ESPN's taking over the BCS.
The Disney-owned cable company will have the broadcast rights to all five Bowl Championship Series bowl games starting in 2011, ending the awkward marriage between college football and Fox.
ESPN will pay $125 million annually, between Jan. 2011 (the '10 season) and Jan. 2014, for the Orange, Sugar, Fiesta and BCS Championship Game, according to USA Today. ABC, also owned by Disney, owns the rights to the Rose Bowl, the fifth BCS game, and ESPN will have the option to move that game to cable, according to USA Today.
Fox, which took over the BCS bowls in 2006 despite not broadcasting any regular-season college games, had been paying $82.5 million annually for its four BCS games.
Grouping the broadcast rights with one television partner might be the first step in changing the postseason format. ABC's contract with the Rose Bowl, worth $37.5 annually, runs through Jan. '14.
That means the earliest any change — a Plus-One or an eight-team playoff — could potentially take place is for the '14 season — six BCS computer scrambles from today.
Pro-playoff college football fans (everyone?) have an advocate in President-elect Barack Obama who tackled the subject on "60 Minutes."
It's one thing to win the White House, another to take the money out of college presidents' pockets. ACC commissioner, and current BCS coordinator, John Swofford has already volleyed Obama's public plea back to Washington.

From each according to his ability, to each based upon his need
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 13:05 — ICareDeeplySince when did Obama become an advocate for performance being any criteria for anything? Placement with the BCS or any given league should be based upon NEED! The fact is, the Wolfpack simply cannot get the same caliber of players as UNC and Duke. Hence, they lose, and thus find recruiting even harder. Hardly a fair, equitable or Progressive system. Players should be redistributed based upon need. If it's good enough for the good ol' USA, then it's good enough for the ACC I say. Let them eat barbeque.
then it must be...
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 14:03 — izzykareemparticularly galling that State beat UNCCH in football last year. Such a worthless little nobody school with all those measely recruits (that UNCCH recruited) rises up and dominates the Holes.
And if you are talking about Basketball then be careful, Sidney's got recruits coming in now, we're trying to weed-out the mess that was left, no need to redistribute.
One game does not merit domination....
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 15:04 — UNCAlumnusWhy not look at the overall series record to see that.
Touche
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 17:01 — wjcampUNC leads the all time series 63-28-6. That is closer to domination than winning the last game.
As screwed up as the BCS is...
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 12:30 — JPDOhiowatch what happens if you get politicians involved. One thing you can count on, if a politician acts to "solve" a problem, the problem gets worse or is replaced by a bigger problem. Those of us living in the real world are seeing examples of this daily.
Obama has enough on his plate
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 12:13 — UNCAlumnusWhy not let college deal with college football. Why must congress mess with baseball? Why must a senator try to scuffle with the NFL? The government must concentrate on it' own work. I guess I didn't realize what he meant when his signs were saying "Tme for Change".
Time for Change
Tue, 11/18/2008 - 13:24 — gvillegatrno one did or does know what "time for change" means UNCAlum.
Swofford is a dweeb
