NBA Draft: In or out

Bookmark and Share

In a shock to no one, Greivis Vasquez — a second-round pick at best — will return to Maryland for his senior season, rescuing the Terps from a season in the abyss.

That makes the Terps the big winner in this year's draft version of "In or Out." Maryland gets to chase another 8-8 season with its best player, which puts them slightly behind last year's draft exit-strategy winner (UNC, duh).

Maryland isn't the only winner with today's official end of the "testing-the-waters" period for the NBA Draft on June 25.

Chalk up a win for Georgia Tech, with the return of forward Gani Lawal, not to mention guard Iman Shumpert. (Hey, with GT's track record with one-and-doners, anything is possible.)

Wake Forest stands as the biggest loser, with forward James Johnson and guard Jeff Teague exiting, although the Deacs kept forward Al-Farouq Aminu. After returning to the NCAA Tournament in 2009, the Deacs are tracking back towards the bottom third of the ACC in '10.

Even Duke, the preseason conference favorite, takes an "L." With Gerald Henderson, the Blue Devils could have contended for the national title.

Special citation to Clemson, which lost gunner Terrence Oglesby to Europe. Only Clemson.

Interesting, the ACC lost only one underclassman (N.C. State's J.J. Hickson) to the NBA last summer and the conference had one of its better basketball seasons.

With six early entrants, the returning players will have to put on their work boots to match last year's relative success by the conference (seven NCAA bids and the national championship).

On the bright side, it could have been worse for the ACC. Lawal, forward Ed Davis (UNC), forward Kyle Singler (Duke) and forward Solomon Alabi (FSU) all likely would have been first-round picks but opted to play one more year of college ball.

The final tally:

In the draft
G Jeff Teague, Wake Forest
F James Johnson, Wake Forest
G Gerald Henderson, Duke
G Wayne Ellington, UNC
G Ty Lawson, UNC
F Brandon Costner, N.C. State

Out
G Greivis Vasquez, Maryland
F Gani Lawal, Georgia Tech
F Dwayne Collins, Miami
F Al-Farouq Aminu, Wake Forest

Keep on Topic

Take your Acai Berry and stuff a full color flyer down your throat. This topic is about basketball and more specifically about Wake Forest standing as the biggest loser, with forward James Johnson and guard Jeff Teague exiting. How about we talk about that? Even though Wake forest stands to lose the most, I am hoping they will come out on top and clinch the title.

I would totally agree with this that Wake stands to lose the most. Hopefully they will be able to overcome and maybe get out to play some airsoft

NBA draft is a great event

NBA draft is a great event for the young talents who want to join the team. Thanks a lot for the detail ins and outs list. Well, yes it’s interesting that the ACC lost only one underclassman to the NBA last summer the conference had one of its better basketball seasons.

LOL

Hahahaha. Where to start?

Shock to no one Vasquez will be back? He was a 2nd round pick at worst, and had a shot to make it higher. You might be blind but try to be honest.

And, 8-8? Come on, this years team at MD will be much better then last years squad.

ACC

It's going to be a very interesting year next year in the ACC. I think that Duke will probably win the conference but there are some teams that might make it interesting. Georgia Tech should really improve and Boston College has enough athletes that they could surprise as well. I think the 2 teams everyone will be watching is UNC and NC State to see how they respond from all of the players leaving.

You are forgetting someone

The biggest so-called loser in the NBA Draft is clearly UNC who would have repeated as National Champs with their eyes closed were it not for the 2009 early entrance of 2 All NCAA Tournament team members.

losers?? not in the literal sense

how can any one be considered the biggest loser after a national title???  this is a big stretch.

DUIke

no way they are the pre season fav. not to mention that is your assumption and it should be stated that way.

Side bet?

That and the Miami in last. You're on.

why not

whatever it may be.

Addition by subtraction

And then there are those times when losing a player can improve a team. Brandon Costner is a classic example.

Sure, he was a big on a team that needs bigs. But his attitude, lack of hustle and poor judgement were negatives that outweighed any basketball ability he brought to the court. In case you are wondering, I am referring to that McD All-America skill level that we saw every half-dozen or so games that he decided to show up for the last two years.

Personally, I am glad his roster spot freed up to give a young, hungry player a chance to contribute and grow. At least there will be a chance for improvement at that spot over time.
