A dismal shooting night for Tracy Smith? Maybe. He was 2-for-16 from the floor before he hit the two biggest shots of the night.
With Smith hitting the winning basket with 1.3 seconds to go, N.C. State remained undefeated at 4-0 with a 60-58 win over Auburn.
"I was just praying I made it," Smith said. "I saw the rebound come off, and I went and got it, and I shot the shot and it went in."
Smith also converted a three-point play with 50 seconds to go to put N.C. State in the lead for the first time since Auburn took a 51-49 lead with 4:01 to go. Javi Gonzalez made only one of two free throws shortly after, leaving the door open for Auburn's Brendon Knox to tie the score at 58 with 12.4 seconds left.
After Julius Mays missed a 3-pointer from the corner, Smith grabbed the rebound in the lane and scored off the glass for the win, finishing with 11 points on the night.
"I thought it was a great effort on our guys' part, really hanging in there mentally and fighting and battling down to that last basket by Tracy, just determined to get that loose ball," N.C. State coach Sidney Lowe said.
Smith's 15 rebounds were a career high, seven of them offensive rebounds on his own misses.
"I can't remember a night like that," Smith said.
The Wolfpack led Auburn 26-25 at the half, led by nine points from Horner, who was on the floor for only 10 minutes because of foul trouble. A Scott Wood putback late in the half put State back in the lead after a 14-4 Auburn run got the Tigers back into the game.
In the second half, N.C. State was up 39-28 when Auburn ripped off a 21-4 run. State was 1-for-17 from the field during that stretch while Auburn hit four 3-pointers in a row.
Down six, Gonzalez and Mays hit back-to-back 3-pointers to tie the score at 49 with four minutes to go, the entire State bench standing and chanting ‘defense’ in a spontaneous show of team spirit.
With the score tied 51-51, Smith missed the front end of a bonus and Auburn's Frankie Sullivan responded with a 3-pointer at the other end, only to be answered by Dennis Horner, who led the Pack with 16 points.
With the win over Auburn, N.C. State captured the Glenn Wilkes Classic title as the only one of the 10 teams with a 4-0 record. A loss would have put N.C. State, Auburn, IUPUI and Central Florida in a four-way tie for the championship at 3-1. Rhode Island won in 2007 and Utah in 2008.
Smith was named the tournament’s outstanding player and Horner was named to the all-tournament team.

Mon, 11/23/2009 - 19:48 — mad_maxThis is a very good sign for the Pack. I know their 4-0 record doesn't mean a damn thing, and comparing them to UNC right now is indeed laughable, but this is exactly the kind of game that we saw State unable to win in the past couple years. It's just nice to see them pull through in the clutch and steal one away. I'm excited for every season, even when we know we are going to be terrible, but this year I've really got some hope for State. I think .500 in the league is a great goal for this team right now, and who knows, they may be able to get there. Just continue to get better and develop the puppies. GO PACK!
GUESS WHAT?
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 12:26 — prb24lifeNC STATE= UNDEFEATED
CAROLINA= OVERRATED
About time
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 13:51 — SurferFinally, some laughable material.
Everybody knows UNC is/was/probably will be ranked too high.
Congrats to State on such a monumental acheivement. They should quit now, while they are ahead.
Haha
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 12:36 — Heels20Holy loser
GO PACK
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 12:24 — prb24lifeWell, this one is for all you State haters. The Pack is one thing Carolina is not:
UNDEFEATED....
One more thing
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 13:47 — SurferYou also left out "non-rated".
last two games
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 10:44 — sbas2i paid the eight ninety five and watched State play Austin Peay and Auburn. it appeared to me that whenever State got a pretty good lead their intensity level went way down. this allowed Austin Peay to get back into the game, and Auburn to actually take the lead with about six minutes left. however, when the starting five plus Mays put their mind to it and played hard, they did well maintaining their lead over Austin Peay and coming back to beat Auburn.
Another take.
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 14:02 — JPDOhioIt seemed to me that that State struggled a little when full court pressure was applied. I didn't notice the lack of intensity that you mentioned, but I can't deny it either.
I also feel like the quality of play drops noticeably when the first six are subbed for. From 7 on down, I don't think those guys are quite as college game ready as Scott Wood seems to be in the early going. Still, those guys have to contribute and I think Sid distributed the minutes just about right.
It is early and the Pack will have its struggles this year. But I like the makeup of this team and those were not cupcakes that they played against this weekend. Hope that CJ's ankle is ok, because until Degand gets back (if it ever happens), there is not a lot of depth there.

Great win for the Pack
Mon, 11/23/2009 - 00:30 — Dougray2It doesn't matter how good or bad Auburn is. State was down and could have easily folded, but instead, they found a way to win even though the shots weren't falling for most of the nght. Last years team and the year before would have lost this game. Stae will take their lumps at times this year, but they will also win some games they are not expected to. Go Pack!!!!
Who ...

Sun, 11/22/2009 - 22:55 — measchamrobI watched this game online and the Pack really showed some heart and tenacity to win this game. Auburn may not be great but they fought hard tonight. I think it was a good test for State. Auburn nailed 3s all night. CJ Williams was hurt and we keep getting into foul trouble. I don't think State will be terrible in the ACC as the ACC is wide open this year. It's anybody's game this year and we played some pretty nice D. Mike Archer luckily isnt coaching BB. But who knows.
State will be better than expected.
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 23:33 — JPDOhioThey are young and will have some ups and downs. They will not challenge in the ACC this year, but they won't finish last either.
I like the way this team battles and hustles. They struggled shooting tonight, but still found a way to win. Tracy Smith had a tough night, but still came through in the end.
I am looking forward to watching them grow this year.
Auburn
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 22:20 — willncsuIs a terrible team. We will be horrible this year.
Yeah, well...
Sun, 11/22/2009 - 23:50 — bradleyb123We played right awful and still won the game. We played and won three days in a row, not an easy task. We're 4-0 right now after beating everyone on our schedule. It is what is is and I'll take it.
Just wondering.
