Butch Davis loves Miami again.
Davis' old team dropped the Hokies to 3-3 in the ACC. UNC, 3-2, would win the division and play for the ACC title if the Tar Heels can win their final three games.
The Heels play at Maryland on Saturday and then finish with their Triangle neighbors — N.C. State on Nov. 22 and at Duke on Nov. 29.
If UNC falters, Miami, which has won five straight games, would control the Coastal. Miami travels to Georgia Tech next Thursday and closes at N.C. State on Nov. 29.
Virginia Tech, which lost its first division game, would get new life if UNC and Miami (4-2 in the ACC) lose.
The Canes turned three big breaks into their first win over Virginia Tech in three tries. Miami fumbled twice inside the 5-yard line, going into the end zone, but recovered it each time, leading to 10 points, and Virginia Tech's Dyrell Roberts dropped a long pass in the fourth quarter that looked like a touchdown.
Virginia Tech, which won the ACC 2004 and 2007, closes with Duke (Nov. 22) and Virginia (Nov. 29). Both games are in Blacksburg, where the Hokies are 4-0.
