CHARLESTON, S.C. -- N.C. State moved into the winners bracket of the Charleston Classic with a convincing 85-65 victory against East Carolina on Thursday at Carolina First Arena.

The Wolfpack (2-0) plays the winner of Thursday's late game between Charlotte and George Mason at 8:30 p.m. Friday. The Pirates (2-1) will face the 49ers-Patriots loser at 6 p.m.

Earlier in the day, Wofford and Georgetown advanced to the winners bracket with convincing victories. The Terriers beat USC Upstate 79-61 and the Hoyas had little trouble with Coastal Carolina 80-61.

The only unsettling news for the Wolfpack was the continuing soreness in center Tracy Smith's left knee. Smith started but only played six minutes.

N.C. State was led by freshman guard Lorenzo Brown's 16 points. Double-doubles were turned in by guard Ryan Harrow (11 points, 10 asissts) and center DeShawn Painter (12 points, 10 rebounds). East Carolina got 11 points from Corvonn Gaines.

Earlier

N.C. State's Wolfpack leads East Carolina 37-29 at halftime of their opening round game at the Charleston Classic at Carolina First Arena.

The Wolfpack and Pirates traded the lead several times midway through the half until N.C. State went on an 8-2 run.

N.C. State had balanced scoring, with Scott Wood, Lorenzo Brown and C.J. Williams each scoring six points. East Carolina was led at the half by Chad Wynn, who scored six points.

The Wolfpack dominated the boards, outrebounding East Carolina 23-18. N.C. State also had 10 offensive rebounds and scored 14 points in the paint. It was a sloppy half, with the Pirates turning the ball over 13 times and N.C. State losing it nine times.

The winner of the game will play the winner of tonight's Charlotte-George Mason game at 8:30 Friday. The losers play at 6 p.m. Friday.

So far so good

I was only been able listen to the ECU game, but here's what I got out of what I heard.

  1. Ryan Harrow will be the steadiest point guard State has this year. To the extent that Javi contributes, it will be at the 2 and spelling Ryan at point. I am concerned about Ryan's ability to withstand the physical beating he will take in ACC play, so it is important that Javi play consistently and well. That hasn't happened so far, except in the second half of the Tenn Tech game.
  2. Scott Wood will still be in the top 3 in minutes when the season is over. He scored well yesterday and his all-around game seems just as solid as ever.
  3. A 20 point win without much contribution from Tracy, Javi or CJ Leslie is impressive, even if it happened against ECU. State teams in recent years would have struggled to win a game like this.
  4. I can remember a pick-up game I played at the local Y a hundred or so years ago where 3 of us ran fast-breaks and won all night. That's what the Pack sounded like in the second half last night. The other two guys on our team at the time tried all night (unsuccessfully) to slow us down and later said "We would hate to coach you guys". Unlike my pick-up game teammates, I am guessing Sid really likes coaching these guys.
  5. DeShawn Painter came up huge when Tracy had to leave the game. Hopefully, Tracy's injury is not serious and he will be back soon. Meanwhile, it will be good to see if DeShawn can consistently deliver like he did against ECU.
  6. Richard Howell, along with Scott Wood, could be the unsung heroes on this team. They are steady and productive, but likely won't get the hype that Tracy and the freshmen should get as time goes on.

Looking forward to the George Mason game tonight. Not sure how good they are, but I am expecting it to be a good test for the Pack.

The freshmen

Are all really good.  I will be shocked if we do not make the tournament and finish top 4 in the ACC.  I went to the Tennessee Tech game and watched the game last night in a bar.  Brown looks like our most complete player right now.  Harrow has the most upside.  This may be the most talented State team I have seen in a really long time.

Which one?

ESPNU has NCSU's game against GMU listed as taking place at 6:00 pm while the N&O says the game is at 8:30 pm. Which one is correct? Just want to know so I can setup my DVR.

OK GO WOLFPACK!!!

6 P.M.

Based on several sources on the internet, including the Charleston Classic web site and Yahoo Sports.

Homework

Thanks for doing my homework, JPD. Been a wild but great day at work, and I haven't had much time to surf the net.

Also, that's a great breakdown of last night's game.

You should try justinTV.com when you can't pick up the games on a "regular" broadcast station. Sometimes that site streams games you midwestern-placed folks might not be able to get.

From what I've read, George Mason is a solid team that will test NCSU's young unit. Maybe Leslie can get going tonight. Harrow certainly impresses me. The kid just needs to put on some weight.

OK GO WOLFPACK!!!

Thanks for the tip. I can get most of the games up here either on TV or the internet. But the random ones on the regional networks (like FSN South and MASN) are a problem. No sweat on tonight though.
