Heels under scholarship limit

Bookmark and Share

UNC has gone from a shortage of football scholarships to a surplus.

Kicker Jay Wooten has decided to transfer and three recruits will enroll in prep school. What was once a 17-scholarship discrepancy is now a three-scholarship surplus for Tar Heels coach Butch Davis.

Wooten, who made 4-of-6 field-goal attempts and 11 extra points as a redshirt-freshman, shared the kicking responsibilities with Casey Barth in 2008. The school announced he was leaving the program on Monday, giving them 26 available scholarships.

Recruits Justin Dixon, J.R. Rhodes and Johnnie Farms are expected to enroll at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Va., which means what was once an incoming class of 29 is down to 23.

Smithfield-Selma coach Anthony Barbour said Monday that Dixon, a linebacker, was going to Hargrave. Scout.com reported Farms, a guard from Georgia, will enroll at Hargrave because of academic reasons.

Mike Briggs, Rhodes' coach at Durham Jordan, said Monday that the running back did qualify academically but will opt to go to Hargrave for a semester.

A fourth recruit, cornerback D.J. Bunn from Smithfield-Selma, is still waiting for a decision on his academic status, Barbour said.

Twenty of the recruits who signed in February are enrolled in summer school, a UNC spokesman said Monday. The NCAA allows a maximum of 25 players to enroll from one recruiting class but does not limit the number of players that can be signed.

Have you seen the latest?

I checked earlier and 5 incoming players will prep or not enroll  (juco transfer). I sure hope the ones coming are ready to play. BTW, is it a done deal Tate is going MLB? I heard his agent may have him asking for an unsignable amount, and he would be college bound. Any concrete info appreciated.

youngest

If they keep this up they can still claim to be the youngest team in the ACC every year. LOL...

"I hope all the readers

"I hope all the readers (probably State fans) that raised a ruckus about Butch targeting more scholarships than they actually had to offer last year take note of this. That's the way it works a lot of the time." Yeah it's COMPLETELY normal for a kid to qualify academically and then decide not to go to college. I'm sure that was his decision. How come the author of this article doesn't give the reasons for why the playser were "released" or "dismissed" or point out that some of these kids with "medical hardships" are actually going to go play at another institution. Which would seem to me they don't actually have medical hardships at all. I guess the Chief did one of his Scholarship Dances so that he could magically make room for his new players. Maybe we should start calling him the Rain Man.

recpie

thats your recipe.  you've taken every story ever typed up by jpg (about this) and thrown it together!  get your facts straight.

people that qualified to go to college made it to college and then did something to not get their scholly renewed.  i.e. get in trouble of sorts.

medical hardships are a bad thing, but good for the football team.  what good is a guy who cant play, wasting a jersey.  he still gets his education.  ncsu has done the same thing.

Yep. If you over-recruit, you can eventually run off enough players to get the numbers to work. You UNC-ch fans have a lot to be proud of in Butch Davis.

Seriously.

UNC has

a balance system and will continue to explore the talent available to be bowl bound again in 2009. Other guys in waiting know it their time to step up. I believe they will prevail for reasonable winning season. I predict a 9-3 season and nothing less than 7-5. The schedule has the old school teams like Citadel and Georgia Southern which Carolina should win in a landslide if the defense lives up to expectations.

good one, i knew it came from somewhere, i was just too little back then to remember (i just remember Mr. T), but he said it all the time.

B.A. simply didnt like to fly!

Plus

Every single line uttered by B.A. on the show had the word "fool" in it.

i'm reminded of my dad saying: "i love it when a plan comes together."
