Useful guards are dropping left and right in the ACC. Georgia Tech's D'Andre Bell is out for the season with a rare congenital condition and Virginia might be without the services of guard Calvin Baker.
Baker, UVa's second-leading returning scorer, might require surgery for his injured left foot, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch. Baker averaged 8.6 points and 2.4 assists last season and was expected to start this season and handle the point guard position.
Baker could miss most or all of the season, leaving UVa with redshirt freshman Sammy Zeglinski and freshman wing Sylven Landesberg to run the point.
UNC wing Marcus Ginyard, who had surgery for a stress fracture in his left foot, will be also out until December.
That's not to mention Wake Forest point guard Ish Smith, who underwent surgery in September to insert a pin in his left foot. Smith is expected to be ready for the start of the season, which by the way, tips off in 17 days.
