UNC: The Tar Heels looked good, Mack Brown Good, Thursday night, and it was not just those navy blue pants. Even if Rutgers finishes 3-9, it doesn't matter. With the mental "road" block out of UNC's way, the schedule is suddenly wide open for the Heels to win nine or 10 games, even if they lose the next two games (Virginia Tech and Miami).
ECU's in the top 25, and UNC is not far behind. Hide the cutlery from the State fans.
Duke: Just as Ted Roof once predicted, the Blue Devils have a chance — "So you're telling me there's a chance?" — at winning six games and qualifying for a bowl with Saturday's 41-31 shootout win over Navy.
The Blue Devils are 2-1 with a Duke-like Virginia team next on the schedule. Even kickers Nick Maggio and Joe Surgan are coming through for new coach David Cutcliffe. No one could have predicted that.
Ohio State: Jim Tressel won four NCAA Division I-AA national titles at Youngstown State. Given Ohio State's performance Saturday in Los Angeles — and in the past two BCS title games — the only way Tressel is going to win another national title is if the Buckeyes drop down a level.
Where's the pride, "The" Ohio State? Beanie Wells or not, you have to do better than 35-3 — or 41-14 or 38-24 for that matter.
Pac-10: With the free world piling on the ACC, the critics' attention was diverted, for at least one weekend, out west.
Other than USC's romp over Ohio State, the Pac-10 went 2-7 including 0-4 in the Mountain West Challenge — UCLA, Stanford, Arizona State and Arizona lost to MWC teams.
UCLA and Washington gave up a total of 114 points in their losses.
And the real kick in the pants, a ranked Cal team lost to — gasp! — an ACC team.

Bad sign for Groh
Thomas Jefferson could turn a phrase or two. "We hold these truths to be self-evident ... " yadda, yadda, yadda, but apparently, Mr. Jefferson's gift for words, and a dissenting opinion, is not being encouraged by his university.
In a brilliant preemptive move, Al Groh and UVa prohibited fans from bringing homemade signs to Scott Stadium before the season started. After a 35-point loss to UConn, which was preceded by a 45-point loss to USC, Groh needs to worry more about "the course of human events" and less about the "opinions of mankind."

Coachspeak-to-English translation
"This is really the outcome we thought could happen."
— USC coach Pete Carroll after the Trojans' 35-3 win over Ohio State
Translation: Stanford's better than Ohio State. Wake me when the regular season ends.

Pac-10 - Mountain West Challenge (0-4)
Wed, 09/17/2008 - 13:25 — mwc respect (not verified)After the Pac-10's performance this past weekend vs the MWC, I am sick of the Pac-10 thinking they are all that.
Reminds me of the Oregon head coach's (Mike Bellotti) comments after getting beat by BYU in the 2006 Las Vegas Bowl. "Um, remind me again who's in the Mountain West Conference," Before he was off the air, Bellotti further impugned the Cougars by saying "they have some fine players who could play anywhere in the Pac-10, but collectively, no, they couldn't compete at the highest level in the Pac-10." BYU clobbered the Ducks 38-8, prompting the following dialogue in Bellotti's post-game media session:
Reporter: "Have you changed your mind about BYU being able to compete against mid-level Pac-10 teams?"
Bellotti: "We didn't play like a mid-level Pac-10 team, either, but, no, my opinion hasn't changed."

I guess he was wrong and still is.
Pretty sad that the best the MWC champion can do if they don't make a BCS game is play in the Las Vegas Bowl against the fourth/fifth choice (alternating every year) of bowl-eligible teams from the Pac-10.
Groh must go.....
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 21:31 — confused Hoo (not verified)Living just a few miles outside C-ville here in the Commonwealth, it's hard to figure out what Al pathetic Groh has on the big wigs @ UVa--- last year was the exception, not the standard-- he is truly horrible and the fact that he was once an NFL coach means nothing now- I hope Duke, UNC, ECU, and VT crush us so Groh and his $1.5 mil. a year can exit stage left!

The pants
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 14:07 — UNCAlumnusUNC may have upset some fans, but check out uniwatchblog.com. OSU players were wearing see-throughs against USC. I guess the better to take a whippin. If you like uniforms, the above site is nice. For the record, I hope NCSU beats ECU so when UNC beats NCSU, they can imply an exponent.
For the record ...
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 11:18 — jpg (author)State beat both UNC and ECU in 2007. It would take a split in '08 but the sweep seems imminent.
Either way, it should be a great atmosphere at C-F on Saturday. I'm looking forward to it.

Just to be clear...
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 13:00 — JPDOhioyou are predicting the Pack to lose both. Not sure who is sweeping who in your comment.
BTW, your comment on Ohio State is right on target. I am a Buckeye fan and even I hope we are spared from another pasting in the BCS championship game.
one liners
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 08:32 — gvillegatrthere were a lot of great quotes to take from this edition of "late-hits." but this one was my favorite ...
"ECU's in the top 25, and UNC is not far behind. Hide the cutlery from the State fans."
Hide the cutlery...
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 09:11 — JPDOhioFrom ECU fans after the Pack upsets them this weekend.
And from Tar Heel fans after State beats them fair and square in Chapel Hill in November.
Of course, I was also hopeful the Buckeyes would be competitive in the Coliseum. But it is better to be hopeful than suicidal.
well lawd have mercy, i just
Mon, 09/15/2008 - 08:50 — packfan (not verified)well lawd have mercy, i just hope NC State doesn't "upset" their rivals' dream seasons...
