AP, USA Today polls
Pollspeak (how everyone else voted)

1. Texas
Record: 4-0
Last week: 1 (bye)
This week: Colorado

The Horns make a slight upgrade from the bye week to 1-3 Colorado.

2. Florida
Record: 4-0
Last week: 2 (bye)
This week: @ LSU

Here you go, Gator fans, what you've all been waiting for: win Saturday and your No. 1 on this ballot. I know you've been losing sleep over it.

3. Alabama
Record: 5-0
Last week: 3 (won @ Kentucky, 38-20)
This week: @ Ole Miss

Preseason buzz: this game was for the SEC West. October reality: Just another game for the Tide.

4. LSU
Record: 5-0
Last week: 4 (won @ Georgia, 20-13)
This week: Florida

The offense is ugly but the Tigers keep winning. SEC picked them up with the 8 p.m. start time, they haven't lost at a Saturday night home game since 2002.

5. Virginia Tech
Record: 4-1
Loss: vs. Alabama
Last week: 5 (won @ Duke, 34-26)
This week: Boston College

The Hokies have lost two straight regular-season meetings with BC, only to beat the Eagles in the last two ACC title games.

6. Boise State
Record: 5-0
Last week: 7 (beat UC-Davis, 34-16)
This week: bye

As long as Oregon keeps winning, and Boise does, too, I'll keep the Broncs in this general vicinity.

This is the one team I'll cut some scheduling slack because nobody wants to play these guys, certainly not in Boise.

7. Miami
Record: 3-1
Loss: @ Virginia Tech
Last week: 12 (beat Oklahoma, 21-20)
This week: Florida A&M

One loss out of Florida State, Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and Oklahoma is better than anyone at Miami could have imagined in August. Finally, a respite with the Rattlers.

8. USC
Record: 4-1
Loss: @ Washington
Last week: 8 (won @ Cal, 30-3)
This week: bye

After the bye, the Trojans hit the toughest stretch of their schedule with a home date with 2008 conquerors Oregon State sandwiched between road dates with Notre Dame and Oregon.

9. Ohio State
Record: 4-1
Loss: USC
Last week: 9 (won @ Indiana, 33-14)
This week: Wisconsin

The Buckeyes shutout streak ends at nine quarters. The Badgers are unbeaten (5-0) but relatively untested.

10. TCU
Record: 4-0
Last week: 10 (beat SMU, 39-14)
This week: @ Air Force

Strange but true, after playing two ACC teams, TCU's schedule picks up this week with its MWC opener.

11. Cincinnati
Record: 5-0
Last week: 11 (won @ Miami, Ohio, 37-13)
This week: bye

The road trip to South Florida next Thursday will tell else more about the Bearcats than the first five games.

12. Oregon
Record: 4-1
Loss: @ Boise State
Last week: 13 (beat Washington State, 52-6)
This week: @ UCLA

Forty-two and 52 points in the first two Pac-10 games. Should tell you a little bit about Boise that the Ducks only scored eight in the opener. The only viable threat to USC in the Pac-10.

13. Houston
Record: 3-1
Loss: @ UTEP
Last week: 6 (lost @ UTEP, 58-41)
This week: @ Mississippi State

Everyone has the right to their own vote but how do you drop Houston out of the top 25 after one loss? At least, drop Oklahoma State, too.

See ECU fans, I respect C-USA.

14. Iowa
Record: 5-0
Last week: 15 (beat Arkansas State, 24-21)
This week: Michigan

This is the only big Big Ten game the Hawkeyes actually get at home. Clash of styles with Michigan's spread against Iowa's smash-mouth offense.

15. BYU
Record: 4-1
Loss: Florida State
Last week: 14 (beat Utah State, 35-17)
This week: @ UNLV

Two road games before a showdown with TCU in Provo.

16. Georgia Tech
Record: 4-1
Loss: @ Miami
Last week: 19 (@ Mississippi State, 42-31)
This week: @ Florida State

Memo to UNC, N.C. State, Florida State and everyone else in the ACC: This is how you respond to a loss. The Jackets got clocked by Miami on Sept. 17 and responded with a 24-7 win over UNC and 42-31 win at Mississippi State.

17. Oklahoma State
Record: 3-1
Loss: Houston
Last week: 18 (bye)
This week: bye

Big 12 play begins for the T. Booners with a trip to College Station.

18. South Carolina
Record: 4-1
Loss: @ Georgia
Last week: 21 (beat S.C. State, 38-14)
This week: Kentucky

Everyone else has used Kentucky as a punching bag, South Carolina should be able to do the same.

19. South Florida
Record: 5-0
Last week: 22 (won @ Syracuse, 34-20)
This week: bye

Bulls wish Greg Paulus had another season of eligibility.

20. Kansas
Record: 4-0
Last week: 23 (bye)
This week: Iowa State

Iowa State then Colorado, the nonconference cupcakes keep rolling in for the Rock Chalkers, oh wait.

21. Auburn
Record: 5-0
Last week: NR (won @ Tennessee, 26-22)
This week: @ Arkansas

Congrats to Gene Chizik, who has equaled his two-year win total at Iowa State in five weeks at Auburn, but it's not like Tommy Tuberville left the cupboard empty.

22. Nebraska
Record: 3-1
Loss: @ Virginia Tech
Last week: 24 (bye)
This week: @ Missouri (Thursday)

Spent the bye week kicking themselves for late defensive lapse at Virginia Tech.

23. Oklahoma
Record: 2-2
Loss: vs. Brigham Young, @ Miami
Last week: 16 (lost @ Miami, 21-20)
This week: Baylor

The Big 12 title is the only thing left for the Sooners to play for.

24. Wisconsin
Record: 5-0
Last week: NR (won @ Minnesota, 31-28)
This week: @ Ohio State

Why not the Badgers in the Big Ten? They can take a big step with a road win at Ohio State.

25. Georgia
Record: 3-2
Loss: @ Oklahoma State, LSU
Last week: 21 (lost to LSU, 20-13)
This week: @ Tennessee

The smart play would be for FSU to bring Mark Richt back. Georgia's probably ready to let him go, at least more so than at any time in the previous three years.

Out: Michigan (17), Cal (25)

Next five: Missouri, Stanford, Notre Dame, Utah, Ole Miss

Right

Two weeks ago, UNC did look like the best team in the State. This week, they do not. Although UNC beat ECU, I am not sure that they would have, had they played like they did the last two weeks.

Wake beats State, but the way Duke played against VT, they possibly could have beaten Wake, State, UNC or ECU.

The only clear (potential) "State Champion" now is UNC and for that to happen, they would have beat Duke and NCSU and then play Wake in the ACC Championship game.

Personally, I am not holdling my breath.

Claims and Ratings

Two weeks ago, JPG pointed to UNC as the best college football program in the state of North Carolina.

Clearly, he was wrong about that.  Wake Forest can correctly make that claim!

Agreed.

It goes like this...

1.  Wake

2.  NCSU

3.  UNC

4.a.  ECU

4.b.  Duke

NC Ratings

Man, how far has ECU fallen this season!  Tied with Duke in the state ratings.  Well, I think ECU would be favored by 6 or 7.

Anyway, I think this says that college football in the Carolinas is just mediocre this season.
