N.C. State football loses four players

Bookmark and Share

Four players who were expected to be on N.C. State’s 2009 football roster will not be with the team, the school announced Thursday.

Coach Tom O’Brien announced that sophomore cornerback Dominique Ellis is transferring. Three players who signed with N.C. State in February – Tyson Chandler, Raynard Randolph and Bryan Underwood – will not enroll in the fall.

Ellis played in all 13 games last season. Although he played mainly on special teams, he was considered a promising prospect.

"I appreciate everything the N.C. State coaching staff has done for me and taught me," Ellis said in a statement released by the school. "I learned a lot from them, but at this time, I think that for personal reasons, it’s in my best interest to continue my career at another school."

Chandler is an offensive lineman who was one of the top prospects in New Jersey. Underwood was supposed to add speed at wide receiver, and Randolph plays defensive tackle.

Opportunity to pick up other recruits for next year

To bad for guys that did not qualify and best of luck for Ellis. Other recruits out there for replacements - Saw kid from Texas at NCState camp this summeer last name Macon looked great at DL skill level tremendous for about a 6'1 270 guy. Saw Coach K. Willis taking a lot of interest in him and gave him MVP DL award at camp

No need to panic

Having a handful of recruits fail to qualify is not that unusual. Three sounds about normal to me. It is when the numbers increase and stay high every year that you start to wonder.

Losing Ellis hurts because the secondary was already thin, but it is interesting because you would think he would have a good shot at a lot of playing time. Whatever his reasons, I hope he finds success wherever he ends up.

Hopefully the coach won't get fired for a bad season

That seems to be the way things work in the Wolfpack Club. Maybe he'll get a pass this year!

It does?

I think it's actually the opposite. Amato got fired after a bad season, but that was pretty much a no-brainer IMO. It seems to me that State is pretty patient with its coaches. Many would point to Sid Lowe as the best example of this. My best example would be George Tarantini, whose men's soccer team has mostly been a doormat in the ACC in recent years.

That did what?

We didn't over sign players.

Ellis really hurts. Two

Ellis really hurts. Two starters in a week? Not good for the high expectations. P.S. I am a State fan so don't jump me for the comments

I thought Carolina was the

I thought Carolina was the only school that did this.

Only School?

Syracuse has dismissed 16 this year.  That's just football!  (so far!!)

Dismissed?

Or just bolting that Keystone Kops program like cockroaches when the lights come on.

No worries though. Greg Paulus is coming to save the day!

Did what?

What did State do? We had a player transfer (who knows why?) and we had three that didn't enroll (again, who knows why?) What did the school or coaches "do" in this?

Butch Davis offered scholarships to something like 29 players, knowing only 25 (or however many) could enroll. In Butch's case, something HAD to give. He could not keep all his recruits even if he wanted to. He had to either lose CURRENT players, or tell some recruits they weren't welcome.

TOB didn't overrecruit like Butch. He could have enrolled everybody if they all qualified and wanted to be here. So something else happened with these guys.

Re: Did what?

Butch knew there was a good chance that some of the recruits couldn't enroll.  Unfortunately, it looks like he took Cam Sexton's scholarship away since he's mysteriously transferring before his senior year.  Jay Wooten also probably lost his scholarship because a walk-on is starting over him.

TOB is usually pretty quiet about details.  Levin Neal and Thomas Barnes both transferred when they both got good playing time.  Ellis probably was dismissed for academic or disciplinary reasons, and the recruits probably didn't qualify.  No guarantee on that, I'm just guessing.
