N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving was scheduled for surgery Sunday evening after suffering non-life-threatening injuries in a car crash early Sunday morning.

Irving has a broken leg and collapsed lung and was taken to Wake Med Trauma Center according to a statement released by the school. He was cited with careless and reckless driving, according to a state highway patrol report, after a one-vehicle crash at 4:40 a.m. near the 314-mile marker on Interstate 40.

There is no indication in the police report that alcohol was involved, but the report indicates that being tired or sleepy may have contributed to the crash, which occurred near Cornwallis Road in western Johnston County.

Irving lost control of his vehicle and went off the road to the left, then overcorrected and swerved off the right side of the road, according to the police report. His vehicle struck two trees and came to rest in a ditch, according to the report.

Irving's stepmother, Frances Corbett, said Irving was returning to N.C. State's campus from his home in Wallace, N.C., which is about 35 miles northwest of Wilmington.

"He's doing really well," Corbett said. "He knows he's lucky to be alive."

Corbett said Irving expects to recover from his injuries quickly. Irving's status for the upcoming football season was not immediately clear.

In a statement released by N.C. State, coach Tom O'Brien said the team's thoughts and prayers are with Irving and his family.

"All of his teammates and coaches will be there to support him as he recovers and goes through the process of rehabilitation," O'Brien said.

Despite missing almost one-third of the 2008 season with injuries as a sophomore, Irving tied for third on N.C. State’s team with 84 tackles, earning honorable mention All-ACC honors.

He led the Wolfpack with four interceptions.

Hi,
Can an insurance company reject entire car accident claim if bills show price of few parts higher than MRP ?

Nate hope you have a speedy

Nate hope you have a speedy recovery. Wheter you play football or not the wolfpack family will be there for you.

Get well soon, Nate!

Best wishes for a speedy recovery, Nate. Prayers of thanks that you survived and hope you get well soon. Everyone remember to be careful behind the wheel and buckle that safety belt!

Go Heels,
-2k

Hope you get well soon Nate,

Hope you get well soon Nate, I know how scary those crashes can be and what an experience it is, hope your rehab goes smooth and easy

I'm a Carolina fan and wish

I'm a Carolina fan and wish Irving a speedy recovery. Get well soon young man!

come on...

as an NC State fan, i can't believe anyone has the nerve to talk about football strategy. He probably came within inches of his family making funeral arrangements for him. Can't we just hope he gets well and walks normal again?

Reason

The reason I brought up the football season because the article says the injuries are NOT life threatening and he is expected to recover quickly, it never said he was inches from dying (I do not know where you got that from).  From another article, he was to have surgery on his leg this evening.  He is a competitor and will want to get back on the field quickly but I hope he redshirts and takes time to recover and not rushing back and potentially making the injury worse.

Having driven from Raleigh to Wilmington and back numerous times (went to Unc-Wilmington), the drive is pretty boring and if you are already sleepy, that is dangerous especially going at or above the 70 mph speed limit.

i understand...

it's just there is a time and place for everything.  football/sports is in a distant distant position from life itself, which i am sure you will agree.  It's just we shouldn't make it sound like that's the only thing we're concerned with.

As far as being inches from dying, of course i am assuming, but with a broke leg, collapsed lung, hitting two trees... people have died from less.  I'm sure being an elite athlete helps you, although why do drunks always escape from the fatalities they litter the roads with?

Sports Board

This is a sports message board.  If there was a time and place to discuss the impact this has on the football team, now and here seems about right.  Hope he gets better sooner rather than later as he was trying to boost his draft status this year and now may have to wait one more.

... we sure can!

get well soon, Nate!  glad it was not worse and hope you recover ASAP.

I guess you decided to drive back to campus from a long night out in Wallace??

Nate Irving

My thoughts and prayers are with you as you strive to recover from your injuries. I am the Nana of your Athletic Trainer, Amanda Upchurch, and a supporter of the Wolfpack Football Team. I hope you have a speedy recovery.

Nate Irving

Mention NCSU football and the JERKS come out of the woodwork. Nate, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Get well soon.

Get well Nate

Hate to see the injury bug bite State every year. Irving is one of the top 15 players in the ACC and very to watch. Hopefully he'll recover quickly and help the Pack win some games.

By all means, let us know

By all means, let us know ASAP when he'll be back to 100%, and able to suit up because after all..... it's all about Wolfpack football. In fact.....If he was a 3rd string guy and not such an important part of our defense this would not even be a news story and we wouldn't even all that concerned, cause after all, automobile accidents happen all the time. however in this case he's a starter, so.....get well soon and. go Pack !

i appreciate good comedy but...

I appreciate good comedy, but that's disrespectful and just plain not funny.

Easy does it, partner.

Of course it is news. We pay attention to people and things we have an emotional attachment to. Nate's accident and recovery will have a significant impact on Wolfpack football, so we are interested in whether Nate is able to come back this year and it should be written about.

That said, Nate will need all the physical and psychological support he can get. As bad as his physical injuries are, my guess is that he is just devastated to be missing part or maybe all of a season that looks so promising. Hopefully, he will make a full and quick recovery, but it can't be rushed. However long it takes, it takes.

From the early postings on this sight, it looks like there are get well wishes and prayers from numerous football fans. And not just from Wolfpackers. Get well soon, Nate.

we love you Nate

A huge loss for this years squad!

Get well soon, Nate

Get well soon. With the season about 8 weeks away, he will likely miss all of summer practice as well as the early part of the season if not all season. It will put more pressure on our young linebackers (Sterling Lucas and Dwayne Maddox (Sophs) and Terrell Manning (RS. Fresh)) to step up in his absence.
