Gottfried, Williams team up in commercial

In addition to being for a good cause, these Infiniti Coaches' Charity Challenge commercials are actually pretty funny.

This one stars N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried and UNC's Roy Williams, and the voiceover is done by Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.

And unless, there was some serious high-tech editing (which is possible), it also appears that Gottfried and Williams actually got together to film the commercial (unlike the old "Guitar Hero" ad with Krzyzewski and Williams.)

Energized Pack tops Tar Heels 91-83

RALEIGH — N.C. State's marketing campaign proclaims, "This is our State."

After Saturday's six-years-in-the-making win over North Carolina, it's at least the Wolfpack's Triangle. N.C. State handled the Tar Heels 91-83 in front of an electric, sold out crowd at PNC Arena.

With 20 points and 11 assists from junior guard Lorenzo Brown, No. 18 N.C. State ended a 13-game losing streak to the Tar Heels (13-6, 3-3 ACC), who had entered the game with 19 wins in 20 games in the series under coach Roy Williams.

Sulaimon leads Duke to 84-64 win over Maryland

DURHAM—Rasheed Sulaimon had hit a wall after the holiday break. The freshman, who had been a constant presence for Duke on both sides of the ball, struggled to make shots and defend effectively.

And in the opening minutes of No. 1 Duke’s 84-64 over Maryland, it appeared like his struggles may continue. Dez Wells, Suliamon’s defensive assignment, pulled down three offensive rebounds and scored his team’s first seven points, and head coach Mike Kryzewski took Sulaimon out and voiced his unhappiness.

“He really got on me,” Sulaimon said.

His response, though, couldn’t have pleased his veteran coach more.

Gottfried, Warren moving on from critical tweet

N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried said he has talked to freshman forward T.J. Warren about the Twitter kerfuffle from earlier in the week and the two have moved on.

Former N.C. State player Thomas de Thaey was critical of Gottfried after Tuesday's 86-84 loss at Wake Forest.

"That's what happens when you're a great recruiter, but terrible coach!" de Thaey wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday morning.

Vitale back for more at PNC

Two weeks ago, Dick Vitale was at PNC Arena for N.C. State’s win over previously undefeated Duke, a game remembered as much for Vitale’s play-by-play of Will Privette storming the court in his wheelchair as the Wolfpack’s victory.

Vitale will be back Saturday along with ESPN’s College GameDay as N.C. State takes on North Carolina, and I spoke with him on Friday about his return to PNC, his scouting reports on the Wolfpack and Tar Heels and his induction into the National Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame in Salisbury on June.

Heels have owned N.C. State under Williams

N.C. State has lost 13 straight to North Carolina and 19 of 20 since coach Roy Williams replaced Matt Doherty in 2003.

For most of Williams' first nine seasons, UNC's wins have not been close, with the notable exception of the first game — a two-point UNC win in Chapel Hill — and the last one — a two-point UNC win in Atlanta in the ACC tournament.

Only five of the 19 losses have been by single digits, compared nine by 14 points or more. The average margin of victory for UNC in the 19 games is 13.2 points.

Pack 'perfectly fine' after team meeting

RALEIGH — N.C. State's loss at Wake Forest on Tuesday and defensive meltdown in the second half prompted a team meeting on Thursday.

Junior guard Lorenzo Brown did not provide too many details about the meeting other than the "nonsense" of the past three games — a loss at Maryland, a close home win over Clemson and the loss at Wake Forest — was addressed.

"There's been a lot of nonsense going on between us but we're all grown men," Brown said. "We sat down and talked it out. We're perfectly fine now."

Resurgent Hurricanes swamp No. 1 Blue Devils, 90-63

CORAL GABLES, Fla.—Throughout the Mike Krzyzewski era, Duke has routinely routed teams, going on game-sealing runs so fast that the opponent was left wondering how it happened.

Wednesday night, Duke was on the receiving end of one of those head-scratching runs, as the No. 1 Blue Devils lost 90-63 at No. 25 Miami.

It was the Blue Devils’ worst regular season loss since Feb. 4, 2009, when they also lost by 27 points to then-No. 10 Clemson, 74-47. Before that, it was Jan. 18, 1984, when then-No. 12 Wake Forest won by 31 points, 97-66.

“Not much to say after that,” Krzyzewski said. “They were men, we were boys for 40 minutes, and the score and performance reflected that disparity. They were terrific, and we did not hold up our end of the bargain tonight.”

Former player critical of Gottfried on Twitter

Thomas de Thaey left the N.C. State program in November, but he took one last shot at his former coach on Wednesday morning.

In response to N.C. State's 86-84 loss at Wake Forest on Tuesday night, de Thaey wrote on his Twitter account on Wednesday:

"That's what happens when you're a great recruiter, but terrible coach!"

Three Points: Bad defense, bad calls and hard choices

Three Points from N.C. State's 86-84 loss at Wake Forest on Tuesday:

1) No one to blame but N.C. State

Let's get this out of the way: Referees Les Jones, Ed Corbett and Ted Valentine were not good on Tuesday. There were too many fouls called, 44 in all, and there was no consistency to the calls.

That being said, the refs were not the reason N.C. State lost the game, they're not even one of the top two reasons N.C. State lost the game. N.C. State lost because its defense was bad in the second half (Wake scored 51 points) and it couldn't make consecutive free throws or an open shot when it had to.
