First Look

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — So much for the ACC Championship Game.

No. 17 North Carolina, which began Saturday in the driver's seat to win the Coastal Divison almost certainly lost its chance at a trip to Tampa by losing to Maryland 17-15 at Byrd Stadium.

UNC was leading 15-14 with 10:25 left in the game when the Terps — who dominated time of possession — marched 81 yards on 19 plays and scored on a 26-yard field goal.

The Tar Heels had a chance to take back the lead, but Cameron Sexton threw an interception with 49 seconds left to seal the Terps' victory.

Technically, UNC could still advance to the league title game, but the chances are remote With two games left in the regular season, Miami, Virginia and Virginia Tech would all have to lose at least once, and Carolina would have to win out.

With 13:46 left in the first half, back-up tailback Davin Meggett gave the Terps a 14-12 lead when he capped an 80-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown run. UNC simply couldn't stop him, as he accounted for 57 of the yards on that drive total.

Then Carolina turned over the ball for the first time in three games when Sexton took off running and it slipped out of his hands. Maryland's Adrian Moten recovered. But UNC's Michael McAdoo halted any scoring hope when Maryland when for it on 4th and 7 and he sacked Chris Turner. It was only the sixth time this year the Terps have allowed a sack.

UNC freshman Casey Barth kicked his second field goal of the day, this time a 28-yarder with 4:12 left, to give the Tar Heels a 15-14 lead at the break.

With 2:02 left in the third quarter, Barth missed a 28 yarder when it hit the left upright.

It all began with a frenetic first quarter.

UNC got on the board first when Maryland long snapper Andrew Schmitt hiked the ball over punter Travis Baltz’s head. Baltz picked it up at the 4-yard line and dove into the end zone for a safety.

Once Carolina's offense actually got on the field, a Hakeem Nicks 26-yard reception helped set up a Barth 38-yard field goal.

But with 6:26 left in the first quarter, Maryland tailback Da'Rel Scott — who was "non-contact" in practice all week because of a nagging shoulder injury — capped a 76-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. That gave the Terps their first lead of the game, 7-5.

But it took UNC only two plays to counter. On a 2nd-and-5, Cooter Arnold caught a pass from Cameron Sexton — off defensive back Kenny Tate's tip — at the 33-yard line, then cut left and sprinted the rest of the way to the end zone. His 59-yard reception marked the first touchdown of his career.

why is no one talking about ...

the pass that fell incomplete for maryland at the 1 yd line with 2:19 left in the game. it was ruled a cacth but overturned by instant replay. the problem was the clock was at 2:19 when the "catch" was made. the clock continued to run down to 1:39. then, they changed the clock to 1:45 beofre the next play. since the play was ruled as incomplete, why was the clock ot set back to 219. no one even discussed it on tv or on the sidelines, or on here?? why not??

yeah..

yeah man, i saw that! i wasnt aware that the clock was at 2:19 but i was like why havnt they changed it back? but then i saw it go from 1:39 to 1:45 so i guessed that not as much time ran off as i was thought. idk about that though. cant expect much more from ACC refs

Sexton

he hasnt played well since the Miami win. although he was adequate against the lame ND Irish.

whenever we scored today, it was b/c of the HB pass or the end around. the pass Sexton actually threw for the TD was a screw up. if it had not been tipped by the defender, the ball would have fallen to the ground incomplete.

next week is too late.

does anyone want to purchase my UNC/NCSU tickets??? j/k!

yates

sexton wasn't the one responsible for the defensive line getting dominated for much of the game. the long drive at the end appeared to really tire them out.

cmon dude.

the defense gave up 17 pts on the road.  Little Barth missed a chippy from 28 yds.  that and the QB play was the differnce.  not the defense.

ugh

1 question? Why didn't they put Yates in? Sexton obviously wasn't getting it done. How bad must one do before they put in the next QB or in this case the "better" QB. They better put Yates in for the rest of the year now that were out of the ACC Championship picture! bull crap!

he has said as much,

he has said as much, therefore it is not true? hmmm. ask UM.

congrats to Maryland and it's fans.

That was not a very fun game to watch. I'd like to congratulate Maryland on claiming the victory. As for Davis leaving....I do not think it likely. He has said as much. As a matter of fact I think this will be the last time I consider the issue. Again, Congratulations Maryland.

VOL's Win!

This will just make the decision to move over to good o'l Rocky Top a little easier. Nice knowing you Butch and good luck at UT.

have I mentioned yet why

have I mentioned yet why Yates wasnt put in at all???? next week against State is too late!

why was the clock not set

why was the clock not set back to 219 after the incomplete pass at the GLK???????????????????????????????????????

UNC is going to give this thing away.

I'm not too happy with it, either.

for the Love of God, get

for the Love of God, get Sexton out of the game! gulp! put Paulus in!

please give Yates an

please give Yates an oppurtunity ... unless it is b/c the ground is so wet/slippery. which I guess is prolly the reason.

Cam Sexton

its time Butch.  get him out of the game.  he has been less than impressive, again, today.
