If Jerry Colangelo and the Boston Globe are correct, Duke will have to share Mike Krzyzewski with USA Basketball for another three years.
Is Coach K's second gig good for his day job? Coach K thinks so (26:30). Why else would he coach the national team for another three years?
Is it a bad thing? Hmmm. The numbers don't support that argument but the numbers are in a vacuum.
If Duke was located in Barstow, the 112-28 record since K took the U.S. gig would look great, fabulous even. And there's two ACC titles ('06 and '09) and four straight trips to the NCAA Tournament (hey, if just getting to the tourney was so easy what happened to Florida, after its back-to-back national titles, or UConn in 2007?)
But Duke's in Durham, right next to Chapel Hill, which has a basketball team that just happens to have a 124-22 record with two ACC titles, two Final Fours and a national title over the same time span.
See the problem?
Krzyzewski's involvement with USA Basketball has as much to do with UNC passing Duke as Al Gore did with the invention of the Internet but perception is reality.
The reality is Duke is 5-4 in the NCAA Tournament since '05 and UNC's 14-3. Until that changes, Duke fans will question (and UNC fans will snicker) what Krzyzewski does with his down time.
####
Mike Krzyzewski took the USA coaching job on Oct. 26, 2005. Duke's record in the four seasons since is nearly identical to the previous four seasons, with the major exception of the NCAA Tournament.
And just as a point of comparison, UNC's record over the eight-season stretch. History notes Roy Williams replaced Matt Doherty after the 2002-03 season (but you could figure that out from the chart).

Simple answer
Fri, 07/10/2009 - 08:09 — JPDOhioCoach K is an outstanding basketball coach- nothing more, nothing less. He is involved in all this other stuff because he is bored with just being Duke's coach and needs the constant ego stroke that he gets when he branches out.
Meanwhile, Duke is starting to flounder because K has no one under him with an ounce of coaching talent. He is clearly lousy at developing successful coaches. His program is living on reputation alone. They are not feared by anyone in the ACC and have been also-rans in the NCAA tournament for the last few years.
I see them continuing to slip until (unless) he gets refocused on his Duke program.
I just don't really care...
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 15:48 — UNC1998How Duke plays with the coach also coaching USA basketball. All I really know is facts. I happen to like those facts a whole lot. I'm of the opinion that more of the same is in the offing.
Hate to bust Blue cats bubble
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 14:49 — festerOle Roy was asked to coach Team USA before coach K and he passed.
On to the goods.
Duke's problem is not Coach K, nor Team USA. The problem is the assistant coaches. Steve Wojo and Chris Collins are Duke's problem. Head Coaches can't do it all and rely on their top assistants to handle recruiting, day-to-day drills, etc.... Coach K doesn't have the talent in his assistants to coach players up to their potential or correctly adress problems from coaching during games to day-to-day practice.
It's the truth, Deal with it dook fans

K's Demise
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 15:55 — heelsno1If your premise is correct, then look no further than Special K. After all, he hired Pete Gaudet and all of his other assistant coaches.
theme
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 21:16 — gvillegatrall his assistants are crap. Bender turned out to be a turd (UNiv of Washington) after showing one or two years of promise. Snyder got run out of Mizzou. Amaker got run out of Mishitigan. those guys never amounted to anything. am I lieing to anyone!!??

Class Act
Fri, 07/10/2009 - 10:05 — heelsno1Respectfully, I disagree. Johnny Dawkins is a class act (more so than Special K in my opinion). Dawkins has led Stanford to consecutive 20-win seasons. Also, I think that Chris Collins is a top-notch assistant and will have a successful career as a head coach. As for Wojo, well, the jury is still out. Wojo just may have slapped too many hardwood courts along the way.
It is no secret that I am not a big fan of Special K. Sure, Duke is an elite university and its basketball program has produced special basketball teams and some star players whom I admire and respect. Dawkins heads that list. Clearly, Special K has developed a prominent program, and he is a certain Hall-of-Fame coach alongside Dean Smith and Roy Williams. Sure, he has had his day with several NCAA national titles. Just like Special K, both Dean Smith and Roy Williams have multiple national titles. Interestingly, all three coaches enjoy winning records at Cameron.
Go to www.truthaboutduke.com and there is a great deal of information about Special K that distinquishes the man from the myth. Incidentally, it is my understanding that this website was created by some Maryland fans, not anyone from UNC. For me, I lost respect for K by observing his overly-intense and seething courtside demeanor (e.g. frequent expletive-laced outbursts, including constant berating of the officials who run over to him like trained seals whenever he stands). Years ago, the mishandling of Pete Gaudet's situation was revealing about the gap that seems to exist between the man and the myth.
RE: class act
Fri, 07/10/2009 - 10:25 — gvillegatrrespectfully, you can't disagree with a theme when you give us only one example of an asst coach. Not to mention he has only coached one year, not two at Stanford. he's hardly qualified as a good coach IMO.
Thats not saying Dawkins won't be a good one, though.
honest coach
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 13:55 — bluecatt1ever wonder why they ask coach k to be the usa coach and never ask your cheating heart, aka , ol roy, must be a reason. go duke!!!!!!!!!!!

Thu, 07/09/2009 - 11:40 — clayt85As a UNC alumnus, I must admit how much joy I have taken in watching UNC consistently out-perform Duke over the past few seasons.
Still, I am not so sure as some of my fellow Tar Heels that K's reasons for taking the USA job are so selfish. Regardless of the reasons, it is hard to deny the impact he has had in restoring the image of USA basketball.

Thu, 07/09/2009 - 13:43 — gvillegatrall the so called greats of the NBA wanted to play for the USA again. there was a great lull where no one wanted to play for the Gold.
K's Demise
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 10:25 — heelsno1In my opinion, Special K operates on the premise that whatever is good for K is good for Duke. Since his NCAA glory days are a distant thing of the past, this Olympics renewal is mainly about K's huge need for ego gratification by keeping his name on the sports page.
One other salient point with respect to UNC's dominance over Duke, the Heels won the last 4 straight at Cameron and were 6-2 in regular season games versus K's teams throughout the Hansbrough era.

Thu, 07/09/2009 - 10:13 — gvillegatrcan coach who ever he wants and thus allowing fans to draw their own conclusions ...
He has put it on crusie control in the NCAA. he knows he doesn't hardly have to get out of bed to surpass Bobby Knight as the all-time most wins in the NCAA. So it doesn't realy matter how inferior he is to Coach Williams now. But make no mistake, he is inferior now.
He needs a distraction and another way to pet his ego and what better way to do it?? coach the best team in the entire world. he gets the best of both worlds ... coaching at DUIke and coaching the best players in the world from the NBA.
a good ol smoke screen if you will.
DUIke
Thu, 07/09/2009 - 17:26 — trickydickpksI love how you Carolina fans like to include the "DUI" moniker when typing Duke. Your wit goes about as far as your memories. While Redick did get a DUI, UNC great Phil Ford got TWO DUIs.
