ACC Now

Hokies still remember

GREENSBORO, Ga. — Sean Glennon isn't about to forget the 32 members of the Virginia Tech community who were killed in a shooting massacre on campus in April 2007. The Hokies senior quarterback wears two silicone wristbands marked with the number "32."

"We still think about it but not as quite on a daily basis as we used to," said Glennon, who went to the same high school as gunman Seung Hui Cho.

The aftermath of the tragedy and buildup to the first football game became a central theme to Virginia Tech's 2007 season. The topic rarely came up on Sunday at the ACC Kickoff.

"It was different last year when I'm talking to [the media] and [they're ] not asking questions about football," Glennon said.

The fallout from the massacre and the emotions of the community were difficult to harness, Glennon said. Through a sports prism, it was played up as motivation for Virginia Tech — which Glennon said it was inspirational — but it also was a distraction.

"There was so much buildup to the ECU game, I don't want to use it as an excuse for why we didn't play well, but it was a distraction but not in a bad way," Glennon said. "I do think winning the ACC championship helped with the community."
