ATLANTA -- With Georgia Tech in full panic mode, all that was left for N.C.
State was to make one, final shot that would produce an unlikely ACC
basketball victory for the Wolfpack over the Yellow Jackets.

It didn’t happen for N.C. State, which saw Julius Mays’ 3-pointer bounce away as the buzzer sounded Saturday, giving Georgia Tech a frantic 73-71 victory at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.

The Wolfpack (14-10, 2- 7 ACC) trailed by 16 points – 66-50 – with 5 minutes, 6 seconds remaining. Its offense wasn’t looking much better than it did in an ugly loss Wednesday at Virginia. The only way to salvage this one, coach Sidney Lowe thought, was to use a trapping full-court press on the Yellow Jackets (17-6, 5-4).

It very nearly worked for N.C. State, which created so much havoc from the press that Georgia Tech was either unable to inbounds the ball or, when it did, could barely get it past midcourt.

"When you get a couple of turnovers and scores on some stops and some travels and things, the guys get energized by that," said Lowe. "They talk about it: One more
stop, do it again."

After N.C. State had cut Tech’s lead to 69-57 on two Dennis Horner free throws, the Wolfpack began its press.

Said guard Javier Gonzalez: "We were down 12 with four minutes to go. That’s just three points per minute."

The press immediately produced three straight Yellow Jacket turnovers, resulting in six N.C. State points. It was now 69-63 with 3:04 left.

After Tech’s Zachery Peacock (22 points) made a free throw, the Wolfpack went on another six-point run, thanks to a steal by Horner and two more Tech turnovers.

"They didn’t like it," Gonzalez said of Georgia Tech’s reaction to the press.

Now it was 70-69 with 2:10 remaining. Tech momentarily regained its composure, getting two free throws from Peacock and another by freshman Derrick Favors with 1:04 left for a 73-69 lead.

Two more free throws by Horner, however, cut the lead to 73-71 with 18.1 seconds left. Although the Yellow Jackets got the ball inbounds, the Wolfpack again tied it up and had the possession arrow in its favor with 14.3 seconds remaining.

That set up N.C. State’s final possession. Gonzalez missed a medium-range jumper with about five seconds remaining. The ball kicked out to Mays at the top of the key, but his straight-away 3-pointer missed.

"We panicked," said Georgia Tech coach Paul Hewitt. "We have a saying around our program that a lobbed ball is a loose ball. When you get in those situations,
you use your timeouts and don't lob the ball."

Lowe, whose team got 22 points from Tracy Smith, thought Mays was fouled by Tech's Iman Shumpert on the last shot. Lowe argued vehemently with the referees, so much that he didn’t shake Hewitt's hand on the court. He sought Hewitt out in the locker room afterward, though, to offer his congratulations.

"The heat of the moment got me right there," said Lowe. "I was a little upset at some things. I don't want to talk about the officials, but you all saw it. I guess I can say that
I thought (Mays) got fouled. They didn’t call it, I was a little upset at that and now we move on."

Ga Tech...

is going nowhere this year. I realize some of their talent is young, but it is terrific. It is also undisciplined. I will be shocked if they win more than two games in the NCAA tournament.

makes sense.

they're currently ranked #21 and to win two game in the tourney sorta makes you the 16 best teams in bball.  Wink

Lowe

I think what we saw from Sidney Lowe at the end of the game was an accumulative result. He's probably lost plenty of sleep feeling that he's been shafted by the refs in many games this season...the Wake and UNC games come to mind first, and now this one perhaps. While I agree that State has been treated unfairly by the ACC refs this year, I can't support Lowe's decision to walk off the court without shaking hands...it's not GT's fault that the refs are clueless. When I watched that yesterday, there was a part of me that was almost positive that this might be the end of Sidney Lowe. I figured the media would blow up over it and Swofford would come down with the hammer...who knows, that might still happen. One thing is for sure now though, if we ever had a chance to get a decently called game for the rest of this year, we lost it yesterday. Unfortunately ACC refs' egos are more important to them than the integrity of the game...we've seen this many many times in basketball and football. Good luck Sid, but I think after your actions yesterday, things are only gonna get worse.

Sid is fine.

He was overcome by the moment. He cares about his players and was frustrated that the comeback ended up unsuccessful.

While it was wrong for him to leave the court the way he did, I suspected that he would end up in the Ga Tech locker room congratulating Paul Hewitt. Apparently, he did that.

Sid has acted with class through some tough losses this year, so let's cut him a break on this one.

ditty!!

your  man sid is in the process of self- destructing,ok, why dont u join g-alligator, and both of u-guys become duke fans?? go duke!!!!!!!!!!

I am F'ing tired of you guys

b*tching and moaning about the refs.

While I commend ncsu on the aggressive full court press (and I emphasize the word aggressive!) in the last three minutes yesterday (coincidentally the only 3 mins I saw) they hacked the crap out of GT on every play.

I also realize GT didn't know how to get the ball in either and I commend ncsu on how well they executed their press also.  <----- But most of you guys won't recall this point I made.

But they hacked all the way through it, too.

G-ALLIGATOR!!

i feel your pain, ok, but your problem is that your team is just plain out SORRY, ok go DUKE1

No problem

This loss didn't bother me as much as some others because Ga Tech generally has played well at home and I didn't think the Pack had a chance. The comeback in the last 5 minutes was unbelievable. Too bad Javi or Julius couldn't hit those last shots to finish it, but that doesn't undo the amazing comeback they made.

Many positives to take away from this one:

1. Scott Wood got more shots and got hot for a stretch. They need to keep working to get him open for quick shots, because State needs his scoring.

2. I get nervous every time Josh Davis gets his hands on the ball, because he is like a bull in a china shop. But his enegy is contagious and he acquitted himself well. His free throw shooting has improved tremendously, which is a credit to his obvious work ethic.

3. Keep Howell in the starting lineup. Even though he didn't score, he rebounds and is a positive force on the floor.

4. Bring Horner off the bench. He frustrates me with every miss of an open look from three point range, but he hit his free throws at the end of the game and contributed to the comeback.

5. Whatever Javi did to get in Sid's doghouse, I hope he is out of it. We need his aggressiveness and scoring threat on the floor. I have concluded that I will accept his turnovers, because he needs to push the action.

Fouls

Looks like they missed a couple during the last sequence: foul by State on rebound and foul by GT during last shot? Neither called. Seemed like they (refs) were determined to not try and affect the outcome. Bottom line, Javi had a grand, uncontested shot he should have made to tie it up. Uncharacteristic.

Away game

That's what happens when they play outside a couple hundred mile radius.

I was wondering about Farnold Degand too, although maybe that was explained before the game started in my area (coverage was delayed on ESPN Full Court because the previous game went into overtime).

Hopefully, there will be a new article posted tomorrow with more depth to it.

Boring post

Not even one sentence noting Sidney Lowe's actions at the end of the game?

Ah, finally today you guys

Ah, finally today you guys mention something about it.
