GREENSBORO — Three minutes separated N.C. State from the ACC tournament championship game.
Up a point with 3 minutes left, after having erased a 10-point halftime deficit, the Wolfpack was so close to a third straight upset and a date with Duke for its first ACC title in 23 years.
Then Derrick Favors ruined the red-and-white ending. The Georgia Tech freshman scored five of his 17 points in the final 3 minutes to push the Yellow Jackets past a resolute 11th-seeded N.C. State team for a 57-54 win.
"Everyone was thinking we were going to close it out," Wolfpack freshman Scott Wood said.
N.C. State outlasted Clemson and Florida State in Greensboro, both bigger and stronger teams, but couldn't climb over the Jackets into the final.
Favors, the ACC's rookie of the year and perhaps the most talented player in the league, withstood a one-on-one duel with Wolfpack big man Tracy Smith, and a wild, contentious sequence with State guard Javier Gonzalez to give the seventh-seeded Jackets their third win in as many days.
Favors' biggest shot came with 2:50 left when he stepped off the block and drained a 10-foot jumper to give the Jackets a lead (47-46) they wouldn't give up.
GT opened the door with missed free throws in the final minute, but State's last chance — a Gonzalez 3-pointer with 2 seconds left — bounced off the rim.
"We had the crowd with us but we made some dumb plays at the end," senior forward Dennis Horner said. "Georgia Tech made that final run in the last 3 minutes and got the game."
The Wolfpack finished with only six turnovers but the one by Gonzalez near midcourt with 1:29 left was the biggest. Iman Shumpert stripped Gonzalez of the ball and fed it ahead to Favors. Gonzalez grabbed Favors' jersey, for an intentional foul, then swung him around by it.
After the tempers cooled, Favors hit one of his two free throws and scored a field goal on the same possession to push GT's lead to 52-46.
"I think [Gonzalez] was more frustrated with himself for making the turnover," Wolfpack coach Sidney Lowe said. "He wasn't trying to hurt him."
Favors hurt the Wolfpack enough on the stat sheet with 17 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. He also defended Smith on a crucial drive to the basket with 2:13 left, that thwarted State's best chance of re-taking the lead in the waning moments.
"He's big and he's athletic," Smith said of Favors. "It's hard to do something with him when you have skills like that."
It was when the Jackets ignored Favors, who had only two shots in the first 6 minutes of the second half, that N.C. State went from down 29-19 at the half to up 36-33 at 14:18 in the second half.
Gonzalez hit back-to-back 3s and the pro-N.C. State crowd at the Greensboro Coliseum got behind a weary undersized team playing for the third time in three days.
Emotion and desire couldn't help State's shooting problems. The Pack went 6-of-26 from 3-point range and shot just 30.6 percent (19-62) for the game.
Smith went 6-of-13 in scoring his team-best 15 points but Horner (2-12) and Gonzalez (3-14) couldn't find the touch they had in beating Clemson and FSU.
"We just didn't shoot the ball well," Lowe said. "We certainly had the opportunity but we just couldn't finish it off."
This was only the second loss in seven games after State started 2-10 in the ACC. Getting this far, and this close, Smith said, was an accomplishment for a team that began the season pegged for last place.
"Most people thought we were going to lose in the first round but we proved them wrong and kept fighting," Smith said.
At 19-15, Smith hopes State's season is not over. The NIT would be a nice consolation for a strong finish. Smith lingered on the court after the teams exchanged handshakes, not wanting the tournament to end.
"We can't hang our heads," Smith said. "We have to put this behind us and go to the NIT and try to win that."

Sun, 03/14/2010 - 01:04 — duke_blueDamn good game State and a helluva run thru the whole tourney! I believe you proved that you deserve to at least be in the NIT. He11 with that kind of heart and initiative, it would be awesome to see what you guys could have done in the NCAA tourney.
Free throws
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 23:21 — Heels20It hurts to see a team lose this kind of game by missing some early free throws. This was an all around hard-fought game and you hate to see State fall short. Javi's intentional foul hurt, but his play definitely out-weighed that mistake in terms of impact on the game.
It's a robbery if State doesn't make the NIT, but we may as well look forward to next season. Tracy Smith is coming back and Richard Howell has shown he has a bright future. Scott Wood looks like he is not a one-game wonder. Most importantly, Javi Gonzalez will be an excellent Point Guard to ease in Ryan Harrow next season. It's nice to know that Harrow won't have to be thrown in there right away and possibly lose confidence. Javi should be the starter at the beginning of next season.
Sid finally won me over. I went to the Wake game a couple weeks back and saw a team that was running up and down the floor and playing great defense. The Pack was able to carry that over to the remaining games of the season. It looks like the right players are in the system, and barring issues with egos (something that cannot be pre-determined), this will be a team that makes some noise next season.
Agreed all around.
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 00:59 — JPDOhioI just finished posting most of the same stuff in response to Tudor's article.
Javi's intentional foul was so stupid that I had to stop myself from jumping out of my chair at the restaurant we were having dinner at. But that foul was a reaction to frustration that is part of Javi's nature. I have come to accept those moments because they are part of what drives him. Thankfully, he has gotten better as he has minimized those moments.
As you know, I have defended Sid all year. The man can coach and his players seem to have bought in. I don't see ego problems next year, because the leaders will be Tracy and Javi, who are unselfish and hardworking.
Besides, I have enjoyed watching the reaction of the guys on the bench when someone playing their position does well. They are excited and supportive. You seldom saw that before this year.
Anyway, I am looking forward to some NIT action. Last year, I was ready for the season to be over because it was clear that the Pack had quit. Not this year.
The "family" thing.
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 10:18 — PuddentainPart of the reason for unc's successful bball program has been the sense of continuity in the program. NC State had that.
In fact, Everette Case brought the entire sport of basketball in NC to prominance. Norm Sloane followed, and though Valvano wasn't "family", he understood the importance and would have continued it. But when he was forced out, that all went out the door. Les was family, but not a good coach. Herb tried as hard as he could to distance himself from the Wolfpack family. Sid brings that continuity back.
For unc, Frank McQuire picked up the gauntlet laid down by Everette Case, and their program has had the continuity ever since.
Yes Puddentain. I made that
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 21:50 — unc098Yes Puddentain. I made that exact same comment several days ago and got slammed on it by quarters puerile. I would welcome the return of the kind of rivalry we had during stormin Norman.
UNC-98-AKA LOSER!!!
Mon, 03/15/2010 - 15:51 — bluecat69bluecat69HOLES AND WULFPECKERS DO HAVE A RIVALRY, TO SEE WHICH ONE CAN STAY OUT OF THE BOTTOM OF THE ACC, AND ALSO SEE WHICH ONE CAN POSSIBLY WIN A GAME IN THE " nit", GO DUKE WIN THE BIG DANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
No negativity at all
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 20:32 — JPDOhioNot going to parse this one at all. I am extremely happy with the team that showed up this weekend.
UNC098 got it right about the heart State played with this weekend. This is a team with a future. It's too bad it took all year to get there, but better late than never.
And I just hope they did enough to get an NIT bid, because it would be a shame for their season to be over. They should be a lock, but I've learned not to take anything for granted.
Whatever happens, great job in closing out the season guys. This is just the beginning.
I would be surprised if
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 01:04 — unc098I would be surprised if State didn't get an NIT bid mainly because they have caught fire the past few weeks and are playing well. One never knows. It would be really bad if UNC got it and State didn't. I can't imagine what the chat board will be like if that happens.
I believe Sid just bought himself a few more years. He coached masterfully the entire tourney. He had a great plan and adjusted when he needed to. He has really got this team playing the best defense in the league at the moment. This was fun to watch and I am sorry the run is over.
nitology
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 13:06 — gvillegatrhas UNC just outside the NIT! lol.
JPD
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 00:30 — LetsGoPittGreat run for State, and Miami. And Yellow Jackets played two exciting games. Hope they bring their A-game against Duke.
Of the NIT, you think they will bracket State with Sean Miller or Herb Sendek? Would be interesting games.
If they don't....
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 01:02 — JPDOhiothey are absolutely nuts.
Can you imagine Herb returning to RBC to face his replacement? Of course you can.
So can the media-hype driven guys that make these decisions. You can just about bet your house on it.
I have mixed feelings
Sun, 03/14/2010 - 10:03 — PuddentainUnfortunately, just the mention of the name herb sendek is enough to put everyone to zzzzzzzzzzzz...
The Pack played with
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 20:17 — unc098The Pack played with unbelievable heart. Defense was just awesome. Hold your heads up high Packers. This team has come of age. You have a bright future ahead.
By far the best coaching job I have seen out of Sid yet. Javi thought he had to foul on the intentional to keep him from scoring. It got a little out of hand but he kept his cool.
Smith played within himself despite being handicapped earlier. All around great effort.
Rebounding picked up significantly in the second half. They came out with fire in their eyes. I was really looking forward to a Duke/Pack matchup but hey....thanks for the thrills pack.
crash the boards?
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 20:00 — topcat27606No even more basic than that. BLOCK OUT. When GT is shooting free throws they are not doing so well from the line, but guess what….. It is helping them because they are missing the second free throw and even with the Wolfpack in the perfect position to get the rebounds the Jackets are getting half or more of the rebounds in this situation. Let’s see. Follow your shots? Practice and make your free throws? Rebound! I know why Gonzales committed the intentional foul, even though it should have not been done. He was hit by the great Flavors while Favors was trying to steal the ball. Favors swung for the ball and hit him right in the chest with his closed hand. Not really a fist, but a closed hand which caused Gonzales to lose the dribble. Not called of course just like at the end of the game when Degand had the rebound and his arm was grabbed by a GT player and he was pulled to the ground. It would not have mattered as Degand is too scared to drive in the paint and make a basket amongst the big boy under the rim. So it was the missed fouls or what I refer to as not called fouls. The refs see them and have to decide at some point which fouls they are going to call as so many fouls happen these days in College basketball, which is played more like BasketRugby at times. I am a Wolfpack fan so I admit I did not notice the fouls that were not called on the Wolfpack and I know there were many. SO point is that NC State lost because of the basics. Blocking out, Free Throws, Follow your shots and rebound rebound rebound..oh and one more basic REBOUND!!!!!!
The "strategically
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 19:53 — ctillThe "strategically challenged" Paul Hewitt -- as the N&O repeatedly calls him -- makes it to the ACC finals.
Wow that rebounding margin
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 18:09 — unc098Wow that rebounding margin is not good. Got to crash the boards on offense esp.
Some tired legs out there.
Sat, 03/13/2010 - 18:07 — unc098Some tired legs out there. Degand may be the key. Need to do a little Duke offense. Penetrate and dish out to Woods or trailing Smith. Half court game is fine but a little more movement and passing that rock around with some zip wouldn't hurt. Holding the ball to 10 seconds and then trying to make a basket isn't working esp. as tired as the Pack is looking.Keeping the score low is fine but ya gotta score. Defense is good considering the miss match under the basket. The Pack will leave it on the floor the second half.
