N.C. State-UAB tipoff set

Bookmark and Share

The game time for N.C. State's second-round match-up at UAB has been set for 5 p.m. EST on Saturday. The game will be televised on ESPNU. The sixth-seeded Wolfpack advanced to play in Birmingham after beating third-seeded South Florida on the road on Tuesday.

Fourth-seeded North Carolina, which advanced to the second round by beating William and Mary, will play at Mississippi State at noon on Saturday; that game will be televised on ESPN.

If both local teams win, they would match up in the third round.

Re: Off Subject

Of course making the NCAA was and is always a goal. But there is a difference between goals and expectations. All of the expectations were for this team to stink. So any modicum of success makes it an acceptable year. Next year's team will have significantly higher expectations and a similarly higher bar to be an acceptable year.

Off Subject

This is kind of off topic, but I am interested in the State fan's (JPD, mad-can we get a goaltending-max, et.al.) view. A very reliable source told me that last night on Sid's radio show he said; 1) State tied for 9th in the ACC and 2) This team has far exceeded expectations for this year.

While the Pack has played great of late, I was just thinking that making the NCAA might kind of always be a goal?

In Short

With what State has coming back next year, especially Tracy Smith, and the recruiting class coming in, the NCAAs should be a very realistic goal for next season.  If State doesn't even get on the bubble, then we've got some major issues.

Back in the day

(at least since they started letting at-large invites), it was always expected that we'd get to the NCAA. At least until Jimmy V was skewered. Since then we've had to suffer the purgatory of the Les Robinson Invitational game in the ACC tourney, and the snooze that was Herb Sendek.

Of course, back when only the tournament winner went, nobody in the ACC could expect to go every year. Here is a story about that:

Goals

I've got to agree with the other poster (whose name I didn't get before the page turned). With only one proven starter returning and a lot of freshmen and sophs contributing, the expectations had to be low.

Still, in the area of coulda, woulda shoulda, if Fla doesn't hit the 60 footer, if they don't let the AZ guard drive the length of the court to win at the buzzer and they beat a vulnerable UNC team just once, then they are 23-12 and looking much better. Other than the very bad losing stretch in ACC play, the Pack wasn't bad and had some quality wins.

So I'm feeling pretty good right now because this season was a building year. And the culmination of the season is showing some pretty good dividends that bode well for next year. Based on how this team is finishing, I do believe that qualifying for the NCAA tournament should be the goal next year.
