• Voting tallies for player, coach, defensive honors
North Carolina junior Ty Lawson has been named the ACC's player of the year, the school announced Tuesday afternoon. Lawson beat out Florida State's Toney Douglas by four votes.
He is the first point guard to win the award since UNC's Phil Ford in 1978.
Lawson averaged 15.9 points per game and led the ACC with 6.5 assists per game. He also has been named District 3 player of the year by the United States Basketball Writers Association.

Wed, 03/11/2009 - 10:45 — jcsx121I'm embarassed that the ACC would have Tyler Hansbrough as its third pick for POY. People all over the country must be wondering what the heck are they thinking.
Lawson
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:56 — psh0117For everyone who keeps dissing Lawson and saying that he didn’t deserve it and what not, please stop talking. I'll point out that I'm a UNC fan.
Hansbrough had a good year, and he did lead the league in scoring. but his numbers were down, statistically, this was his worst year. - still, good candidate though
Tony Douglas, good year, really led FSU with his senior leadership. Averaged 20.8 pts a game, but on nine separate times had more turnovers than assists. Some of which were 6 and 7 a game, with 0 assists
But, Ty Lawson, not only led UNC this year in big games, but was the offense for UNC. He's not a big point scorer, even though he averaged 15.9. He does so much more for the offense, that without him, UNC is not the same team. He also lead the league, in assists, with 196, a/t ratio 3.32, shot 53% from the field, and 46% from 3 point. Not mention only 59 turnovers. He Led UNC in wins twice over Duke, and Won the game on the last shot against Douglas and FSU.
Ty has been a Saviour
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:34 — jeromfitzfor UNC in crucial moments throughout the ACC regular season. He show up ready to play every night on the court. I think Hansbrough has a memorable season with setting records and scoring leader. Hansbrough is easily a choice for the Player of the Year also. Maybe Hansbrough can get the National Player of the Year. Who knows? Tyson kept hope alive for UNC with making last second play heroics this year more than ever. This is a sign of maturing with the game and being a quality performer on the court at crunch time.
dude

Forget it, Gatr
Wed, 03/11/2009 - 11:45 — JPDOhioYou should be happy he got 4 out of 5 letters in the name right. In college, I worked with a guy who talked like jerom writes. It took about a month, but I was finally able to understand him.
Personally, I look forward to his posts. The style is certainly original, if not grammatically correct.
does anyone remember hansbrough??
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 21:05 — saltydawg1The only unanimous choice for all-acc, and led the league in scoring...broke the record for free throws, and soon to break j j's record for points scored!! damn, what more could he do??
POY coming down to lawson-douglas is a damn joke..........somehow, I can't help but suspect that Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson had a hand in this travesty!!!!
Clueless

Eight Reasons why
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 19:36 — deanjohnson1967FMN
I will give you eight reasons why you are wrong:
Toney Douglas FSU lost games:
@ Northwestern 21 points 7 turnovers ~ Lost
Pitt 20 points 8 turnovers ~ Lost
Duke 18 points (7 of 26) 6 turnovers ~ Lost
@ Miami 30 points (16 of 34) 4 turnovers ~ Lost
UNC 34 points great game but Lost @ home
@ Wake 22 points 6 turnovers ~ Lost
@ BC 19 points (10 of 24) 4 turnovers ~ Lost
@ Duke 27 points another great game but ~ Lost
Not enough points, too many turnovers, and WOW 33 for 84 in just 3 of these eight losses! Maybe Toney should have let someone else shoot more often. He had a great great year. But if you dont win and make the plays down the stretch for your team then..............Well Ty gets the nod.
Best choice?
Tue, 03/10/2009 - 18:03 — fmnTy was the best player in the All Carolina Conference. Somebody give me numbers showing his superiority to Toney Douglas in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Anyone?
You want to argue tangibles? Then it's Douglas, the numbers prove it. Intangibles? Ty (a great player, no argument) was accompanied by thoroughbreds deep into the Carolina bench. Toney led a team with five frosh and carried it into a first round bye with leadership and clutch performances. This vote reminds me of the glory days of FSU football when it had second or third team All Americans who couldn't make all ACC.
Show me I'm wrong.

Well Deserved
