CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Even when Sidney Lowe became Kay Yow's colleague at N.C. State, he couldn't bring himself to call her by her first name.
"She was always 'Coach Yow,' " Lowe said after N.C. State's road loss at Boston College on Saturday.
There was a moment of silence before the game at Conte Forum for Yow, the N.C. State women's basketball coach who passed away on Saturday morning after a long battle with breast cancer, and a moment of reflection afterwards for Lowe on the life of a Wolfpack legend.
"I can't really put that in words," Lowe said. "She really became the face of N.C. State. People talk about coach Yow, not just in basketball but what she did in the community. She's going to be missed tremendously."
Lowe endeared himself to Yow when he was player at N.C. State in the early 1980s.
"She always loved that I didn't turn the ball over," Lowe said.
When Lowe returned to campus in April 2006, the first visitor to his office was Yow.
"She sat me down and talked about the dynamics of the job," Lowe said. "She told me it was the toughest job in the country with the other two schools right down the road and Wake Forest down the road as well, and the expectations.
"She said it was the toughest job in the country but you can do it. Just run your club the way you know how to run it."
