Hansbrough sets ACC record

Bookmark and Share

GREENSBORO — The ACC has a new career scoring leader.

North Carolina forward Tyler Hansbrough reached 2,770 points on the first of two free throws with 15 minutes, 43 seconds remaining Thursday afternoon in the first half of a first-round NCAA Tournament game against Radford at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Radford forward Phillip Martin committed the foul that sent Hansbrough to the free throw line. After a timeout, Hansbrough stepped to the line at 3:12 p.m. and hit two free throws.

The crowd, realizing the record had been broken, gave Hansbrough a short standing ovation.

Hansbrough, a 6-foot-9 senior from Poplar Bluff, Mo., entered the game with 2,767 points, two short of the ACC record set by Duke guard J.J. Redick from 2002-06.

Even North Carolina’s rivals have been impressed with Hansbrough’s accomplishments.

“Tyler has been one of the great players in the history of our
conference,” Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said Wednesday. “The fact that in this day and age for him to be here forfour years is, I think, really a big compliment to their program and their university that he has stayed, and  he's conducted himself in such a great way on and off the court.”

Being the most prolific scorer from the foul line in NCAA history has helped Hansbrough set the conference scoring record. Hansbrough holds the NCAA record for free throws made, as he had 941 in 1,188 attempts entering the game.

Hansbrough tied the record on a bank shot from the right block with 16:29 remaining in the first half. He missed his first two field goal attempts, a short jumper from the left baseline and a heavily contested shot from the middle of the lane.

Top-seeded North Carolina led No. 16 seed Radford 15-11 early in an unexpectedly competitive game.

Suck on that Dook Fans!

You can have you tournament title, we have ol no. 50 and the ACC title the last 4 out of 5 years.

Congratulations, Hansbrough...

What an achievement! Again, congratulations.

He done what is

expected in a four player with much success at UNC in four years. Setting new records in today's play is a precedent on things. For UNC win another title would help with things also especially for the fans. Just continue the process by winning games.

Hummmel

from crappy Purdue goes to the line 12 times a game. what do yuo sh*tty, no good, whining, jealous ncsu fans think of that??

I triple dog dare Sid to go out and successfully recruit (and keep) a kid of Tylers stature at ncsu. you're on the clock ...

If he shot all the free

If he shot all the free throws to which he was entitled, he'd have 4,000 points.

Check the rules

You don't get to shoot free throws after you foul out... which would take "Over the Back" Hansblah about seven or eight trips downcourt, max, if they actually called him for throwing his body into helpless defenders like a spastic goon.

And you probably believe

And you probably believe the shooter on the grassy knoll existed too.  Conspiracy theory is not your forte.

Bitter

Your a bitter little man.  Tyler is the greatest ACC player of all time.  Live with it.

Whinning jealousy is such an

Whinning jealousy is such an ugly thing. Congrats Tyler !

Whinning?

Spellcheck, genius.

Reality check,

Reality check, Reality_Man.  When you can't change the facts, change the focus.

How appropriate...

That he would break it by shooting free throws. I wasn't watching, but it would be really appropriate if he was awarded the free throws after going over an opponent's back, who was then called for the foul.

When they hang Hansblah's jersey in the Dean Dome, they ought to hang three striped jerseys right beside it.

Free Throws

I remember Giglio said in the live chat that he expected Hansborough to break the record at the free throw line, and I thought "He's only 3 points away and you think he'll do it at the free throw line? He can't make 2 baskets before being fouled??" Well I guess not!
