CHAPEL HILL – North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell goes after her 600th career victory at the school when Clemson visits Carmichael Arena on Thursday.

In her 26th season at UNC, Hatchell would join only two other ACC women's basketball coaches with 600 conference wins: former N.C. State coach Kay Yow and former Virginia coach Debbie Ryan.

"Been here a long time," said Hatchell, whose career record over 37 seasons is 871-306.

Hatchell, who is in the Women's Hall of Fame, coached her first UNC team in 1974. The Tar Heels won a national title in 1994.

Still, Hatchell said there were some hard times in between. Her team finished 8-16 in 1976-77.

"Those first three or four years, I'm not sure that this 600 would have ever happened," she said. "We struggled. ... For three years, we were bottom in the league."

She said things slowly turned around.

"I was really questioning if something like this would happen," she said. "Once we got rolling, we went to national championship. ... I've had a lot of great players."
