N.C. State coach Mark Gottfried had avoided adding commentary to the incident involving two former Wolfpack players and official Karl Hess from Saturday's game until a late Monday night appearance at a student rally on campus.
At the "Ram Roast," aptly near the Freedom of Expression tunnel, Gottfried offered his unfiltered comments about Hess and his decision to eject Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta in the second half of Saturday's game. A student taped the impromptu question-and-answer session and put it first on Facebook and then the video found its way to YouTube.
Gottfried's comments from the video:
"I think it was weak. It was bad and I thought the official was completely out of line 100 percent. I'm disappointed, quite frankly, in the ACC, because not only did he throw out two of N.C. State's greats, he threw out two of the ACC's greats, and the league is supporting an official rather than supporting former great players.
The former great players, in my opinion, were embarrassed and wronged when they shouldn't have been. I don't think you can have rabbit ears like that if you're a referee and start throwing people out. I was disappointed in the whole thing. So they gave a reprimand tonight to the official, but it was pretty weak in my opinion."
The ACC reprimanded Hess on Monday night for his failure to follow the proper protocol in ejecting fans. Hess also wrote in an email to the ACC, which the conference provided for N.C. State, that Corchiani and Gugliotta were ejected for "excessive demonstration on several calls as they came right up to the scorer’s table."
Corchiani and Gugliotta, who both have their jerseys honored at the RBC Center, will be honored, with the 1988-89 N.C. State team, before tonight's game against the Tar Heels. The '89 team won the regular-season ACC title, the last conference championship by the program.

Did you really expect
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 20:31 — coastalconnectionDid you really expect anything more from uncJohnny? C'mon, really! Lets see, played football at unc, AD at unc, and now ACC commissioner. Go figure. Truth be known, uncJohnny probably has a bonus check in the mail to Hess. Wake up all other ACC members, pass a resolution that no one previously affiliated with a member school can be ACC commissioner. And, make it retro-active and lets send uncJohnny back to unc. I'm sure they can find something for him to do. One task he can do is to delivery ButchyBoy his payoff check every month and they can recall the good old days before unc got caught cheating in football. Darn it, if they just had not gotten caught and the meany NCAA told unc they did a no-no. But uncJohnny came to the rescue and went to Indianopolis to plead their case. uncJohnny said: Please, Please, Please don't do anything to us, opps I mean't unc. Do you think uncJohnny would have been in Indianopolis to plead for State, Duke, Wake Forest, Maryland, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Georgia Tech, or any other ACC school? Not NO, but hell NO!

From the above article (2008):
Hess said he has a naturally thick skin, so he isn't bothered by verbal insults from the stands. He believes fans paid to see a game and can yell what they want, as long as they stay in their seats.
"You're a fan and you're entitled to your opinion," he said. "You have to be able to deal with that when you put that black and white shirt on and become an official. If not, you need to go home."
Well, I guess it's time for Karl Hess to go the f*ck home!

KING KARL HESS
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 17:44 — SuperBWith Tar Heel John Swofford as his boss, I wonder if Hess would have thrown out two Tar Heel greats? (You know the anwswer to that questions.) Having refereed for 25 years, among the things a good ref cannot have are "rabbit ears." Hess is not a good referee, just old.
Seriously UNC Fans?
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 14:31 — willncsuYour going to side with Hess on this? Really??? One of the most universally despised refs in the history of the ACC and UNC fans take his side. Unbelievable. The fact that most ACC fans knew his name before this incident tells you all you need to know about him.
hess!
Thu, 02/23/2012 - 17:13 — bluecat69bluecat69i personally think karl hess is one of the best refs ever, ok go bluedevils!!!!!!!!!
Why are you letting goheels1984
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:36 — SFPNCNativeGet the best of you? He is NOT a good representative of most UNC fans, who are just as disgusted at Hess's actions as basketball fans across the ACC and the nation. Kicking the two out was a kneejerk powerplay by Hess, and that's being as kind as one can say on this board. And that's coming from a loyal Tar Heel fan.
Apathy
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:00 — SurferHonestly, I don't really care one way or another. To me, both Hess and Googs/Flameboy were in the wrong. Hess for failure to follow protocal and Googs/Flameboy for excessive demosnstration at the scorers' table.
Sure the actual event was entertaining (jaw dropping.... what the heck just happened?) and all. But in the grande scheme of things, what's the big deal? That they were former players? I guess so, cause if it would have been, "Joe Fan", then this story would be long over by now.
TIME FOR FACTS; NOT MYTHS
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 17:26 — ViperRetApathy,
Obviously you were NOT among the fans at the RBC on Saturday. I was. I did NOT have a front row seat, but I was standing in an area where an "official" who was seated at the scorer's table DIRECTLY in front of Chris and Googs. His report and comments on the incident are also consistent with several of the fans that were seated around them. They did NOT jump up and run over the scorer's table. They were 2 - 3 feet BEHIND (an aisle) the table. When they stood up, they did NOT jump forward. I can show you pictures of fans (Cameron, et. al.) where the students are extending their arms in unison and almost touching the players.
Ref. Hess, from the local accounts, was irritatted at a student who made a comment about him watching the game and not the dance team. The RBC Management did NOT eject the student when Ref. Hess asked for that. They (reportedly) said, how can we single out one student and perhaps suggested that he need to concentrate on the game and be a bit more thick skinned. THIS irritated Ref. Hess. Then, to retaliate and show his "power" (ala Roy's actions) and go directly to RPD and bypass RBC Management was unprecedented.
Perhaps you will recall that the ACC suspended an offical crew for three games for "missing" a substitution occurrence. NOW, when an ACC Offical "loses his composure", make statements that are not supported by video and eye witness accounts, he is only mildly repimanded.
The FUNNY thing is that the sports reporters (ESPN and otherwise) are calling him out and having a field day embarrassing the ACC.
There will be MORE exposure of tonights ceremony of Googs and Chris than you will ever believe. Win, lose or otherwise, NCSU has come out on the HIGH side of this and the ACC Comissioner's staff looks weak and prejudiced.
I WOULD point out that they fined an FSU coach ($20 - $25K) for "altering" his lineup to rest his starters in the ACC Tournament so they would have a better shot in the upcoming NCAA matches. I DO NOT recall reading about any ACC Sanctions, Fines, or otherwise regarding a certain situation a few miles over in Orange County.
SO, please be sure of your facts and NOT what you read on some message board. BTW, I read over 7 pages on a BLUE page and about 85% of the UNC fans were on NCSU's side.
Did I mention that Ref. Hess also "T"ed up Coach Gottfriend for "taking off his coat" in a threatening manner and Calvin Leslie for grimmacing in a "What the....?) face.
So much for Ref. Hess' professionalism and credibility!
Facts
Wed, 02/22/2012 - 16:39 — SurferObviously your definition (and everybody else's for that matter?) of "excessive demonsration" is not the same as Hess's.

The big deal here is that
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:29 — SpacewolfThe big deal here is that two ACC legends have been smeared by the ACC. To you, Googs and Corch (aka 'Flameboy') were in the wrong along with Hess. Every account I've read of the situation, including at least one from a presumably impartial non-NCSU source, says that Googs and Corch did nothing warranting ejection. Come on, ACC, tell us exactly what they did. If you don't, people will imagine the worst. What's that? It'll embarrass them? They've already been embarrassed! They got thrown out of an arena where their jerseys hang! I'd wager a fair sum that the only people to be embarrassed if the full details of the incident were revealed would be Karl Hess and the powers that be in the ACC offices who backed him up.
Karl Hess hates Italian-Americans.
Let me tell ya
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 23:10 — gvillegatrCoOch and Gooch (love that term, GoHeels84) are not excited to see their jersey hanging in the Hockey Arena. I've told you once. If I need to tell ya a third time, I will.
Um...
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 14:38 — nchurricanesKinda hypocritcal for a State fan to get mad at UNC fans for taking Hess's side. 99.9% of State fans are ABCers -- you know what it means, we ALL know what it means, even NON State/Duke/Carolina fans. State fans would be REVELING in this had Hess thrown out Jordan and Worthy from a UNC game.
Fair point
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 15:37 — willncsuAnd it would be a close call since I have despised Hess for years, way before this. My hatred for Hess is almost as great as it is towards UNC. Refs should never eject fans for saying anything in my opinion.
I, for one, really don't
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 14:48 — SpacewolfI, for one, really don't care what UNC, Duke, Boston College, or fans of any other ACC team think of this situation. It's a matter between NC State and the ACC. I am pretty sure however, that if Jordan and Worthy were tossed from the Dean Dome without adequate explanation, UNC fans would be justifiably angry about it.
Karl Hess hates Italian-Americans.
Not exactly my point
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 14:56 — nchurricanesI speak not to whether State fans should be righteously indignant. I, personally, feel they should -- and have so felt since watching the debacle of a "game" they engaged in on Saturday afternoon.
My sole point is that for State fans to get mad, or be surprised even, when UNC fans take the side of someone who has acquired State fans' ire is more than slightly hypocritical.
Especially from a fan base that makes no bones about being ABCers.
Debbie Yow should reprimand
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 13:49 — dan2Debbie Yow should reprimand Gott for this.

How's that for a reprimand?

Tue, 02/21/2012 - 12:17 — SpacewolfIt took John Swofford nearly three days to 'reprimand' Karl Hess. I'm guessing it'll take no more than a couple of hours to let Coach Gott know he's suspended for tonight's game.

Butch Davis supports Karl Hess
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 13:51 — hmi100APA - Tampa
According to the APA, Butch Davis has now weighed in on the Karl Hess controversy: "I am still an employee of UNC, and still consider myself a Tarheel; however, we must rally around our NCAA officials when they are falsely accused of impropriety. Dr. Hess was within his right as an official to impose his will on an unruly fan base and should not be reprimanded by the ACC, NCAA or any other governing body. Our officials have a very hard job in this fast-paced sport that allows fans to sit within earshot of the officials. I have personally been counseled by Dr. Hess, a noted Virginia psychologist, and believe me, he knows aberrant behavior when he sees or hears it. I have full confidence in the NCAA to investigate this matter and absolve Dr. Hess of any wrongdoing, just as they will in my own ongoing investigation. I must get back to the golf course. Thank you for allowing me to set the record straight, once again."

Forgive the copy/paste
Tue, 02/21/2012 - 14:33 — SpacewolfCopied/pasted from another post, since ACCNow doesn't allow links in their posts (probably a good thing: otherwise, I'd link to my new website whydoeskarlhesshateitalianamericans.org):
We've heard from Corch and Googs. We've gotten corroborating statements from people who were around them. None of what has been presented shows that ejection of these two was warranted.
So we're all left to guess what reason Karl Hess had for ejecting them. Neither he or the ACC has offered a valid explanation for why two ACC legends were tossed out of an arena in which their jerseys hang in honor. Many will speculate that they said something profane, vulgar, or threatening. Corch's and Goog's very character has been unfairly impugned and the ACC will do nothing to confirm or refute that they did anything wrong. Karl Hess's judgement in deciding to eject them was never in question though. The ACC fully supports his position that they deserved to be ejected. They maintain that he just didn't follow the proper procedures in doing so.
Well, with the lack of explanation provided by the ACC, I'm left to come to my own conclusion. I conclude that Karl Hess is bigotted toward Italian-Americans and that John Swofford is either too mortified by this bigotry to air it out or shares that bigotry as well. Karl saw an opportunity to publicly embarrass two high-profile Italian-Americans and gleefully took advantage of it. This ethnic hatred is shameful, Karl, absolutely shameful. You should be ashamed as well, John.
What's that? There's no evidence that Karl Hess hates Italian-Americans? There's just as much evidence of that as there is that Chris and Tom did something bad enough to get kicked out of a basketball game.
Karl Hess hates Italian-Americans.
on target
Wed, 02/22/2012 - 00:23 — gevaliaabsolutely on target! If they were ejected for cause lets hear the cause, and the supporting evidence. All valid reports for people in the area have been that there was no cause, they might as well have been in the front pews at church. And this bunk about them charging the scorer's desk? look at the tapes of the game, nothing, by standing they were within 5 or so feet of the desk. Not one word from the official scorer about being threatened.
The bottom line...... A whitewash by the ACC in old army language CYOA (cover your own A$$).
p.s. I hear Hess kicks homeless puppies. (I have the same proof the ACC has).
OK with me...
