Heels earn title on Nogueira's goals

Bookmark and Share

With 2:06 left in the match, Casey Nogueira scores the game-winning goal, slanting from center to the left wing and firing across right into the right corner of the goal, hitting the cross-bar on the way in.

It's Nogueira's second goal of the game, fourth of the tournament and 25th of the year.

UNC wins its second national championship in three years, handing the Irish their first and only loss of the season.

UNC's Casey Nogueira ties the game on a free kick in the 52nd minute. She put the ball to the left of goalie Kelsey Lysander.

Tar Heels forward Jessica McDonald, flanked by four defenders, was fouled, setting up Nogueira's opportunity.

Irish forward Kerri Hanks scored 17 seconds into the contest, which ties a school record for quickest goal and Notre Dame leads 1-0 in their bid for a national championship.

Hanks was fed the ball by midfielder Courtney Rosen.

UPDATE: At halftime, the scorekeepers said the goal was scored in 16 seconds, making it the quickest goal in school history.

19 National Championships in 27 years is amazing. Greatest dynasty in ANY collegiate sport - men or women.
"This is a women's soccer school. We're just trying to keep up with them." - Dean Smith.

19th UNC Women Soccer NCAA title

The title to this article on the front page said 19th UNC title.
It is actually the UNC Women Soccer's 19th NCAA title.
They have 20 title overall.
And UNC has almost 40 NCAA (team) titles in ALL sports overall.

Beating up on ND

Congrats, Lady Heels. You helped continue your winning legacy and the Tar Heels domination of Notre Dame this year. Can one out-of-conference school play another in as many sports as the UNC has played ND and get beaten like ND does?

Let's see...
1) Football - check
2) Basketball - check
3) Women's Soccer - check

Notre Dame fans everywhere are saying it:

"Irish I were a Tar Heel!"
