Lousy timing by ACC and officials

Bookmark and Share

• Update: Karl Hess, Les Jones and Brian Dorsey worked Wednesday's game between N.C. State and Boston College. Those are three referees in the regular rotation that I would have expected to see at Duke on Tuesday.

The ACC has an officiating problem and that was exemplified not only in the first 12 minutes of Tuesday's game between Duke and Florida State — which were an awful exercise in inconsistency — but before the opening tip.

Karl Hess, Bernard Clinton and J.D. Collins worked Tuesday's game. Wait, J.D. who? Collins hadn't worked a game at Cameron Indoor Stadium all season until Tuesday and only one Duke game (and one FSU game) before that.

It's March, why are officials unfamiliar with the league — even veteran ones from other leagues, the Big Ten in Collins' case — being used in such a big game?

"We've had Collins," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said after the game. "He's one of the better officials in the country."

Collins did work Duke's game at Georgia Tech on Jan. 14 and more recently Florida State's win at Virginia Tech on Feb. 21 but he hasn't been part of the regular rotation of officials the ACC has used.

In theory, it shouldn't matter if an official has worked an ACC game or a Southland Conference game, if he's good, he's good. But in execution, familiarity has its benefits, namely consistency and the management of expectations of both the players and coaches.

If an official is bad, like Sean Hull or Raymond Styons, at least you know what you're getting.

Look, I know you can't talk about the refs and Duke without 97 percent of ACC fans going ballistic (search YouTube for "Elliot Williams and travel" or "Jon Scheyer and travel"), but Tuesday wasn't about Coach K "working" anyone. Rather it was about establishing control of the game.

In the first 12 minutes of the game, they called every little ounce of contact. Which is OK (boring but OK) but there was no consistency to the calls. On one end, it was an offensive clear-out, and then on the other end, the officials would turn-around and call the same foul on the same type of contact on the defender.

If you're going to be bad, be consistently bad. Inconsistency leads to "make-up" calls, and there were several by Hess, the senior official, trying to compensate for Collins and Clinton.

By the second half, the game turned into a wrestling match. Instead of every touch foul, the whistles were buried on every drive to the basket, at least until Solomon Alabi's technical (thank you, Haterade) with 6:36 left.

Collins, who had tee'd up FSU's bench in the first half, popped off another tech for Alabi after a dunk over Kyle Singler. Without the benefit of replay — but watching in real-time (like the official) — it looked like Alabi followed through on his dunk and came down on Singler.

As one reader put it, Alabi dropped a "double ax handle" on Singler, if you watch the replay. That might be but my problem with the tech is Collins didn't watch the replay either. There was contact, to be sure, but not malicious intentional contact (or taunting) that warranted a technical at that juncture in the game.

Alabi went to the bench with his fourth foul, with FSU up 64-63, and he took FSU's chances of winning with him. An official familiar with the league, like Hess (who was standing on the court, too) or Jamie Luckie or Roger Ayers, likely wouldn't have made the same call as Collins.

It's tough enough to officiate at Duke and divorce yourself from the emotion of the crowd and the specter of Krzyzewski. FSU — and Duke — deserved a referee familiar with that environment. The ACC should have known better.

You're going to get bad

You're going to get bad calls from the officials in every game. I don't think there's any real point in arguing, it happens. Over the course of the season the unfair calls against you and for you should even themselves out. It isn't worth concerning yourself about.

Pssssssssst ...

Hey nimrods,
The fact that ANY Dook or UNC fan complains about officials (AND/OR the media) is LAUGHABLE! Take your 2/3 referee gift-wrapped wins each year and walk away. Your history apparently earned them, so enjoy. Be glad you get them.
And BTW - in the video, I see Alabi dunking, then closing his eyes in effort and/or celebration, head pointed towards the floor (so eyes open or not, he's not looking at Singler) - then hits Singler with his hands (by accident) -as clearly evidenced by Alabi's pained reaction after his hands hit Singler's head. But, maybe that's too much of a magical bullet theory. Either way, the call (sorry, callS) during the game MORE than made up for the nerd's headache.

Technical Foul

I'm a Carolina alumnus and fan, and even I think that Alabi deserved that technical. He appears to bring his hands down and hit Singler's head. Regardless of whether it was intentional, it's a good call.

With that said, I have been very displeased with ACC officiating this season. There have been far too many hard fouls on break aways this year that were not whistled as intentional or flagrant. The increasingly physical nature of college basketball is alarming and jeopardizes all players. I've seen lackluster enforcement of the new goal-tending rule and spotty enforcement of traveling/palming. I'm not saying this as a Carolina fan, but an ACC fan. I watch as many ACC games as I can, and I've seen lousy officiating throughout the league this season.

It would be nice to see solid officiating next year with a focus on returning basketball to a game of skill and finess rather than watch as lousy officiating allows the game to decline in quality and ethic.

Lastly, I love that everyone hates Hansbrough and complains about him. That makes me feel all warm inside. :^)

jaredpace

couldn't have said it better. The increased physical nature of the game makes it harder to officiate and something needs to be done. Look at this terrible no call that happened last week. Singler could've been killed!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZZuG_ygtUg&feature=channel_page

Stuff like this needs to stop.

ACC Officials

Please, if you're making a list of terrible officials, Karl Hess should lead the list!

where to begin??

first off. great article. officiating has been terrible this season for all teams. however, I do understand no one gets calls like UNC and DUIke ... but they earn it with superior play and consistency! all great teams get these calls. those who dont understand that simply root for a consistently bad team.

case in point, DUIkes 94-95 team and UNC's 02-03 team. neither of those teams got any calls. why? they sucked.

we simply dont see any consistency in the ACC or anywhere else b/c these refs are constantly going from conference to conference every week. I know why they do it (ncaa tourney, no bias) but, if they could "sit" in one conference, it would get better.

haterade,

you are taking things to a new level and I, for one, dont have a problem with it! as far as I can figure (from you) DUIke's never done anything wrong and all should bow to The Rat. screw you and the one bedroom apartment you live in!

what I found odd is, all you people for or against the technical called on Alabi, no one is talking about Singler keeping his hands straight up and moving, intentionally, with Alabi as he hangs on the rim to avoid Singler. finally, he had enough and came down on Singler. cant blame him. it was Singlers fault b/c he was antagonizing the big fella instead of getting out of his way after the dunk. bottom line is if Singler moves after the dunk this DOES NOT HAPPEN!

I still stand by my statement Alabi was not walking 45 secs before the techinical. pivot foot never moved. later!!

KIDS

Oh come on.. I am so sick and tired of all of you little people making comments on things you do not understand.. like basketball..

Spend time playing and watching the game before boldly proclaiming what you know is true.

Everyone needs to stop worrying about refs.. every game that is played ( as has been the case for the last 50 years) has calls that are and are not made. Games are won or lost based upon the capability of players, their ability to perform under pressure, their coaching, etc.

not the refs.

Thank goodness we have Coach K and Roy and the other few who know how to prepare their teams and get them to win under varying circumstances year after year..

so you only get calls based

so you only get calls based on if your team is good or not?  what happens if both teams are mediocre?  who gets the calls then?  so basically you're saying the refs get together, check on the records for each team, and then decide ahead of time who will get the benefit of the doubt.  that seems logical...

take a step back

and rethink all the crap you have ever said about UNC and DUIke and, yes, it is very logical!

Alabi T

It does seem that Singler is just standing there from that angle, but you can see he's backing up after he went for the block. He wasn't running downcourt because he was expecting to have to inbound the ball to Scheyer. Even at that angle it's clear Alibi had room he needed when he let go of the rim, but instead of dropping his arms to his side to avoid contact he brought his hands together down onto Singler's head.

For Duke vs Carolina

I don't mind if the Refs call things against Carolina.
It won't hurt my feelings.
Go Duke !!!!

JPG

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qeu8G0E8_gw

Watch the video. If you think Alabi didn't deserve that technical, I don't know what to tell you. He looks straight down at Singler, brings both hands down on him, and he knows the call before he even turns around. Most officials would make that call.

I can admit that ACC officiating has sucked in general this season and it needs to be addressed.

No Call Of The Year

Duke-FSU was bad, but what about Duke-VT? Duke has the ball and the lead by a bucket...Time is running out. VT needs the ball back for a chance to tie and send it to overtime. The ball comes to Scheyer (The Drama Queen) and they collapse on him. Scheyer can't pass and he travels...no call...Then he travels a second time...no call. Then he travels again for the third time in five seconds....no call. Thousand saw it live. Millions saw it on TV. The commentators saw it, called it and had it featured in replay. My German Shepherd saw it and started barking and running in circles. The only people who either did not see it or refused to make the call were the three blind mice in the striped shirts. VT is forced to foul and..... Duke wins! Happens all the time. Dookies, call your next case.

NO CALL

You're a fool

Scheyer was fouled multiple

Scheyer was fouled multiple times on that possession. He did travel but was fouled as well. Anyone who refuses to see that is just ignorant.

I've been complaining about

I've been complaining about poor refs in the ACC in both football and basketball since I was a kid. I'm glad someone in the press has the guts to call them out on it finally. I know their job is hard, but inconsistency runs rampant.

FSU, Duke and Bad Officials

I still feel horrible about the impact the officials had on that game. Would FSU had still won if they had a fair shake? Who knows. At least we're in the dance.

But I wanted to remind people that the officials did steal another win from FSU, and FSU was the last bubble team left out. So the Officials did basically steal an NCAA bid from FSU. Yes, the crew was suspended, but nobody gave FSU back their W.

What is it about Duke??? Its always the same feeling of deja vu with Duke.

They don't always suck.

Not all Duke games are decided by the officials. They are not that stupid. They don't pull the rabbit out of the hat unless the outcome is still in doubt with less that five minutes to go.

Injury Reports?????

Has anyone seen a Maryland, Va.Tech, FSU injury report? Can't find it anywhere but Duke's is 3 or possibly 4 over the last few games. It is truly "hurting" season for some desperate teams. JPG, can't believe you did not include this important stat in your dissing of inconsistent officials.

Lennie Wurtz

ACC Basketball officiating has never been the same since Lennie Wurtz retired! I think we need to bring Lennie back!

Wirtz

You could have Wirtz, Larry Rose and Ted Valentine all refereeing the same game and the officiating would be better than what we've recently seen.

Now how big the gym would have to be to accomodate their egos...not sure on that one.    ;-)

The "Acting Coach" for Duke

The "Acting Coach" for Duke must have resigned. Duke was at one time the team with the best floppers, travelers. pushing off with the off arm while dribbling, and hooking with the elbow when trying to drive past a defender players..... in the league, now it's so obvious even I can easily spot it. (scheyer is still pretty good at it.) Of course having your own replay using DVR makes it a lot easier too. The calls...and no-calls made by officials made the difference in Duke's last two wins and I say that as a fact...not an opinion. When the game is close at the end, Duke gets all the "either way calls" and "phantom calls", and no-calls". I can't explain why...but I see what I see, and I'm not a Duke hater. I don't have a dog in this fight.

ACTING COACH

People who complain about refs are typically losers.. does that fit?

ACC officiating inconsistencies

Every time the ACC appears on television we have to endure the "tradition of excellence" and "sportsmanship" promos that come out of Grandover. The inconsistent officiating in the ACC reflects neither. As an example, if one compares the Alabi foul/ejection during the WFU-FSU game and the no call against Bell during VT-Duke, one wonders. If a player is flat on the court, why did they review the FSU player foul and not the VT one? As a very longtime ACC fan (back to the days of the Dixie Classic), it has become maddening to watch ACC games. They are now more violent than the NBA. The cognitive dissonance required to watch the ACC's commercials for itself vis a vis its appalling officiating is wearying. I fear Mr. Swofford and his crowd will only take consistent corrective action after there is a tragic injury.

It's not about your team

Will everyone stop reacting to JPG's post as if it were a criticism of Duke or any other team? Stop looking through your royal blue, baby blue, red, etc. glasses, and try to respond objectively for a change. The point of the post is to comment on the inconsistency of officials in the ACC, not that Duke may be getting the benefit of a call or two. I have been watching ACC basketball for many years, and the lack of consistency in officiating in the ACC this year may be the worst it has ever been. The players can adjust to whatever is being called, as long as the officials are consistent, but that is far from the case. Certainly, with DVRs, it's much easier now to rewind, review in slow motion, and criticize an official's call than ever before. But, in any event the quality and consistency of officiating (and officiating assignments) are significant issues that the league needs to address. Excellent post JPG.

Officiating

I too have been watching for many years.. since the middle 60s.. the refs are no different today than they were at that time.

Stop this stuff. watch the games. and get upset with the coaches who do not properly prepare their teams, the players who cannot perform under pressure, and the fans who comoplain about losing by blaming others.

Face it.. apparently those who complain about refs are the losers.... vent your anger to your teams for being unable to raise their games.

Joyner to the rescue

Thanks, dude.

But apparently you are missing the secret Duke-decoder ring that unlocks the subliminal message I hid in the first letter of every paragraph of the post.

I guess you didn't watch

the dook/carolina game when Singler threw the elbow to Hansbrough????

Since you think Alabi tried to hurt Singler intentionally, I guess we could classify the elbow thrown to Hansbrough as attempted murder...

Dook fans are the definition of front runners. They wouldn't know what to do if the game was called straight up....Oh, I'm sorry...they do...just replay the last 3 tourney appearnces.

Didn't watch

You are a fool..

An epidemic

Read my reply to Haterade, Reality_Man.

Nowhere in the post does it say "Duke won because of the refs."

It does however say:

"Look, I know you can't talk about the refs and Duke without 97 percent of ACC fans going ballistic (search YouTube for "Elliot Williams and travel" or "Jon Scheyer and travel"), but Tuesday wasn't about Coach K "working" anyone. Rather it was about establishing control of the game."

Not everything is about my unrelenting, and apparently obvious hate of everything Duke. How did you know I have a Duke dartboard in the basement?

Where are all you "Joe hates Duke" people when I'm calling Mike Krzyzewski the best coach in the ACC and the country? I think this group is not only suffering from selective reading but inflating every nuance into an insult that is simply not there.

As usual, your handle "Reality_Man" slays me.

Alabi went to the bench

Alabi went to the bench with his fourth foul, with FSU up 64-63, and he took FSU's chances of winning with him. An official familiar with the league, like Hess (who was standing on the court, too) or Jamie Luckie or Roger Ayers, likely wouldn't have made the same call as Collins.

-JPG claiming the ref won the game for Duke.

Without Alabi

FSU's chances of winning diminished. You don't think that's true? And more to the point, I didn't say Collins called a tech on FSU because he was working under some vast ACC conspiracy to aid Duke.

Collins made a bad call. The game could have been between FSU and FIU. That's what I don't understand about your problem, Haterade.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT DUKE.
