GREENSBORO -- Before Miami left the Greensboro Coliseum floor Wednesday, coach Frank Haith gathered his team at center court, around the ACC logo for a pre-tournament, post-practice brain teaser:
“I said, ‘Can anybody can tell me where all the teams are?’ ” Haith said.
The logo, an oval map of the East Coast, has small white squares where each team is located. For Haith, who grew up in Alamance County, went to Elon and served as an assistant coach at Wake Forest, the map is second nature. Then he asked his assistants to correctly locate all 12 teams.
“They didn’t know,” Haith said. “I knew. If they didn’t know, I figured there was no way our guys would know.”
Julian Gamble, a sophomore from Southern Durham High School, stepped up immediately and had all the answers.
“He started at Boston College and made his way down,” Haith said. “He knew exactly where all the teams were. I thought he might mess up on the North Carolina-Duke-N.C. State thing, but he knew exactly where they were at. He’s from North Carolina. He would know.”
Dwayne Collins, whose back problems led to an ankle injury and now a stress reaction in his leg, will not play against Wake Forest on Thursday, Haith said.
