CHAPEL HILL — If top-seeded North Carolina had to play in the ACC Tournament today or tomorrow, point guard Ty Lawson would not play, coach Roy Williams said this afternoon. So whether the newly-dubbed conference player of the year is able to play Friday when UNC plays Miami or Virginia Tech is still up in the air.
Lawson's jammed right big toe — which did not prevent him from playing against Duke, with the help of a numbing shot — has grown worse since Sunday's victory, both coach and player said. Lawson, one of the fastest ballhandlers in the country, was wearing a walking shoe and said he was mostly moving from place to play with the aid of crutches.
Williams said he wouldn't hesitate to sit Lawson during the ACC Tournament with the NCAA tournament on the horizon; Lawson said he'll do whatever he needs to do to help his team's goal of winning a national title.
"If I can play in the ACC Tournament, I definitely will play if there's only a little bit of pain,'' Lawson said. "But the big picture right now is the NCAA Tournament, because that's where our goals are as a team. We'll just wait and see how it is, and make a decision from there."
Lawson jammed the toe when he smashed his foot into a basket support during last Friday's practice. He said doctors discovered a previously healed fracture in the toe, which is making the injury worse.

What a Farce
Wed, 03/11/2009 - 11:06 — cam4UNCsaltydawg1 you aren't following logic. Roy was saying he couldn't play on Saturday because of his toe but it was good enought to play on Sunday and since he played Sunday and the toe is worse, he would not be able to play any game today, no matter who it was..
Obviously you are a disgruntled NCSU fan. State is the ultimate choke artist, how many double digit leads did the fugdepackers lose this year and fold up in the second half. You dumd*** state fans ran Sendek out of town and now he is so glad and you guys are still losers.
UNC second string could whip State so you should look internally before you start throwing rocks.
It Would Be Interesting...
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:24 — jeromfitzTo see UNC without the star point guard for ACC Tournament action. Who do you think would play point? How about Frasor starting at point again? Sharing his duties with a high school point guard like Wayne Ellington as the two go to battle at the ACC. Let the freshman Drew relieve the players as usual. The thing is where is the fastbreak going show up at? Without Lawson UNC would lose some valuable speed with transition. How much speed? Quick baskets after a rebound type of speed. I hope Ty Lawson come back in time to finish out the tournament. I know he will play in the NCAAs Tournament. I just want see the nets pop off the hooks in all the tournaments.
Ty one on
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:17 — MODublessCarolina fan here but I've got to call this one straight up: classic sandbag. Toe swelling down, Ty Lawson up. Look for him to add to his MVP trophy case.
what a farce
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:15 — saltydawg1'ol roy said if the duke game had been saturday, lawson would not have played...now he says if they had a game today, he would not play.
give me a damn break....how was he able o play on one day in the middle???
this crap is more fraudulent than K's back!!!!
'ol roy and the tar hole fans are simply cookin' up excuses in advance, for their impending choke!!!!
