Holtz impressed with UNC

Lou Holtz said it didn't matter whether Notre Dame was 11-0 or 0-11.

Regardless of the record, former Notre Dame coach Holtz said opposing teams and fans always were highly motivated when the Irish played a road game. Notre Dame plays at North Carolina on Saturday against a Tar Heel team ranked No. 22 in the nation.

Both teams are 4-1.

(Notre Dame actually has never been 0-11 in football, but Holtz was trying to make a point).

"North Carolina has really impressed me this year," said Holtz, who now works as an ESPN analyst. "I think Butch Davis has done an excellent job. They're playing very physical. Despite losing their quarterback, to lose T.J. Yates [hurt], but they have [Cameron] Sexton playing so well. It should be a fine game."

Holtz said that Notre Dame eventually will return to elite status in college football after going 3-9 last season. But Holtz said the current team is good, but not great. That won't stop North Carolina from considering this a marquee win if it manages to defeat the Irish.

But Holtz predicted that Notre Dame will be motivated, too.

"As motivating as it is to play against Notre Dame, I found it was even more motivating to play for Notre Dame," he said.

Play Like a Champion Today

The baby blue sign will only fire up the Irish.  It is a copyrighted image.  Typical UNC.  Banners for runners up in basketball, now this. GO IRISH!

ND vs UNC

Go Irish! Should be a good game against two very evenly matched teams. UNC is all about the run and the Irish are a passing team. Still both teams to do a little of both. ND needs to get their running game going to take pressure off Jimmy Clausen. Despite doing much better this year I think an offense needs to be more versatile. For UNC they have done well with a backup quarterback. I hope for ND's sake it doesnt come down to a FG...can we throw it over the uprights instead of kicking it?

Defining Game

I see this as being an excellent game between two universities with great sports traditions. Both schools need this game as a springboard to an eventual bowl game. I wish the Tarheels the best on their season, but have to cheer for the Irish to bring this one home. GO IRISH!!

Realistic thinking...

I'm looking very forward to going with my good friend who was born and bred in South Bend, Indiana. There will be some ribbing, I'm sure. By the end of the day I only hope each of us will say the day was nice. A Tar Heel victory, without question, will be the icing on a cake of a day.
