ACC Now

NIT picks Davidson, not N.C. State

There won't be a repeat of Davidson's magical NCAA run — the Wildcats did not get an at-large bid despite their 26-7 record — so the NIT was happy to snap up the nation's leading scorer, Stephen Curry. Davidson is seeded sixth in the 32-team field and will face South Carolina at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

N.C. State (16-14) was not chosen for the NIT. Virginia Tech (18-14) and Miami (18-12) did make the field from the ACC.

The Wildcats missed a fourth straight automatic NCAA bid when they were upset by the Southern Conference semifinals. The Arizona Wildcats, a major conference team, made the field despite finishing 19-13 with a first-round loss in the Pac-10 Tournament.

“The picture is very clear that the opportunity to go through the door for us is not as big an opportunity as for the BCS programs,” Davidson coach Bob McKillop told the Associated Press, referring to the Bowl Championship Series football programs. “The margin for error is ever so slight."

His team's seven losses all came to teams with at least 20 wins, including four in the NCAA field: No. 2 seeds Duke and Oklahoma, No. 5 seed Purdue and No. 9 seed Butler. Davidson beat West Virginia, a No. 6 seed.

Curry averaged 28.6 points this season.

Here's the NIT schedule:

Tuesday
Davidson (26-7) at South Carolina (21-9), 7 p.m.
Rhode Island (22-10) at Niagara (26-8), 7 p.m.
George Mason (22-10) at Penn State (22-11), 8 p.m.
UAB (22-11) at Notre Dame (18-14), 9 p.m.
UNLV (21-10) at Kentucky (20-12), 9:30 p.m.
Weber State (21-9) at San Diego State (23-9), 10 p.m.
Nebraska (18-12) at New Mexico (21-11), 10 p.m.
Washington State (17-15) at St. Mary’s, Calif. (25-6), 11 p.m.

Wednesday
Duquesne (21-12) at Virginia Tech (18-14), 7 p.m.
Miami (18-12) at Providence (19-13), 7 p.m.
Illinois State (24-9) at Kansas State (21-11), 8 p.m.
Bowling Green (19-13) at Creighton (26-7), 8 p.m.
Tennessee-Martin (22-9) at Auburn (22-11), 8 p.m.
Jacksonville (18-13) at Florida (23-10), 8 p.m.

Stop bringing up Sendek and understand NCSU Sports

Let me start by saying that I am a Sendek fan BUT he was NOT a good fit for NCSU. He is solid coach and did well while he was here. HOWEVER, contrary to what most believe the job isn't just about Win/loss columns. Alumni & boosters give a tremendous amount of money and do expect a little connection with the program. Bottom line is this is a business (like or not) and success is also measured by how well your coach fits in to the school, fan base, boosters etc.

Herb never really connected with the program no matter how great of a coach he was/is. That doesn't mean we are crazy or a looney fringe. It simply means we require the following in a coach: Passion, education, understanding of tradition (NOT just past winning records?), success in all areas. Herb hit the success and education mark well. Truth is any major program requires a good connection with the alumni base/boosters and fans. I wish him well at ASU and I hope they go a long way in the tournament.

Lowe has the passion, tradition & connection but lacks in other areas. We all wish him success, especially since he may be willing to be a "long term" coach, but he does have some obvious coaching flaws. If we do have to move on and do another search, hopefully we will bring in a great coach/passion.

Money talks these days and so does an AD. Fowler seems to be subpar, so this will continue to be a problem regardless of the coach. It is easy for others (not fans/alumni) to quickly judge the Sendek ordeal but for those who know, it was clearly about the uncomfortable connection between Herb & the fans/boosters/alumni.

Final summary for me: Sendek was solid but never connected, Lowe is inconsistent and suffers from no college experience, AD was lucky with O'Brian but struggles with all other athletic programs. Change from the very top (Athletics & School) is really what will drive success eventually.

Got what you deserved is right!

You can say what you like, but the fact is that ASU with Herb Sendek have been in a position all season to go dancing and NCSU has not. Comparing your team & its tradition to UNC & Duke and saying you ought to be an "elite" program is a bunch of bull. Tradition like that takes time and consistency and you had that in the 1970's with David Thompson dueling with UCLA. No one since has continued that tradition that I guess many of your fans feel you deserve (compared to Duke and UNC). The brutal reality is that the landscape in the ACC has changed now and there are 12 teams beating up on each other. It will be a grind every season and it will not build any consistency to change coaches ever other year! Decent coaches in this environment could bite the dust becuase of one or two seasons.  In Sendek, you were competitive in just about every ACC tournament during his tenure and you cut him lose because it wasn't "good enough!" Watch what he is building at ASU and you will be kicking yourself for a long time!

Amen

I graduated NCSU in the '80s and nothing has changed - it seems that being competitive is not good enough - we need to be able to "rub faces in it".  Sendek was successful but didn't overcome Duke and Carolina and worse, wouldn't rub anybody's face in our success. He got more grief for winning than Chuck Amato got for losing until his last season, why? Because Amato talked the game NCSU alumni wanted to hear.

Winning is its own reward and our fan base needs to understand and appreciate it.  What Valvano did was lightning out of left field - judging the future by the standard of 1983 is foolishness.

Be nice to "Coach" Fowler

It wouldn't be very nice to fire "Coach" Lee Fowler. Who else in the universe would pay $300,000+ for his services, especially in this economy? Answer: No One.

Once Lee Fowler is gone,

NC State's fortunes will improve.  Uncle Jed is an albatross who the University cannot afford to keep if they wish to be competitive in athletics.

How did HERB finish up this year?

Just wondering how the guy who couldn't coach did out west.

Herb once again lost against

Herb once again lost against an inferior team in the PAC-10 Championship.  Next year without his star players, he'll be back chopping wood, hoping for a bubble berth.

More of the same

ASU had a 15 point lead at halftime against USC and ended up losing by 3. Sound familiar? I was watching the game with my brother-in-law and predicted the outcome at the start of the second half. We've seen it all before.

I have nothing against Herb and would love to see him do well in the NCAA tourney (in spite of the feeding frenzy that would result in this blog). But to say that State would be better today if Herb was still in Raleigh? I don't buy it.

NC state "fans" amuse me

Guy's had three years. Three years.

Give him a chance. You have a good man who is a pretty good coach and got more out of thius team than Costner's sorry attitude should have allowed.

Bob McKillop was 4-24 his first season at Davidson and didn't have a winning season til his 4th year. I'm pretty glad Davidson didn't have the itchy trigger finger of an NCSU "fan."

How exactly are you going to recruit and get better if you fire coaches after three years?

Ah, the vagaries of a program whose fans thought repeated sweet 16 appearances just weren't enough.

How's Arizona State doing this season?

Agreed

This nashing of teeth every time something doesn't go our way is counterproductive. Frustration is definitely understandable, as is doubt that Sid is ultimately the right guy for the job. But the idea that changing coaches at this point will solve all problems is ridiculous.

Costner and Fells did not deliver to their full potential this year. This is the main reason State was not at least a bubble team. Injuries may (or may not) explain Courtney's lack of production. Costner's funk has lasted for two years, so it cannot be written off to anything that happened this year. As it stands, State was left out of the post-season picture and has no one to blame but themselves.

In the meantime, several young players have developed very nicely this year and there appears to be help in the incoming class. Sid has shown that he can coach, develop players and recruit, although I would like to see more emphasis and success in pulling in more bigs. Next year, however, does not look bad to me.

Davidson doesn't have tradition of NC State

davidson hiring bob mckillop is not comparable to state hiring lowe. State has a long rich tradition of ncaa tournament appearances..and two national championships. Davidson has a nice bball history..but state is an established top 20 type program thaat should have a name brand coach and not have to be patient with missing two ncaa tournaments...we aren't south carolina or georgia... Your "be patient" offer might work there..but not at an established program like state.

established??

UNC and Duke are establihsed.

in '83 your team was average BUT made a remarkable run through the ACC and NCAA tourney and won it all.  In '74 you were established but that was so long ago, I was just being conceieved!

you are what is wrong with most ncsu fans.  you feel a sense of entitlement, yet it has been three and a half decades since you were a consistent threat to do anything.  feel that way all you want, just don't think I am going to sit idly by and allow you to!

Agree

In fact, NC State doesn't have the tradition of NC State. I would have to say that, in fact, they are "established", all right, they just aren't established where they want to be or where some even think they are. Case in point, if "they are an established top 20 program", shouldn't they be in the NCAA tourney?

Absolutely esttablished

if you rank the top 25 programs of all-time..nc state is easily one of the top 15... Guarantee you that state is one of the top 20 winningest programs of all-time..a/D STATE HAS 10 ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS..3rd behingunc and duke.

Good try, but not true

I will take that guarantee, looks like they are 24, not 15 or top 20. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Top_25_all_time_winningest_basketball_programs, But congrats, I am suprised that they are now even that high.

Unfortunately, we're just

Unfortunately, we're just established in losing.  Davidson is far more "established" in their league and conference than NC State.

Davidson was assured of a NIT bid

They were the regular season champs of the So Con. All regular season champs who do not get a bid to the NCAA get an automatic bid to the NIT.

no more david thompson or jim valvano

The tradition of nc state basketball is dead. We deserve all the jokes from unc and duke fans. We are now on the same level as nebraska or ole miss basketball- except we are in the acc and have a beautiful amazing arena. We are to acc basketball what duke is to acc football...except duke hired a new football coach to right the ship. Not old nc state...just keep on losing..put up with the same old excuses "we are on the right track and are about to turn the corner" while we constantly are being overshadowed by duke and unc...and keep slipping further and further and further away from the days of thompson and valvano. Very sad.

Got what we deserved : not the players fault

Is Lee Fowler the only man on earth that thinks Sidney Lowe deserves to keep his job? He who hesitates loses. And you have waited too long Lee, as usual. It is time for change at the top. What kid would commit to this J. D. Jakes look alike in a tomato suit? And what coach wants to step into a program that is content with mediocre?
