Gonzaga: A brief basketball history

Bookmark and Share

In honor of Gonzaga, UNC's third-round opponent on Friday night (9:57 tip) in the South Regional in Memphis. A brief history of the Bulldogs, or Zags, as they're are better known:

June 1984: The Utah Jazz make senior guard John Stockton the 16th overall in the NBA Draft.

March 1999: "Zags Fever" is born. The 10th-seeded Bulldogs beat Minnesota (7), Stanford (2) and Florida (6) to reach the Final Eight. UConn (1) ends the run, 67-62 and goes on to win the national title.

March 2000: New coach (Mark Few for Dan Monson, who left for Minnesota), same spot in the Sweet 16. The 10th-seeded Zags beat Louisville (7) and St. John's (2) before bowing to Purdue (6) in the third round.

March 2001: Third straight Sweet 16 after the 12th-seeded Zags beat Virginia (5) and Indiana State (13). Michigan State (1) eliminates them in the third round.

March 2002: Zags get zigged, losing as the sixth-seed to Wyoming (11) in the first round.

March 2003: The eighth-seed, the Zags beat Cincinnati (9) before losing to Arizona (1) in an epic double-overtime game in the second round.

March 2004: All grown up, the Zags get a No. 2 seed and beat Valpo (15) in the first round before getting worked by Nevada (the lucky No. 10 seed), 91-72 in the second round — in Seattle, no less.

March 2005: Another disappointment. As a No. 3 seed, the Zags beat Winthrop (14) before losing to Texas Tech (6), and Bobby Knight, by two points in the second round.

March 2006: The Adam Morrison "Crying Game." Arguably Mark Few's best team returns to the Sweet 16 for the first time since '01, but UCLA erases a nine-point deficit in the final 3 minutes to leave Morrison weeping on the floor.

November 2006: Gonzaga beats UNC 82-74 in the Preseason NIT in New York, handing UNC's current junior class of Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Deon Thompson, their first college loss.

March 2007: The No. 10 seed turns unlucky. The Zags lose to Indiana (7) in the first round.

March 2008: Another first-round exit, this one in Raleigh as the No. 7 seed after Davidson's Stephen Curry torches the Zags for 40 points.

March 2009: The fourth-seeded Zags handle Akron (13) and then beat Western Kentucky (12) in the final seconds to move into the Sweet 16 for the fifth time in 11 years.

Gonzaga

I'm going to Memphis to catch the Heels in action.

I have followed college basketball for over 50 years, and recall a Gonzaga player in the late 1950s who wore a 21 shoe size. How the time flies!

big feet

USF another West Coast Jesuit school was known in the 1950’a for Bill
Russell and his first undefeated NCAA champeen in 1956 but the big feet belonged
to Bob Lanier of St. Bonaventure. Lanier was actually preceded into the Hall of
Fame by a bronzed pair of his shoes, the biggest the NBA had ever seen. "A
lot of people," he noted in HOOP magazine, "can put both feet into
one of my shoes."

I'm looking for an excited and capable opponent...

for UNC Friday night. I'm also looking for a confident and more talented UNC team to win a big game in a big way. I was just impressed with UNC's guard play Sat. I think if it maintains that level it's a National Championship.
