Given the path of Lou Holtz's coaching career — six college stops in 35 years — this was bound to happen. Look at N.C. State's first two games: Holtz coached all three teams — William & Mary from 1969-71, N.C. State from 1972-75 and South Carolina from 1999-2004.
The old pep-talkin' coach took a trip down memory lane with Ken Tysiac to compare N.C. State and South Carolina, even offer his prediction (Gamecocks).
If you expand the Holtz umbrella to his son, Skip, you have a certified Holtz Invitational this season in the Triangle.
Besides, South Carolina and William & Mary, N.C. State plays Skip's ECU team on Sept. 20.
Even UNC gets in the act. The Tar Heels host UConn, Skip's team from 1994-98, on Oct. 4 and Notre Dame, Lou's team from 1986-96, on Oct. 11.
Sadly, Minnesota and Arkansas, Lou's other two college teams, don't play each other.
