches and referees had hoped to have an arc drawn on the court to define the no-charge zone the way the NBA has. ACC officiating coordinator John Clougherty was among those who said an arc would have helped referees see the no-charge zone better.

But the Playing Rules Committee was concerned about a four-year waiting period that would have been required to allow schools to have the arcs painted on their courts.

Big Britches

Ms bumnabber,

The writer didn't mention NC state. I hear heels fans say the same things about the preferential treatment given to the freshly scrubbed scholars over at Duke. The loss of the ability to flop will no doubt cause consternation at both Dook and the public school that thinks it is ivy league over in Chapel Hill.

most of us know

and you do as well that ToddBullions is a ncsu fan.

subjective call

This will be a subjective call by refs, and certain players will get the "benefit of the doubt" depending on the jersey they are wearing.

state fan?

It's getting old hearing state fans complain about preferential treatment by ACC refs.  The simple fact is that as a program, ncst doesn't have the players or the coach to compete with the upper tier of the ACC.  It's not the refs holding you guys back.  It's a combination of poor to average talent, questionable coaching, and a shocking acceptance of failure across the board in UNC-R athletics.  That is, unless you consider bass fishing a sport.

I think I saw it somewhere that no athletic team fielded by ncst had a winning record this past year (maybe wrestling, but how many people pay to watch a wresting match that doesn't involve folding chairs and Rey Mysterio Jr.?) I guess All the refs in the conference are on the take from the various conference champions in each sport?

I guess I understand, to some extent.  It almost has to be a conspiracy to achieve that level of failure in every sport.  Surely Lee Fowler is getting kick-backs from fat cat boosters of UNC...

This hurt's Duke big time.

This hurt's Duke big time. They make a living off drawing helpside charges.

Maybe not

You are underestimating K's ability to intimidate by directing his wrath at refs who dare call one of his charges (no pun intended) for an infraction under the new rules.
