Holtz: Syracuse report 'inaccurate'

Bookmark and Share

Updated 5:20 p.m.

ECU football coach Skip Holtz, in Charlotte on Sunday afternoon, called reports that he has agreed to become the next coach at Syracuse “inaccurate.”

Holtz, who does not have an agent, said he had not spoken with anyone at Syracuse about the job but did not rule the possibility of meeting with Orange athletics director Daryl Gross on Monday in New York. ESPN, on its ticker, reported Sunday that Holtz’ father, Lou, said there would be a meeting between his son and Orange officials.

"I have not met with them at this point, from a formal standpoint," Skip Holtz said Sunday. "The reports are inaccurate."

Efforts to reach  ECU athletics director Terry Holland and Gross by the N&O were unsuccessful late Sunday afternoon

Holtz, Holland and Gross are scheduled to be in New York on Monday to attend the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame ceremonies. Lou Holtz, a former N.C. State and Notre Dame coach, will be inducted. So will be former Syracuse star quarterback Don McPherson.

Skip Holtz has been linked to the Syracuse opening for more than a week. The school recently released Greg Robinson from the job.

A Syracuse, N.Y. television station, citing an NFL Network report, said Holtz would be introduced as Robinson's successor on Monday.

The Pirates, 9-4 overall after Saturday’s 27-24 upset win at Tulsa for the Conference USA title, are scheduled to play in the Jan. 2 Auto Zone Liberty Bowl in Memphis, probably against a SEC opponent. Holtz has a 29-21 four-season record in Greenville after he took over a program that won only three games in two years under John Thompson.

Also mentioned as possible Syracuse targets are Buffalo coach Turner Gill and New York Giants assistant Kevin Gilbride among others.

Skip Holtz was in Charlotte on Sunday to speak at the Bronco Nagurski Award banquet, which is staged annual by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.

It's not ECU, It's the conference

I love rooting for ECU, I think Skip Holtz is a great coach, I believe the points made in this thread about ECU being a great place to coach football is correct. If I were a coach choosing based on just schools and location alone, the easy choice would be ECU. Unfortunately, the decision will involve much more. The conference USA isn't attached to a BCS bowl and the Big East is. ECU is considered a small job on the national radar which means there has to be a another step on the ladder should Skip want a major program. Syracuse fits the criteria for another step up. This is where the ACC should be ashamed. When the league expanded a few years ago, ECU should have been added. There must be something about even number of teams or something. Regardless, if Cuse offers Skip the job he will take it and ECU fans shouldn't feel slighted or dogged because we don't view Syracuse a big enough job to leave ECU for. The truth is Syracuse is an anchor of Big East athletics and is a bigger job than it appears on paper. If Skip is hired by Syracuse and he turns that program around, which he will, then the sky is the limit for him. Personally I thought Skip's next job would be in the ACC at Virginia and it could still be a possibility but it seems Al Groh's job is safe at the moment and Syracuse is going to beat them to the punch. Just be glad Clemson didn't come calling, it would have been ashame to see such another promising career ruined in Death Valley. Death Valley was a perfect name for a stadium, Every coach that has coached there has seen their career die.

finally!!

someone comes up with a good enough reason for Skip to leave regardless of the job ... as long as it is to a BCS conference of which he does not coach in right now.

the thing is (and I really feel the majority of ECU fans feel this way) we know he is going to leave.  we just want to see him go somewhere that we feel is a jump, not a lateral move.  thats what all of this fuss is about with exception of the one who guy who comes in here and tells us about the greater Cuse area with all his Finger Lake and literary mess.

Ha Ha!

Some of you seem very confused about what Syracuse and Central New York are actually like.  I offered my observations to give you some information and a perspective that might enlighten you. Sorry I bothered - perhaps you are the hicks that the Tar Heel fans say you are.

BTW: I couldn't care less if we hire Holtz or not. There's lots of good coaches out there, personally I prefer Turner Gill.

WTF

Did the N&O delete one of my comments? How Gay is that? This will probably get deleted to because i used the term "gay" as a derogatory adjective.

Chew on that n&o.

Yes

You used a three-letter word for donkey.

Haven't deleted anything ...

I wasn't calling anyone out in particular. There have been references by different posters during this thread.

I also haven't deleted anything. The only comments I've ever deleted from the blogs have been for vulgarity or ethnic slurs.

Definition of Gay.

"Gay"-bright , lively : brilliant in color. Rachel, how can you jump to such a conclusion as to how the writer was trying to use the word. The use of "gay" is perfectally acceptable in describing the color purple. Please don't interject your sensorship and quick rush to judgement.

why not??

they (The N & D) do it all the time on the front page articles of this site.

Not a done deal

So Politically Correct Rachel!

No doubt were you went to school. Another bleeding liberal from Chapel Hill.

So, by extension

conservatives support insulting people?

Watch your comments

Hey y'all,

We love that you're fired up and please continue the discussion.

However, cool it with the word "gay" as a derogatory adjective. There's no need for it.

Thanks.

Tell me, do you folks

always engage in such internecine warfare?

lol.

never in a million years did I think i'd run across the word "intercine" at the ACCBlog!!  i guess I can call out B-I-N-G-O!

yes

we do.

wishful thinking "big 3" fans

Everyone knows the "big 3" fans and the ACC/BCS centric masters of unjustified conceit in the triangle media are terrified of an ECU in the big east scenario. Will Holtz go to SU? I doubt it...why would he? They aren't going to pay him significantly more, it does nothing for his resume, and coaching at the likes of Syracuse isn't one of his goals. He loves Greenville, there is no pressure to win 9+ games every year, his family is happy, he makes over 1m a year and if he wins at ECU he gets just as much credit nationally as he would at Syracuse. His next job will be at Notre Dame or a major player in the SEC. I know the "big 3" fans think that any BCS coaching position is better than coaching at ECU, but that just isn't the case. I'm still laughing at Tudor and his "big Sweat" article. Really? How many coaches has ECU lost to BCS programs? 1? Big sweat indeed. It's just one more unneeded piece of evidence on the Mt Everest of innuendo, selective reporting and spin created over the years by the N and O's "crack" (trust me, I mean that.....really) staff in their effort minimize ECU's successes while focusing on the negative. Remember the idiotic "friday night" fiasco? Guess who plays on Friday nights now? Not a peep out of the N and O; I wish I could say I was surprised. So, keep it up "big 3" delusionists...even if Skip does leave, ECU will reload with another excellent coach. Why? Because ECU is a great place to coach football for all of the reason mentioned previously.

skip

everyone knows Skip will leave in the next few years. No one wants to see him leave for a crappy job like Syracuse. thats all it is. hate ECU, show affection for your region where you grew up ... I dont care. just admit Syracuse football, right now, is a dump.

Right now, yes it is. But

Right now, yes it is. But ECU football was a dump when he took that over as well. If he turned ECU around, then he can likely do the same with a much more historically prestigious Syracuse program.

I dunno.

we'll just have to see.  Robinson was hired in '04, I believe, and Pasquilani (msp) was slumping late in his career.  Pasqualani was a good coach too.  I seriously doubt he simply forgot how to coach football prior to him leaving or getting fired.

nobody but an Urban Meyer or a Nick Saban or a Pete Carroll could change Syracuse around and get them back to what you guys want.  (and they ain't coming!)

it truly is as simple as the cold weather factor.  young men (boys) simply want to chase half naked ladies around all year long ... or did you forget about that!? <---for you fellas in denial about the state of syracuse football and thinking it will turn around soon.

Then how do you explain how

Then how do you explain how well schools like UCONN or Boise State are doing? There's a lot of talent in the northeast, all SU needs is a great recruiter again.

yo

the success of UCant??  who do they ever beat OOC??

last year they beat only DUIke and lost to UVa and WFU.  not to mention their tape measure game at, WVa, was a loss, 66-21.

they had a worse record this year at 7-5 (3-4) but were able to beat UVa ... whose 1 of  2 teams not going bowling in the ACC!

UCant will never strike fear into anyone.  thye play in a mid-major conference ... the same one a terrible washington st esq team does in Syracuse.

you need a geography lesson if you think Boise St is in the NE.  more like the NW.  Boise has three things going for them.  1.) California recruiting.  2.) a gimmick offense, although it is not quite as gimmick as it used to be.  3.) superior coaching.  and when I say superior coaching i'm talking about within the conference.  Although, Peterson is a wanted man inside BCS conferences.

wtf

I don't see this as a step up for Skip. They must be trying to throw a lot of money at him (as if anything else is obvious). Resume-wise, this would amount to a lateral move for his coaching career. He's built a conference champion that's every bit as competitive in football as State and UNC. I don't see Skip leaving ECU unless Notre Dame fires Charlie Weis down the road and they come knocking on the door.

Have you ever been to Greenville, NC?

No offense, but just thought I would chime in. I see that people saying what are the "freakin finger lakes and the region... gateway to nowhere." Take a look at Greenville, NC... Pretty depressing and ugly town on the nasty Tar River.   Greenville, NC is just a hick town with a halfway decent hospital which is halfway between the prominent and bustling Research Triangle Area with its great Universities and the beautiful outerbanks and coast of NC.  There are some pretty uneducated ECU fans on here I see. Typical.... Same fans that call the Tar Heels... "Queer holes" and things like "Smurfs." Have you ever seen a team wear purple uniforms before? NOw that is pretty freakin gay. Bottom line is ECU is just a mid major football program that gets up for one or two big games per year. If a coach brings them a few wins, then the coach will go to a more prominent conference school like the ACC, Big East, etc. Holtz may or may not go to Syracuse but he will go somewhere, sometime. That's a guarantee. Sorry NY people for the bad rap you are getting from some uneducated ECU fans. The ACC schools in NC outclass and outshine EZU anytime.   Sorry you have to get comments like these from the purple fans.

No offense eh?

And then you proceed to offend...typical.  Well...since facts don't seem to come in to play when you comment NewEnglandHeel ( must be the A you got in "How to sound like an arrogant, entitled jerk 101"), a more balanced view is in order.  While Greenville will never be mistaken for a tourist destination, it's no dump either.  The EVIDENCE shows that coaches who choose to take positions at ECU are pretty happy, so there must be something positive about the area.  Greenville is a mid sized town in a rural area which has much to offer to those who prefer small college town living to bustling cities.  Apparently this is beyond your comprehension, but some people prefer that.  The reason you get called names...and don't pretend that UNC doesn't have one of the most hated fan-bases in the country, is because of the unbelievably arrogant attitude and culture of "passive insults" and back-handed compliments exhibited by a sizable portion of your fan base.  Here is a new's flash for you genius, treat others with respect and you will be treated with respect.  No one likes a braggart or a blow-hard and the UNC fan base has those two behaviors refined to an art form.  Next time you don't mean to offend....er....don't be offensive.

Big Mistake

Syracuse is ancient football history, the town surrounds one of the most polluted lakes in the country and is part of the Rust Belt. Holtz would be crazy to go to work for the absolutely worst AD in college sports Daryl Gross.

PS: Your

characterization of Dr. Gross as the "worst AD" is so far off base it doesn't deserve a comment.

Actually,Onondaga

Lake is making a speedy recovery and is well on its way to being clean once again. Plus, as I mentioned earlier, the city of Syracuse lies at the eastern edge of the Finger Lakes Region - one of the most beautiful areas in the world. If you don't think so, try visiting sometime. The bad wrap the Syracuse area takes is often from people who have never been here. As a footnote, it is also a vibrant intellectual region, with Cornell, Colgate, Univ. of Rochester, Hamilton College, Binghamton Univ.  and of course SU, complementing all the SUNY schools  that are in Central New York.

So we get snow - big deal.  We don't have hurricanes, tornadoes, wild fires, earthquakes etc. I'll take that anyday!

You can have your snow

Our hurricanes and tornadoes don't last six months out of the year, every day, every year.

I'll take Lake Lure over the Finger Lakes anyday.  I've seen them both.

Our snow

doesn't last six months either. That's a really dumb observation. And if your prefer Lake Lure, fine I hope you enjoy it. I'm not knocking Carolina - I'm sure it's beautiful - just don't knock CNY, it's beautiful too. Get it?

So do us a favor

Get off this message board, and go get your job of destiny with the Syracuse Football Pantheon/Finger Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce.

And Lord knows, you wouldn't be able to withstand a little hurricane every once in a while. Especially since it has to be a toasty, climate-controlled 73 degrees for your fans to watch a freakin' football game.

My My

we're touchy tonight aren't we?

...and meanwhile ECU fans

...and meanwhile ECU fans are decked out in their northfaces and scarves when the temperature drops below 60.

...and meanwhile UNC fans

are decked out as aluminum bleachers.

Yeah, that's why we're

Yeah, that's why we're gonna sell out the Car Care Bowl again this year. With the exception of the 12:00, rainy BC game UNC has had sellout or near-sellout crowds pretty much all year.

And it could be worse: we could be going to the games in camoflauged onesies (cough STATE cough).

CAMO

hahaha. so true
I went to a NC State game this year and their was 4 guys sitting a couple rows in front of me wearing camoflauged onesies..

Lateral move

Why leave UConn to go right back up north to Cuse. Bring back Steve Logan and the quick kick.

Because

Syracuse is not UConn. The guy who returns Syracuse to its proper place in the CF pantheon, will be a hot comodity should he choose to leave. MacPherson did it and left to coach the NE Patriots!

Give me a break

The Carrier Dome is the gayest stadium in existence. Football was meant to be played outdoors.

geirgo

That's your opinion.

Holtz

Sorry folks, but Syracuse has a much, much finer pedigree than ECU. 14th winingest program all time, (was top ten till Robinson arrived), ton's of bowl games, a national championship, some of the best pro players ever, Jim Brown, Donovan McNabb, Marvin Harrison, Dwight Freeney, John Mackey, Floyd Little, Larry Csonka, Jim Ringo, and on and on. Superb academic reputation, only indoor, campus stadium, (never gets cold in the Dome). City located at the eastern gateway to the gorgeous Finger Lakes region. They may be down at the moment, but can recruit with any of the teams mentioned above. No reason this team can't be turned around in short order.

Fingers Lake!?

what the hell is the Fingers Lake region??????  I'd like to give you the, well, you know!  lol.  you crack me up.  Syracuse is the "gateway" to fricking nowhere.  your prgram is and will continue to be a dump in football.  go reminisce about your tradition b/c that is all you will ever have!

Is your anger

clouding your reasoning, or are you like this when you're sober as well?

Gatr,  I hope you don't

Gatr,

I hope you don't go to ECU because you would be an embarassment to their academic reputation. If you have never heard of the Finger Lakes region, it woudn't surprise me if you are one of those Americans who can't find California on a map.

And if you haven't heard of Syracuse's great tradition, it wouldn't surprise me if you were 12.

Yankee??

ive been to every state in the union with exception to Minnesota, North Dakota and the Northeast Region above NYC.

who hasnt heard of Suckacuse' history.  but thats all it is, history.  it appears you are from that area.  why dont you go back.

Well Said Gatr!

Well Said Gatr!

Bwahahhahahahhha

Hilarious

Skip Holtz

We don't want him either!!!

You're crazy if you don't

You're crazy if you don't want him.  look at what he's done for our school in 4 years.

stupid

you're an idiot then.
