The three Triangle-area men's basketball teams that capture the nation’s attention are among the national leaders in the classroom according to NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) data released Wednesday afternoon.

N.C. State led all ACC men’s basketball teams with a score of 995 out of a possible 1,000. The APR measures the total progress toward graduation of athletes on each team at each Division I schools. A 925 is considered a passing score.

School athletics officials said N.C. State's strong showing in the classroom is partly due to coach Sidney Lowe’s efforts to keep players in school after he took over for Herb Sendek in 2006.

Coaching changes often are followed by an exodus of players who transfer to other schools, but that didn’t happen at N.C. State.

"I think academically when Herb left they were in pretty good shape, and Sidney has done a good job of trying to maintain kids in school," said N.C. State athletics director Lee Fowler.

The men's basketball teams at Duke and North Carolina scored 989 on the APR. The three Triangle teams were the only men's basketball teams in the ACC to receive public recognition awards from the NCAA for their high APR scores.

North Carolina's honor comes a month after the Tar Heels won the NCAA title with a win over Michigan State in the national final in Detroit.

"It further shows for us that we're doing things the right way and that across the board we're pretty competitive in playing, and now this is just another measure that shows that we're doing the right things academically," said North Carolina sports information director Steve Kirschner.

Also receiving public recognition in men's basketball were Davidson with a perfect score of 1,000 and Winthrop with a 986. South Carolina was among 42 Division I men's basketball teams to receive a scholarship penalty for a low APR.

The Gamecocks were penalized one scholarship as one of four SEC men's basketball teams to receive penalties. Georgia Tech, which lost two scholarships, was the only ACC men's basketball team penalized.

About JIWS.....

"I couldnt figure out where you sounder more dumb, on the radio or in here."
gatr, I have always given jiws credit for sounding brighter on the radio. That is a "no brainer".

i'll give him credit

at least he does have the ol southern drawl.

NCSU can thank Herb

I can't fathom Lowe being the reason NCSU has performed so well on this SINGULAR metric. But then maybe he did share HIS SECRET of how to get NINE semester credits OVERNIGHT from an online insititution of lower learning.

And Ken, this is a bit OVER THE EDGE don't you think: "The three Triangle-area men's basketball teams that capture the nation’s attention". I doubt even WOOFERS would agree with you on that remark. If it were for UNC and Duke, NCSU would not even be thought of.

Nope, try again

Herb was the coach for 10 years there and NCSU always had a poor APR and graduation rate.

Just b/c Herb was smart did not mean he could care about his players' education. Just b/c Sidney got a online degree doesn't mean he can't enforce his players to get their degrees.

Good Job

The ACC gets it done both on the court and in the classroom. Believe me the papers up here cram down the fact BC graduates 93% of their athletes. Nice to see the rest of the conference step up too.

Application battle?

I heard NCSU had more in state applications than UNC over the last couple years. That is, more North Carolina High School students wanted to go to NCSU than UNC. I will try to find the stats.

Another perspective Will

Willncsu, when you find those stats look right beneath them. You will find that annually the MOST # of transfers from any ONE school to another school are NCSUers applying to xfer to UNC.

Second thought also. Most NCians want to go to UNC so they apply to UNC and then to NCSU as a backup. Those who want to go to NCSU ONLY apply to NCSU. But then I can understand your distorted view of how the world REALLY is given your fanbase's jealousy of UNC.

class

Your subjectivity is right in line with your liberal arts education and multiple choice mindset.  Please keep the speculation to those who elicit credibility.

Thanks

NCSU '05

You, my friend, are an

You, my friend, are an idiot.  Most North Carolinians do not apply for UNC.  Most North Carolinians drop out of high school and go to Walmart for their tar heel apparel needs.

the ironic thing about wal mart

is, it is where all my beloved country folk shop and they are all ncsu fans.  it makes me laugh when ncsu fans, here or on the radio, talk about UNC and wal-mart.

yet when you walk into a wal mart all you see is people wearing ncsu garb covered in camoflauge and the like.

go figure.  you people are so dam* envious!

The NCSU administration should be happy

They will not see a need to change things since they money is rolling in and the players are graduating. I mean it's not like you can have a high APR and win national titles at the same time...oh wait...

Oh wait...

Duke?

You're right, THF, the

You're right, THF, the structure of accountability is pretty weak at State. Other than that whole "winning" thing, what's to keep the administration from looking at the balance sheet of the athetic department and the APR report cards and saying "Good job, Lee."

I bet the shortsighted fools of Oblinger and Co. are eating this up.

I don't want to diminsh the accomplishment in any way; it's fantastic news that Sidney's keeping his players on track and in good standing.

But let's be honest -- an athletic department that isn't winning isn't serving its intended purpose; that is, as an effective public relations/marketing department. As Mike Singletary says, "I WANT WINNERS." So do the best and brightest high school students across America. If you're not winning, you're not winning the battle for the hearts and minds of these kids and therefore losing the battle for the best students in the state, region and country.

Carolina's winning titles. They're winning the application battle, as well. It's high time Oblinger get his head out of his @$$ and realize it.

Where to start?

Predictably, a positive report encompassing the big three in the Triangle has devolved into the usual p*ss**g contest. Sad and compelling at the same time.

First, congratulations to all 3 schools. Commitment to results in academics is essential, so well done by all staff involved. This is vitally important to the schools mission and, yes, to parents of recruits who have their heads on straight.

Regarding winning, the Mike Singeltary quote is relevant, because it is not followed by "at all costs". He demands effort and team focus. Last time I looked, TOB and Sid were all about this.

And its not like State isn't heading in the right direction. Football is progressing quicker that Hoops, but that is no surprise. Sid had some adjusting to do when he started out and made some mistakes along the way that I think he has learned from.

State hoops fans are frustrated and I can't blame them. But take a look at the recruits Sid has in hand as well as those he has had a shot at. Not Duke/UNC quality, but not bad. News flash- State is not going to get Duke/UNC quality recruits in quantity. They will get some, but not as many. I think Sid knows what he wants to do and, with time, will succeed at it. And start "Winning".

And, while we are indicting the "losing" athletic department, what about the two recent national champions in wrestling and diving, not to mention consistently strong cross country and track teams. A lot goes on in the athletic department besides football and basketball, all of which matter to the AD and President of the University. Unlike fans who focus on the two major sports, they have a responsibility to the entire college community and have to balance competing priorities every day.

Perhaps the solution is to hire someone from the Steinbrenner organization to consult on spending money recklessly to buy championships. Coaches who don't win championships every year can be fired, but at least money can be diverted from other sports activities and facilities to fund the buyouts. I am sure that would attract "the best and the brightest."

Yes, a lot goes on in the Athletic Department

Kudos to N.C. State's cross country, track, wrestling, and diving teams for their success.  And to the rest of the university teams for competing at their best and representing the university well.

However, your implication that because there is a lot more than basketball and football in the overall athletic program, the AD and President of the University might have reason to be happy with overall results, consider the latest Director's Cup standings (as of April 9):

(2) UNC-CH
(9) Florida State
(13) Virginia
(17) Maryland
(19) Duke
(33) Wake Forest
(44) Virginia Tech
(48) Miami
(50) Boston College
(64) Clemson
(73) Georgia Tech
(78) NC State

Yep, that's N.C. State last in the standings.  Now consider N.C. State's performances throughout Fowler's tenure:

2008-09 - #78
2007-08 - #56
2006-07 - #44
2005-06 - #34
2004-05 - #51
2003-04 - #39
2002-03 - #43
2001-02 - #46
2000-01 - #56

Note the declining trend - this is the third straight year N.C. State has dropped.  This despite superlative fundraising and continual improvement in facilities.

Lee Fowler is a poor AD IMO and he has been at N.C. State long enough.  Winning isn't everything, but it should certainly matter, and N.C. State has not performed well enough in that area during Fowler's tenure to justify him continuing in his role.

Note:  Great article on this at http://www.statefansnation.com/index.php/archives/2009/04/14/directors-cup-update-wolfpack-dead-last-in-acc/

Thanks for that.

Your point is well taken. I obviously didn't take the time to research the overall results, and I can't (and won't) argue with your conclusion, which is well documented.

My main issue was implication that the entire athletic department is made up of losers (not "Winners"). Last place notwithstanding, there are some proud and productive programs that should not be painted with such a broad brush.

JPD, I wasn't necessarily

JPD, I wasn't necessarily calling the entire athletic department losers by referencing the Singletary quote. I was simply referencing it to say that people in general -- and specifically elite high school students in this instance -- want to be associated with "winners."

Right now, it's hard to argue that State's performance overall athletically, and in particular in the revenue sports, casts us in a "winning" light. Having an entire generation of in-state kids grow up never knowing State in a "winning" sense can have damaging repercussions when it comes to landing the best and brightest from the state.

Not to mention the damaging effect constant losing has on the morale of current students and money-giving alums.

Not to mention...

Those of us who try (mostly unsuccessfully) to put a positive spin on the situation.

Domination

Dont forget that our Bass Fishing and Riflery teams dominate!

the light?

I guess you found the light after writing your piece above.  still, though ...

in all fairness though

In order to place higher wouldn't state have to magically grow a field hockey and lacrosse teams? And State has at least 2 programs, gymnastics and rifle, which win their conference titles but those are sports not recognized in the AD cup and ACC.

In fact, I want to say GT doesn't even have wrestling or women's soccer and that's why they are consistently dead last -- they put up a "no score" in more categories than the other ACC schools.

but to slip in 3 straight years is inexcusable

The Right Way?

"It further shows for us that we're doing things the right way and that across the board we're pretty competitive in playing, and now this is just another measure that shows that we're doing the right things academically," said North Carolina sports information director Steve Kirschner.

Actually, Steve, when over 80% of your overall student body can cakewalk their way to As and Bs...

http://www.newsobserver.com/1366/story/568347.html

...and your basketball team STILL gets beat out in the APR by a team from a technical institution, it means that your athletes are even stupider than they appear in their postgame interviews.

James

I couldnt figure out where you sounder more dumb, on the radio or in here.

After this entry it is clearly here.

Where is your justification in writing this?  Not only does UNC get it done in the classroom but they clearly get it done on the court, too.

I knew you or madmax, one, would derail this fluff piece.

No one gives two craps about what these kids do in school other than, hopefully, getting their diplomas and excelling on the hard court.   ncsu doesn't and has not done anything with any consistency on the court in over 20 years.  I guess it was so they could beat UNC by 6 pts, based off a maximum of 1,000 pts, in the classroom!

that comes out to a slightly better than .5 pts.  WOW!

MOM & DAD

"No one gives two craps about what these kids do in school ..."?  James, try Mom & Dad!

bob

depending on how old you are, did you really give a crap how your buddy graduated from school??  does it matter to you that he passed with a "C" avg or whether he passed with an "A" avg?  I highly doubt it.  All you cared about is that he graduated.

now, think about someone you dont even know on a personal level but saw them excel inside your school.  do you feel or have more concern for that person??  nope.  but, you do, in the end, hope they at least graduated, too.

no one cares how you started the race or got through the race.  just as long as you finished the race.

Gator, my personal goal

Gator, my personal goal while I was at State was to finish peroid.  I'll give you credit for that analysis.  I had plenty of motivation.  When I was enrolled, the US was giving all expense paid trips to SE Asia.  I did finish in 4 and found a home in the Nat'l Gd.  Now, I am the parent of a 19 year-old rising Soph. @ my Alma Mater.  I probably have spent more on her 1 yr of education as my parents and I spent on my 4.  I certainly did not send her with just the idea of eventually graduating.  I want my money's worth.  Her 3.25 is not perfect but I'll take it any day.Mom & I are happy.  Yet if you are going to run the race, run to win.  No one remembers who finished 2nd.  Tell a mom & dad how the coach @ Ga. Tech valued his son's attempt to graduate.

My apologies, James.

My

I hear ya, Bob

and I'm happy for your daughter.  a 3.25 g.p.a. is very commendable and she doesnt get 1/10 of what these athletes get as far as access to achieve a degree, so I feel sorry for no student-athelete who can't graduate ... including the ones at Ga Tech!

kudos to ncsu, DUIke and UNC for achieving such great success in the classroom!

Bob, that was gator that

Bob, that was gator that said that, not I.

^ I'll just let this post

^ I'll just let this post speak for itself.

ha!

b/c you have no rebuttal is why it "speaks for itself."  its your way of hoping someone thinks you have a point.

I hope State Fans give

I hope State Fans give Sydney Lowe a lot of credit for instilling the right set of priorities in his players. I am a UNC fan, but I think Coach Lowe is a real class act, and I hope State Fans will have patience with him.

The Best Recruiting Tool Possible!

Congrats to Sidney & his staff as well as to the team.  Now the Pack has even more motivation to stay on top.  What a weapon to carry into a recruit's home!  Give Coach Lowe time to build his program and winning results will follow.  Who needs a One & Done Wonder?  GO PacK!!!

You almost had me, but you

You almost had me, but you poured on the sarcasm a little too thick at the end to make it believable.

That, and your post's headline pushed it over the edge.

sbas2

way to go Coach Lowe and the men who make up the basketball team. something to be very proud of. and thanks for the hard work in the class room.

Good job Sidney!!

It's good be proud of some aspect of our program given the hard times on the court. And leading the ACC in APR is certainly something to applaud.

Keep up the good work Pack! This was an aspect many questioned Sidney understood/would be good in, but now we see (and even pleasantly surprised) he can get the job done where it'll really matter for these kids - in the classroom.
