The NCAA is investigating two University of North Carolina football players in connection with possible improper involvement with sports agents, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.
UNC athletic director Dick Baddour confirmed Thursday that the NCAA “had been to Chapel Hill to speak with some of our student-athletes” but declined to provide further details.
“We told [the NCAA] we will give them our total cooperation and maintain the confidence of their visit and review,” Baddour said Thursday.
Baddour said he had spoken at length with NCAA representatives about the issue.
“I’m going to do exactly what they ask me to do,” Baddour said. “We work hard in doing things the right way.”
NCAA representatives met with the players on Monday and Tuesday, according to a source.
The NCAA allows players to have contact with sports agents after their junior season and UNC even hosts an on-campus event for agents, but the players cannot accept gifts, money or any improper benefits.
Players are also prohibited from making any type of commitment, informal or otherwise, to sign with an agent.
The NCAA dealt with two high-profile cases last year, one each in football and men’s basketball, concerning an inappropriate relationship with an agent, or potential representative.
Oklahoma State receiver Dez Bryant was suspended for 10 games in the 2009 college football season after he admitted he lied to NCAA officials about the details of his relationship with former NFL player Deion Sanders.
Kentucky guard John Wall was suspended two college basketball games by the NCAA for an improper relationship with an agent while he was a high school player in Raleigh.
The NCAA made waves in the college football world earlier this month with its punishment of the University of Southern California’s football team.
The NCAA banned the Trojans, winner of two national titles in he past decade, from the postseason in 2010 and 2011 and docked the program 30 scholarships over the next three years after it learned former star Reggie Bush received improper benefits from an agent while he was a student-athlete in 2004 and 2005.
UNC has a built a reputation as one of the top athletic departments, both on and off the field, under Baddour, who has been the AD since 1997.
"We try to do things in a first-class way," Baddour said. "In this case, we have to withhold some information. That's not typically how we would do things, we always want to be transparent."
Baddour declined to comment on the scope or severity of the NCAA’s interest in UNC’s athletic department.
“I would encourage people not to jump to any conclusions,” Baddour said. “We need to see what their interests are and how we can respond and cooperate.”
Former Miami athletic director Paul Dee is the chairman of the NCAA’s infractions committee. Dee hired UNC football coach Butch Davis as head football coach at Miami in 1995 and the two worked together for six years before Davis left for the NFL in 2001.

best case scenario
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 22:03 — gvillegatrthey just need to "Dez Bryant" Marvin Austin. go ahead and boot his butt. get rid of him. adios, senor.
this guy has acted about as brazen as any athlete we've known about in quite some time. I swear his father must've played for one of Jimmy Johnson's or Dennis Erickson's teams.
You simply have to know better than to tweet your trips to Miami and riding around in Balmer's car. c'mon.
This thing is starting to blow up.....
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 15:21 — UNC1998First UNC, then S. Carolina, now Florida. Hopefully it will be just players and not schools, but the best would have obviously be if none of this ever happened. I dare say if the NCAA looks at almost every school in the country they'd find something wrong concerning players and agents. Again, I'm truly saddened by the news at UNC. If it turns out it's just a couple of players I say dismiss them. This would be the best choice. Of course, Austin could claim his "uncle" pays for the trips and stuff. That's worked before at a school a little south of here.
Violations.
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 16:02 — JPDOhio"... if the NCAA looks at almost every school in the country they'd find something wrong concerning players and agents." This is very true.
YSU's Athletic Director told me once that they constantly remind their players about NCAA rules and the importance of complying with them. "Remind" is too soft a word. They pound it into them. The problem is that some kids just don't listen. And, with close to a hundred on a football team and hundreds of student-athletes at any given school, the coaching and support staff can't possibly monitor them 24/7. So, you are going to get some violations no matter what you do.
I don't know how this investigation is going to turn out. If the athlete's did something stupid without the knowledge of the coaching staff (which sounds like the most likely scenario), then the athlete should bear the brunt of the punishment. I would think that getting this resolved before the start of the season would be in UNC's best interest, regardless of the impact on the opening game of the season.
My hope is that UNC....
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 19:25 — UNC1998will do it's own investigation. If that turns up players in violation of the rules UNC should remove them from the team and void their scholarships. That move alone would help to minimize any potential penalty from the NCAA. As of right now Austin seems to be at the center of the entire investigation. I've also read that W. Saunders down at S. Carolina is potentially in a little hot water with the NCAA. It appears that Austin and Saunders were "close", and shared any potential ideas and offers from prospective agents.
One thing I'm learning..
Sat, 07/17/2010 - 22:59 — UNC1998Is to keep my mouth shut and let rivals say what they like. As for UNC, I'm just sad. I even had trouble sleeping....That's a problem, and it's my problem. I just hope the involved players got what they wanted, because I have a feeling their names may be stricken from the record.
So far
Fri, 07/16/2010 - 12:33 — Heels20I've heard that Marvin Austin and one other un-named player are being investigated for illegal contact with agents. The potentially alleged incidents occurred after the season ended, so it doesn't look like any wins would be vacated. The stuff sounds pretty minor and is likely to blow over (even though we all know Marv is probably guilty).
Just when
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 12:33 — unc098This team was ripening this happens. I've been out of the country so I am out of the loop. Hopefully it won't be to bad. First game suspension would be a major bummer.
Doubt it
Sun, 07/18/2010 - 16:39 — Heels20It's unlikely that all of this will be sorted out by the LSU game. We can only hope that nothing will happen that could possibly cause us to vacate wins.
timing
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 12:08 — SurferAgree that it likely will not be sorted out by the first game. But if eligibility is in question for a player or players, I wonder if they would be allowed to play at all until that is determined.

Settled
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 15:00 — YAR8packRandom question: If these guys are guilty of taking gifts and cash from agents, wouldn't unc want this to be settled before the 1st game? Wouldn't it be more harmful to the program if these two guys are found culpable after the season has started and they're still on the roster vs being found guilty during the season. Wouldn't there then be violations to the team since they're still on the team? I know if these were ECU or NC State players involved, I would certainly want the players to be gone instead of the team getting violations for having kept them on the roster.
I'm not gonna get into who has or has not done what. Still a lot of facts to be found with this stuff.
You're absolutely right
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 16:36 — Heels20If things were not settled before the beginning of the season, then the team is taking a risk by allowing them to participate. UNC could possibly face issues of having to vacate wins if ineligible players took part in those games.
Joe Schad discussed this issue on 99.9 a few days ago. He seems to think Butch would roll the dice and play Marvin (and any other players in question) if the investigation is still in progress on September 4.
Well...
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 16:55 — YAR8packMy unc fan, friend just emailed this to me: http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Sources-Marvin-Austin-expected-to-be-suspended-by-NCAA.html
I'm rather nervous about whom the alleged other two ACC schools involved are.
Hm
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 17:15 — Heels20I never want to pay too much attention when I don't know who the "source" is, but it wouldn't surprise me if this stuff is true. As I said before, Butch will probably roll the dice if things are still like this right before the LSU game, but if he knows of any hard evidence that would likely lead to Austin losing his eligibility, then I believe he would suspend him until things are cleared up.
Digging
Tue, 07/20/2010 - 13:26 — SurferSurely, Coach Davis is digging for any evidence, one way or the other, for him to make a decision long before the first game. He should not take a risk with the team, or roll the dice, as you say. Ideally, as noted, would be some resolution before Sept. 4, but we'll see.
Yeah...
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 11:48 — willncsu34It would suck if you had to vacate all those wins BD has over the NCSU. Oh, wait...
Re: Yeah...
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 12:23 — Heels20State's got a lot to look forward to this season. You'll lose to us by 40, the win will get taken away, and then you can make T-shirts that say "Four in a Row!"
Maybe...
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 14:20 — willncsu34We can make a joint shirt with Virginia.
Wins
Mon, 07/19/2010 - 12:12 — SurferAgree, too bad for State. Vacating all of the UNC wins, would still not give NCSU a winning record.
Whatever
Fri, 07/16/2010 - 09:55 — willncsu34Nothing is going to happen. Slap on the wrist at best.
i'll say this
Thu, 07/15/2010 - 23:14 — gvillegatrIf it is determined that a few guys have broken some rules concerning an agent, sit 'em or boot 'em. fair is fair.
sit them or boot them?
Fri, 07/16/2010 - 02:36 — izzykareemIf something really and actually happened (we know it goes on, its just whether the NCAA is ready to do anything about it) "sit'em or boot'em" is gonna be what you wish would happen.
Nothing

Nevermind.
