RALEIGH — North Carolina beat N.C. State, again, on Tuesday for the 12th straight time.

The end result was the same for the Tar Heels, who have won 18 of 19 games in the series under coach Roy Williams, but the 86-74 road win had a different feel from previous meetings.

For one, the Tar Heels got a career-high 22 points from pass-first point guard Kendall Marshall, to keep them in a first-place tie in the ACC race and to keep the Wolfpack without a scalp for its NCAA tournament profile.

Marshall added his usual 13 assists — without a turnover — notably finding forward Harrison Barnes for 20 points, but it was Marshall's shooting touch which gave the Heels (24-4, 11-2 ACC) an unusual win, and caught the Wolfpack (18-10, 7-6 ACC) off guard.

"I didn't know he could shoot like that," said Wolfpack guard Lorenzo Brown, who scored 18 points. "I guess he has been in the gym lately."

As a team, UNC made 10 of 19 from 3-point range, the most it has made in an ACC game this season and its best percentage (52.6) since going 11 of 18 at kentucky on Dec. 3.

“Those of you who have seen us play a lot this year, we keep talking about the nights when we shoot the ball in the hole, we can be really good," Williams said. "And I thought we shot it the best we’ve shot it all year long.”

Marshall established a new career-best with four 3-pointers. He hadn't hit more than two 3s in a game before Tuesday. He had three in the first half. It was the shooting, combined with the 13-0 assist-to-turnover ratio, which caused Williams to call his point guard's performance, over 38 minutes, "phenomenal."

The game was also different because N.C. State forward C.J. Leslie found success inside against UNC's long-armed shot-blocker, John Henson. Leslie scored a career-high 24 points, 14 in the first half, with several baskets at Henson's expense. Leslie added 12 rebounds in 29 minutes before fouling out with 90 seconds left in the game.

Leslie and N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried had a brief exchange in the team huddle during the first timeout of the game, because of Leslie's slow start on defense, Gottfried said, but the coach loved how Leslie responded.

Gottfried said Leslie was able to use his quickness and take Henson, who had 18 blocks in the previous three games against the Wolfpack, off the dribble. Leslie thought the reason for his success was more simple.

"I was more focused," Leslie said.

The Pack needed to refocus after UNC jumped out to an early lead, 19-5 in the first 6 minutes. The Pack tied the score at 30 — with an 11-point mini-burst by Leslie — with 7 minutes and 24 seconds left in the first half.

But like the previous 11 games, which the Heels won by an average 16.1 points per game, UNC's talent was too much for the Wolfpack. The Heels kept coming in waves and State ran out of comebacks.

The ebb-and-flow of the loss reminded Gottfried of previous missed opportunities this season against Indiana, Syracuse and Vanderbilt.

"We've got spurts," Gottfried said. "We just can't sustain it long enough."

The Tar Heels had no such problems. They widened their five-point halftime margin to 62-49 at 13:45 in the second half. The Pack responded with six straight points but UNC pounded the ball inside to Tyler Zeller (14 points, eight rebounds) and Henson (14 points, 13 boards), who did finish with two blocks, to create enough space to prevent any end-game drama by the Wolfpack.

N.C. State came up empty in a three-game stretch against the top three teams in the ACC. The Wolfpack gets Miami, a top 50 team in the RPI at home next week, but it will enter the ACC tournament without a win over the Heels or Duke, the top two ACC teams in the RPI.

"We've still got a lot left on the table," Gottfried said.

UNC, meanwhile, has all of its preseason goals in front of them — the ACC title, the national title — as its rounds into postseason form. If Marshall shoots like he did Tuesday, there might not be any stopping the Tar Heels.

Musings

Last night was a fair representation of where each team stands in relation to the other. UNC this year is 12 points better than State. Three things were the difference: (1) Missed layups by State, (2) Missed free throws by State, (3) Kendall Marshall having a career game, especially behind the arc.

Overall, I was happy with the way the Pack responded after the debacle that was FSU last Saturday. I thought Richard Howell played better than he has in a while, even though he still had foul trouble. The difference in his demeanor was obvious. DeShawn Painter was solid in his reserve role. With the exception of Scott Wood and perhaps Alex Johnson, everyone improved over Saturday, which I hope is a trend going into the last 3 regular season games.

4th place is short-term goal now, so that the Pack can get a bye on the first day of the ACC tourney. Their chances of getting an NCAA bid by winning the ACC tourney are slim with a 7 man rotation, but are practically non-existent if they have to play 4 days in a row. So winning the next 3 games is a must, but it won't be easy. And Virginia has to lose two, which is possible with games against FSU and UNC coming up. For the Pack, it is one game at a time, with the focus now on Clemson alone.

Last thing. This probably isn't fair, but I am having trouble drinking the CJ Leslie Kool-Aid. Yes, he had a great game offensively last night and has strung together several solid performances lately. Here is what is bothering me:

  1.  What took so long? Such a highly touted recruit should have been able to perform at this level sooner than halfway through his sophomore year. If he had done this earlier in the year, maybe the Pack would have pulled off a couple of quality wins earlier in the year.
  2. Maybe it's my imagination, but it seems like when Leslie does well, the rest of the offense suffers. Any fluidity that the offense has disappears when he gets the ball. So, is CJL's success coming at the expense of the team's success. I don't know, but I can't shake the feeling that it does.
  3. Coach Gott had to take him out maybe a minute into the game because he wasn't focused defensively. This comes as no shock to me. His lack of interest in playing defense is notable. That, and his incessant whining about non-calls against him while the opposing team is breaking down the court behind him, just grates at me.

Well, that's my CJL rant of the day. Hopefully, the Pack understands that the season isn't over and there still is a lot to play for. State is a least a year away from contending, but any post-season experience they can get this year can only help. They have lost control of their own destiny so all they can do is take each game as it comes and get the wins any way possible.

Agree with your assessment. He brings it, yet takes it from the team concept. Not always, but a lot of the time. And his complaining instead of getting back on defense? That's breaking rule #1 in my book.

Isn't it uncanny

how some players/teams seem to find their 3-Pt. shooting touch whenever they play state?  I think our players are wearing down due to our depth problems and just can't sustain an all out effort for a full game on both ends of the court.

At this point, the way we are playing, I see an 8-8 conference record at best and no tournament chance whatsoever.  Miami, having lost to Md. last night, could be in "bubble trouble" should we beat them at home; If we do by some miracle, the ACC may have only four teams in.  Just my opinion, of course.

3 pt shooting

Yes, improved in comparison to other games. On the other hand, when KM took his shots, he might have well just have been at the shoot around....he was that open. Course the other guys were too, save Barnes, but it seemed like State was just begging for KM to put em up.

Agree

I want to see the pack and the Hurricanes in the Dance. The tailspin has them on the outside looking in right now. It's embarrassing the ACC can't get any more teams in the Tournament than they do. The leadership simply isn't there anymore in these "flounders" who used to be front runners in the conference. I sincerely hope it changes fast. Like the Heels basketball team is portrayed (and maybe it is true) I only get up for a handful of UNC bball games a year. #bored

Not a surprise

Too late to post too much. Suffice it to say that UNC played so well that State had to be perfect to have a chance. They weren't, but they did play hard and didn't quit. Might be a good idea to give the bubble talk a rest. They need to win the next three and show strong at the ACC. Then, the chips will fall where they may.

I agree

The Heels would appear to be pulling away for a blow out win and state would reel it back in a bit. The Heels kept them at bay pretty much all night and finally pulled away for good in the last three minutes as the pack knew they weren't coming back at that point.

Another ass whooping

KButter used and abused and outplayed Lo Brown again. Double double.

The Black Falcon rose once again.

Henson put up blue collar numbers once again. The guys been bringing his lunch pail all season.

Bullock knocked down some shots

Z was sorta quiet, but wasn't needed in the scoring dept this evening.

The defense smothered the pups again. This team is in fine form heading into March ...

Scott Wood didn't disappear tonight; he never showed up for the game. Been saying it all year: He's too slow for this league and he seemingly carry's defenders on him like an anchor. The guy is a no show in big games.

Poor 'ol Howell. I don't know he is capable of doing this much longer.

CJL had a great game; your one lone bright spot. He's starting to pick his game up.

Lo Brown had the points (18) but it took twenty-two shots to get them. That's not good. Sub par game dishing the pill.

I believe state had more offensive rebounds than UNC, so you have that going for ya, guys.

I'm gonna go find me some old school Tom Petty and listen to Free Falling'

14-2

3-0

6-0

What a night I predicted

What a night

I predicted that UNC was due for a big shooting night and they didn't disappoint us.

State decided to run with the Heels and just couldn't match up from a talent standpoint

Henson's best game of the season IMO. He was aggressive, attacked the basket and defended well.

CJ had the best game, that I have seen, against the Heels ever

KMar, ruled....the court. Spectacular game.

Bullock not shot the ball like he is supposed to, he played excellently in all phases of the game

Barnes...nothing needs to be said. There is no stopping him when he is on.

I thought State actually played really well. Their attitude was great and they hustled. They just couldn't match the Heels.

Great win..I was expecting it to be closer

Yea

I figured state would come out on an emotional uptick after the clown circus this past weekend, but it was not to be. state simply fields a team that has the measurables of a MAC team and that simply isn't gonna cut it against a superior UNC team.

fixed your typo

*ACC

Nah

No, MAC was correct.

Does mean it can't change for the better.

fixed your typos (again)

*yes *incorrect

(some advice: be logical and you'll get more respect when you actually do bring a good point... this is not one of your good points)

g-alligator aka red pussy!

gets his ass kicked again by open mikeee.go duke!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lol

When are you gonna learn that I do not play the PC correct game ? state has zero height and virtually has no inside game. They rely on a PG and some timely shooting from the outside. Anything they get from down low is icing on the cake as they can't bring it against good competition.

Yes, but

Their "starting 5 is as good as anybody in the country"....just ask Willncsu.

Ask willncsu ?

Ask any nc state fan and they'll tell ya the same thing. It's the Gospel on the Adam and Joe Show (nc state wolf pack radio network) from 3-7p that state has one of the best starting five's.

Ok kids

you sufficiently trolled that now I feel like I must lay this to rest.

Fact:  the typical team in the MAC - or even the best team (Akron?) does not  compare to the 4th or 5th best team in the ACC.

UNCCH has the best lineup in the country, you would be more successful talking about that than how State's compares to Zeke Marshall, Nikola Cvetinovic, Nick Harney, Quincy Diggs, and Alex Abreu.  (pretty cool names though!)

Reading comprehension issues (again)

I used the term "measurables" when I equated the wuffies to a MAC team. Nothing else.

It really pains me

to agree with you re Scott Wood, because I have always liked him.  I'm not sure about the "slowness" comment, lack of "quickness" may be a better term; semantics, I suppose.  I also agree that he is not a "big game" player.  At any rate, he hasn't had a good game since playing badly in the Virginia loss; don't know what's going on with him; he seems a little tight out there.

Scott

Don't give up on Scott quite yet. Actually, he had his best game against Wake after the Virginia game. It has been the last 4 (especially Duke) that he has struggled shooting. There is no doubt he is suffering a crisis of confidence with his shot. That said, he does a lot of other things to help the team. He has good fundamentals and his other contributions are overlooked because of his reputation as a shooter.

I think his main problem (which I think is shared by his teammates) is the pressure that comes with being near the top of the conference and battling for a spot in the NCAA tourney. Scott and his teammates haven't experienced that kind of pressure at this level and the transition has not been smooth. I do believe the coaching staff understands this and eventually the team will overcome this hurdle. Whether it happens this year is anyone's guess, but I have no doubt it will happen.

Scott may continue to have trouble with athletic defenders, but that doesn't mean he is not contributing. And if the opposition has to devote a defender to him, that opens it up for everyone else. Still, his work ethic is good and I would not be surprised to see a breakout performance soon.. Maybe as early as Saturday at Clemson.

Deciding factor

3 pt shooting.  Otherwise, State would have been right there to steal a win.  Good effort though.

true

Give the Feet credit, they hit their shots - that was the difference.  UNC 51% and 52% from the field and 3 pt, respectively.  Meanwhile, State: 41%, 23%.  It was obvious the game plan for State was to make them, and specifically Marshall, win the game from 3 pt. land.  Marshall played best game of his career.  UNC's game plan (as well as everyone's in ACC) was to shut down Wood and our 3 pt shooting and give Calvin long range jumpers.  Calvin responded but Lorenzo (1-6 from 3s) and CJ didnt pick up their slack like Marshall did for the baby blues.

All in all, improvement over the game in CH.  I'm continually impressed with Gottfried's improvement with this team.  Would be interesting if these two teams met in ACCT.

Yes

Had UNC missed their 3 pt shots, the wuffies would have won by 12 pts.

You are all over it as usual, Max ! (rolls eyes)

???

How is it that your team wins, and you still have a stick up your butt?!

UNC shot better than State, and that's why they won.  I congratulate them on having such a great offensive night.  I'm not sure why you find that so offensive.  UNC was averaging four 3-pointers a game and they hit ten last night.  The rest of the game was pretty even...just look at the stats.

mad-sax!!

are u going to take it from g-alligator, he has taken u to the wood shed again!!!go bluedevils!!!!

Welp

At least Googs and Corchiani got to watch the entire game.

I'm sure

I'm sure they enjoyed it.
