Irving's surgery successful

Bookmark and Share

N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving's surgery was successful and went as expected on Sunday after he suffered a broken leg and collapsed lung in a car crash early Sunday morning, school sports information director Annabelle Myers said Monday morning.

Irving suffered injuries that were serious but not life threatening in a one-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 while returning to campus from his home in Wallace, N.C., northwest of Wilmington.

Myers said coach Tom O'Brien visited Irving at the Wake Med Trauma Center on Sunday and said Irving feels extremely fortunate to be alive after the crash.

According to a state highway patrol report, Irving ran off the road at 4:40 a.m. near the 314-mile marker in western Johnston County. He was cited for careless and reckless driving, and being tired or sleepy may have contributed to the crash, according to the police report.

Irving is a junior who was expected to be one of the top linebackers in the ACC this season. Myers said Irving's playing status for the 2009 season has not yet been determined.

get well nate

i too, fell asleep at the wheel on i-40 a month ago and totalled my car. I, like you, feel extremely fortunate to be alive. Get well soon and we'll see you on the football field in time, where you can resume swallowing quarterbacks whole and flying around like superman to the football!

Go Pack!

Time To Heal

Take time to heal, Nate. Heal your leg and build that GPA. Your teammates, your coaches, your fans, & the NFL can wait for a healthy Nate. May God guide your physicians with the knowledge & advice for a complete recovery.

In my younger days, I too thought I could live without sleep. On my return home to Rockingham from a weekend date with my girl in Deep Run, I fell asleep, totaled my car, and broke my foot. Life lessons arise from such tragedies as you & I experienced. I married that girl 37 1/2 yrs ago. & have never fallen asleep behind the wheel again. Hope you reap a lesson as rewarding as mine.

The people of Wallace, Rose Hill, & the Wolfpack have you in our prayers

Unbelievable...just

Unbelievable...just unbelievable! Speedy recov to Nate for sure, and glad he's OK. But when, oh when will the Karma winds shift!!??

Good news

Take whatever time you need to recover fully, Nate. Your long-term health and welfare is more important than anything else.

And when you are feeling better and chomping at the bit to come back, if your doctors and therapists tell you that you need more time, please listen to them. You are young and have a great future ahead of you. Please be patient.

good

i am glad to hear that this young man is ok, even thou i am a duke fan, i wish the best fo him,

nate

I am very concerned about Irving's return this season. The lung will probably heal fast but if the bone that was broken was a weight bearing bone such as the tibia or the femur, he will probably miss the season. HE IS AN AWESOME DEFENSIVE PLAYER. ALOT OF FUN TO WATCH!

Putting rivalries aside...

This Tar Heel wishes Irving a speedy and complete recovery. He no doubt had a future in football, and I hope he keeps it.
