N.C. State football player J.R. Sweezy has been suspended indefinitely after getting into a late-night fight with a shuttle bus driver in Mooresville last Thursday.
Sweezy, 20, was charged with misdemeanor assault and misdemeanor larceny, according to the Mooresville Police Department, after getting into a physical altercation with David Scott Magnuson and Nicholas Kaplan at 2:37 a.m. on March 18.
Sweezy, listed as 6-5 and 293 pounds on the N.C. State roster, was asked to leave the shuttle bus by Magnuson, the driver, for acting "loud and obnoxious," according to a press release by the Mooresville Police Department.
As he exited the bus, Sweezy knocked over Magnuson's tip jar, according to the release. Magnuson and Kaplan left the bus to confront Sweezy and the altercation turned physical. According to a New 14 Carolina report, Magnuson is 65 years old.
Underage drinking was a factor in the altercation, according to a Mooresville Police spokeswoman.
Sweezy, a third-year junior from Mooresville, started one game at defensive tackle with 26 tackles and three sacks in 2009 and is considered to be in line for a starting job for the 2010 season.
N.C. State spokeswoman Annabelle Vaughn confirmed Sunday that Wolfpack coach Tom O'Brien suspended Sweezy indefinitely.

Mon, 03/22/2010 - 14:42 — JPDOhioI don't know what happened on the bus, but I do know this. Sweezy needs to grow up and start acting like (1) an adult and (2) a player who has been there before. The way to avoid trouble is to avoid situations that can escalate into a problem.
The kid apparently has a self-control problem. His antics on the field, whether they rise to the level of a penalty or not, demonstrate this. I remember the situation sclark is referring to and I agree, no penalty should have been called. But JR still gave the ref the opportunity to make the call. He made a good play. He should act like he is supposed to make good plays by getting up and getting back to work without the histrionics.
I also agree that no double standard applies here. Sweezy is clearly in the mix on a unit that is unsettled at this moment. No way is this suspension insignificant.
Sweezy's actions... < many others....
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 14:07 — sclarkYar8- Sweezy's actions after the sack in the Wake game did NOT warrant a "taunting" or "unsportsmanlike conduct" penalty. I saw MUCH worse this year go UNcalled. The time that unx's WR (little) stood OVER the top of an NCSU DB actually TAUNTING HIM after hurting his knee went withOUT a whistle. That's just one example, but a damn good one. JR may have shown some moments of being "juvenile", but CELEBRATING (by yourself, AWAY from the action) after a sack was NOT one of them.
I hate to be the bearer of REALITY, but.... it is what it is.
JR Sweezy will be back on this team and contributing if and when TOB deems that necessary... and I do trust TOB to make the right call.
Whatever happened to INNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY???
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 13:59 — sclarksome of you sound like Jessie and Sharpton chiming in on the duke LAX "rape" case....
how'd that turn out???
SIT DOWN, and let the facts rule the day.... all of you ready to convict the young man don't even know if he was DEFENDING himself... the story does speak to TWO people LEAVING the bus to "confront" JR.
Once he's exhonerated, a few of you need to step back in here and dine on that crow.
No Surprise
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 10:10 — YAR8packAfter seeing JR Sweezy display his gross amount of immaturity from taunts and chest pounding idiocy during a couple games for the Pack this past football season, this really comes as no surprise. How he didn't get more than 1 personal foul called on him for taunting is beyond me. The guy didn't get "it" after TOB sat him down for the rest of the Wake Forest vs NC State game and couple more games after making a moron out of himself and his team. Apparently Sweezy just can't realize that the world of "Varsity Blues" doesn't exist.
Good for the staff of NCSU. I don't wish any longstanding ill-will to JR Sweezy, but I think all of us can agree that the kid needs to grow up and realize there's such a thing called situational awareness, aka not making an ass of yourself and the university you're supposed to represent in public.
Gaytr, you may want to read the part in the post that states JR Sweezy "is considered to be in line for a starting job for the 2010 season" before making another uninformed comment.
OK GO STATE!!!
What a shame
Mon, 03/22/2010 - 09:40 — mad_maxWe want players who understand the respect and discipline required to play under TOB. I won't be able to root for this guy in the future...even if he is sacking UNC's QB.
Gatr,
I understand you were responding to a black helicopter comment, but as the article says, Sweezey was in line to compete for a starting role this year. I'm glad he is being disciplined, and I have faith in TOB that even if RJOW committed an act like this (not that he ever would) then he would be suspended too.
...double standard...
Sun, 03/21/2010 - 20:56 — wjolly..Glad that coach Tom made the call quickly....Of course, had he played for some un-named other team..nothing would have been done and it most likely wouldn't haven't made this newspaper...
w-get your jollies!!!

doule standard
Sun, 03/21/2010 - 22:58 — gvillegatryour title was dead on. If this guy actually mattered to ncsu football, he would still be on the team and running his ass off all spiring and summer.
no. this guy was a nobody and was "made an example of."
like you said. DOUBLE STANDARD.
